Expedition skill

Expedition skills (Japanese: 探索スキル Expedition Skill) are a type of skill introduced in version 2.24.0 of Pokémon Masters EX. They are used exclusively on Trainer Lodge expeditions, and they determine how a sync pair will affect the discovery level of an expedition team they are added to.

Mechanics

All expedition skills increase the discovery level of at least one type of expedition reward:Fiery Crystals,Soothing Crystals,Wistful Crystals, orRare Cache. The type of crystal that a sync pair's expedition skill increases, if any, is determined by the sync pair's role:

• A Strike or Sprint sync pair increases the discovery level of Fiery Crystals.
• A Tech or Field sync pair increases the discovery level of Soothing Crystals.
• A Support sync pair increases the discovery level of Wistful Crystals.

If a sync pair raises the discovery level of multiple crystal types, one of those crystal types will be the type that corresponds to their role; the other crystal type appears to be random.

Some expedition skills also decrease the discovery level of at least one type of expedition reward. The discovery level lowered appears to be random, but it will never match the type that corresponds to the sync pair's role. If an expedition skill lowers the discovery level of two types of crystals, they will be the two types of crystals that do not correspond to the sync pair's role. In addition, there is currently no expedition skill that can decrease the discovery level ofRare Cache.

How an expedition skill affects discovery level is determined by the sync pair's theme skills; specifically, their Trainer group theme skill:

• Sync pairs with the Main Character theme skill increase the discovery level of their corresponding crystal by 2.
• Sync pairs with the Elite Four, Champion, or Trial Giver theme skill increase the discovery level of their corresponding crystal by 3 and decrease the discovery level of one of the other crystal types by 1.
• Sync pairs with the Gym Leader theme skill increase the discovery level of their corresponding crystal by 1 and one of the other crystal types by 1.
• Sync pairs with the Rival, Villain, or Battle Facility Foe theme skill increase the discovery level ofRare Cache by 2 and either decrease the discovery level of a crystal type other than their corresponding crystal by 2 or decrease the discovery level of both crystal types other than their corresponding crystal by 1.
• Sync pairs with no Trainer group theme skill increase the discovery level of their corresponding crystal by 2.

Sync pairs with multiple Trainer group theme skills follow the rules of whichever Trainer group is listed first among their theme skills. For example, Leon & Charizard has both the Battle Facility Foe and Champion theme skills, but Champion comes before Battle Facility Foe in their theme skill list. So, they increase the discovery level ofFiery Crystals rather thanRare Cache.

There are a few sync pairs that do not follow these rules:

• The Masked Royal & Incineroar, Sygna Suit Cynthia (Renegade), and Leon (Alt.) & Dragapult have the expedition skill Rare ↑ 3Fiery ↓ 2Wistful ↓ 2.
• Sygna Suit Lusamine & Necrozma, Sygna Suit Giovanni & Nidoking, and Rose & Copperajah have the expedition skillRare ↑ 3Soothing ↓ 2Wistful ↓ 2.
• Hala & Crabominable, despite having the Trial Giver theme skill, has the expedition skillFiery ↑ 1Wistful ↑ 1.
• Sygna Suit Cyrus & Darkrai and Colress & Klinklang, despite having the Villain theme skill, have the expedition skillSoothing ↑ 2.
• Leon (Holiday 2021) & Calyrex, despite having the Battle Facility Foe theme skill, has the expedition skillFiery ↑ 2.

• Allister & Gengar used to have the expedition skillFiery ↑ 3Soothing ↓ 1, despite being a Tech sync pair with the Gym Leader theme skill. This was fixed in version 2.27.0, when his expedition skill was changed toFiery ↑ 1Soothing ↑ 1.
• Scottie and Bettie do not have any expedition skills, and cannot be sent on expeditions at all.

In addition, several sync pairs do not follow these rules because they have a variable expedition skill instead.

Variable skills

Some expedition skills have effects that vary depending on what sync pairs are on the current expedition team. These are distinguished from other expedition skills by a purple ribbon behind the effect on the "Edit Expedition Team" screen. Sync pairs in the sync pair list will be displayed with the range of values their expedition skill can have, while sync pairs on the expedition team will be displayed with their current effect on the discovery level. If the conditions for their skill affecting discovery level are not met by the current expedition team, the purple ribbon and value both disappear.

There are two kinds of variable expedition skills:

• Those that affect discovery level by a set amount, only if 3 sync pairs from the specified region are on the team.
• Those that increase discovery level by the number of sync pairs from a certain region that are on the team.

Excluding the skills that affect Rare Cache discovery level, all variable expedition skills affect only the type of crystal corresponding to the sync pair's role. Only one sync pair from each region has each kind of variable expedition skill, for a total of sixteen different variable expedition skills. These skills - and the sync pairs who have them - are listed in the table below:
