Magearna was leaked in the March issue of CoroCoro released on February 10, 2016, and it was officially revealed on February 14, 2016, making it the first Generation VII Pokémon to be revealed to the public.
Biology
Concept art of Magearna, detailing its intricate design
Magearna is a metallic, bipedal, and artificial Pokémon. Its body is primarily silver, made up of round shapes, and can be segmented into three sections: a medium-sized head, a small torso, and a large lower body that resembles a ball gown. Its head has the shape of a horizontal teardrop, with the round bottom acting as its face, but its nape is perfectly straight instead of curved, as if cut off, making the back of its head look similar to a short ponytail. It has oval eyes, which are light pink with light red sclerae, have pupils in the shape of white crosses, and are outlined by a golden wiring that prongs upward into two eyelashes. It has a small, dot-like blue nose and pink mouth; two large, semicircular, rabbit-like ears with golden rims coming from a small nub on top of its head; and a gear with seven teeth around its head. On its forehead, thin, gray lines form the pattern of an eye; three lines run across the back of its head. Its torso is made of a spherical, silver frame. Attached to either side of its torso, there is a spherical shoulder which leads a thin upper arm and a claw-shaped lower arm with defined tips. Its lower body is mostly covered by the ball gown-like sphere, leaving only the tips of its thin legs with discs around the calfs exposed. This sphere is blunt and white at the top, where it connects to Magearna's torso, and is divided between a silver upper half and a white lower half by a bold, black stripe. The stripe does not meet at the front of the ball gown, instead connecting to halves of a broken gold ring with a pentagonal shield shape in the center; on the opposite side, there is a gold ring as well, but it is intact, thicker, and has a solid black center. The silver upper half has two rectangle shapes, defined by a thin, gray line, and each contain two golden, wavy patterns. The white lower half is made of four, retractable metal plates similar to the ruffles of a dress.
Magearna was created roughly 500 years ago by a scientist. Its body is actually nothing more than a vessel to its real self: the Soul-Heart held inside its chest. It consists of a light blue orb with four golden pins spread evenly around its vertical diameter and a heart split between blue and pink surrounded by golden speartips at the front. When attached to Magearna, the Soul-Heart is visible through the frame on its torso. It is described as an artificial soul and heart, created by collecting the life energy of other Pokémon.[1] As seen in Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, the Soul-Heart can be used as a power source, and if it is removed from Magearna's body, it is left unable to move but still conscious. When its vessel is not being powered by the Soul-Heart, Magearna's eyes turn off, becoming a dull gray. Magearna also has a number of other hidden features: it can open up the tip of its arms to reveal a cannon, a single flower or a bouquet of five pink flowers; additionally, the aforementioned movie depicts it as being able to water flowers with its arm and sing a calming lullaby. Magearna is a great caretaker, as it can synchronize its consciousness with people and Pokémon in order to understand their feelings; despite this, however, it is unable to speak itself. When dormant or sad, it can also curl up into a sphere, taking on the appearance of a Poké Ball, which it does by retracting its head, torso, arms, and legs into its ball gown. In order to reawaken, the power of Magearna's internal mechanisms must be restored, which can be achieved by a Key Stone sending energy to the Magearnite it holds.

Forms
Magearna has an alternate form called Original Color. Both forms can Mega Evolve into Mega Magearna.

Original Color
Original Color
Original Color Magearna has the same color scheme it had 500 years ago, at the time it was created. It has much vivid colors, with its head, torso frame, arms, and legs being painted gold. The center of the golden ring at the front has turned black, while the upper part of its ball gown was painted red, as well as its ears, more closely resembling a standard Poké Ball.
Original Color Magearna's beautiful, vivid decoration was the color it had when it was first created 500 years ago. Magearna was created by a scientist as a gift to royalty, specifically to a king's daughter. In Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, the scientist who created Magearna was a man named Nikola, and the king's daughter who received it was an unnamed princess of the Azoth Kingdom. The magnificent, luxurious decoration of Original Color Magearna is said to have pleased the king's daughter, who admired its beauty. Magearna's current color scheme is a result of the original colors fading away over the centuries, leaving only the silver of its metallic body.
Mega Magearna
As a result of Mega Evolution, Mega Magearna restores the colors it originally had. Its eyes became slightly tilted, are pink with even larger white crosses as pupils, and are outlined by red wiring. Its nose and mouth have also turned red. Mega Magearna no longer has a gear headband, left only with black stripe in its place; instead, its ears have moved forward and flipped upside-down, each with a smaller semicircle detaching from the center. A small, silver tiara with three spikes sits in between its ears. Its arms become straighter. The rings on its ball gown and the rectangles above each of them have folded upward, revealing more of Mega Magearna's legs and leading to the rings covering the front and back of its torso. The front ring features a pentagonal shield split between blue and pink, much like the Soul-Heart that now lies behind it. The lower half of its ball gown is much shorter and frillier in appearance, featuring heavy black outlines. Additionally, a pair of floating, four-toothed half-gears constantly orbit around Mega Magearna.
Depending on Magearna's form, there are some slight color variations. Regular Mega Magearna has red rings covering the front and back of its torso, with the front ring being golden at the center, and the color of its lower half of its ball gown and half-gears is dark gray. Original Color Mega Magearna, on the other hand, has rings that remain golden, with the center of the front ring being black, and the colors of the lower half of its ball gown and half-gears are white and silver, respectively.
The Mega Stone that triggers Magearna's Mega Evolution also activates a secret mechanism that was placed on it during its creation, removing its limitations but locking away its feelings in the process. Due to this, Mega Magearna becomes a heartless fighting machine that strives to defeat enemies endlessly. It can launch its floating gears at opponents and combine them into one giant gear around its flower-shaped cannon to unleash powerful beams.

Magearna has a separate form called Original Color Magearna. The two forms are non-interchangeable, and the difference between them is purely aesthetic: Original Color Magearna has its original red and gold color scheme instead of silver.
Magearna made its animated series debut in The Secret Princess!, where a Shiny one was seen inactive at Lillie's home mansion. Prior to his disappearance, Mohn had found and purchased it from an antique store, with the intention of giving it to Lillie to play with once he had managed to repair it. It made further appearances in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, ultimately becoming active again in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.
Magearna debuted in Magearna Moves, where Trevor met it in Lumiose City. It helped him stop the crimes of what seemed to be Essentia, but ultimately turned out to be a robot created by Xerosic.
Shiny Magearna is the only unobtainable Shiny Pokémon that has exclusively appeared in the animated series.
Until Generation VIII, Magearna's Shiny color scheme was identical to the regular one. Pokémon HOME is the first to include data for its updated palette, with Pokémon Sword and Shield's Version 1.2.0 update being the first to include its data in the core series.
Shiny Magearna's debut appearance in the animated series precedes its first appearance in a game, as The Secret Princess! first aired in Japan on April 7, 2019, before the launch of Pokémon HOME on February 12, 2020.
Magearna and Tatsugiri are the only Pokémon whose appearance while Mega-Evolved differs depending on their form.
Magearna may be based on a nursemaid, a young woman that would care for and look after children within the community of a large household, having historically worked in medieval castles. The gear around Magearna's head also resembles a maid's headdress as well as its central body looking similar to the common wear for a maid, such as its arms looking like long, puffed sleeves and the black divide near the end of its "gown" bearing resemblance to the end of an apron. It may also borrow from the idea of a karakuri puppet, but does not resemble one. The rabbit ears and the yellow crescents on its body may reference the moon rabbit legend. Magearna may also be inspired by Mahina, the Hawaiian goddess of the moon, due to her name resembling "machine" or "machina", and Magearna's color and lower body shape. Based on its name and access to Shift Gear, it might be a gear machine system. Its shape while curling up resembles a Poké Ball, which is further accentuated by Original Color Magearna's color scheme, whose Shiny version seems to be based on an Ultra Ball.
Name origin
Magearna may be a combination of machina (Latin for "machine"), mana, and gear.
