Cyrus (Japanese: アカギ Akagi) is the boss of Team Galactic, a man with the aim of destroying and then recreating the entire universe in his image, without emotions, so that there may be no conflict.

In the games

As the boss of Team Galactic, Cyrus is the nihlistic, god-complexed main antagonist of the Sinnoh games, with the ultimate goal of summoning Dialga and Palkia in order to destroy the universe so that he may start it again as its god. Born and raised in Sunyshore City, he was known to be a good, albeit antisocial, student, and so preferred the company of machines over humans and Pokémon. Despite being such a good student, however, he did not live up to his parents' expectations, and so felt rejected. His grandfather, who lives on Route 228 in Pokémon Platinum, regrets not taking him in during his time of need.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl

The player first meets him in Mt. Coronet, but he does not battle, nor give his name. Later on, the two men guarding Lake Valor will mention his name in passing, though Cyrus himself is not identified until he introduces himself after the player defeats a Galactic Grunt and investigates the ruins in Celestic Town.

Upon being defeated at Spear Pillar, Cyrus claims he will have revenge and disappears. His assets and duties are left to Saturn.

Mt. Coronet

According to one theory, Mt. Coronet is where the Sinnoh region began. In a newly created world... A world where only time flowed and space expanded.. There should have been no strife. But what became of that world? Because the human spirit is weak and incomplete, strife has appeared... This world is being ruined by it...I find the state of things to be deplorable...

Celestic Town

There appears to have been an insignificant struggle here. Everyone should step back and view things from a bigger perspective. Yes, a bigger perspective, one that is on a universal scale. My name is Cyrus. I seek the power to create a new world, a world without strife. However that power seems to be unavailable here... We've met before, yes? It was at Mt. Coronet. If you discover any power derived from the legends of Sinnoh, inform me. For that power is what I need to create my new world.

Team Galactic HQ
  • Before battle:

I see. You must be the Trainer I've been hearing about. The foolhardy one that's trying to stand up to Team Galactic. Although I'd hardly expected to see that the Trainer is a mere child. I'd heard that our Commanders had a rough time with you... I know why you're here, I can sense it in you. It's about Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, correct? You want to save them... I no longer have any need for them. I am finished with them. If your heart aches to save them, go right ahead, I couldn't care less. It will save me the trouble of disposing of them.

But I must say... You are a remarkable specimen. Those Pokémon have nothing to do with you, do they not? But still you came to rescue them out of pity? Such pitifully useless emotions... It's illogical and irrational. Pity and compassion are products of the weak and lacking human heart. You were compelled to come here by vacuous sentimentality! I will make you regret paying heed to your heart!

  • After sending out last Pokémon:

My last Pokémon.

  • During battle:

I see... I may lose if this pace continues...

  • When defeated:

Interesting and quite curious.

  • After battle:

I see. You are indeed strong. And the basis of your power is your compassion toward Pokémon. How wasteful... Such emotions are but mere illusions. And, like all illusions, they fade over time until death banishes them forever. That is why I have abandoned all emotions as useless sentimentality. But that doesn't matter. I doubt you will ever understand my position. That said, I recognize that you are strong and courageous to come alone. This is your reward.

The Master Ball is the ultimate Poké Ball. It will unfailingly catch any Pokémon in the wild. But it is not anything that I require. Unlike you Trainers, I do not make Pokémon my friends or partners. Unlike other Team Galactic members, I don't use Pokémon as tools. Instead, I make the power of Pokémon my own. If you wish to save the Pokémon from the lakes, take the warp panel ahead. I am off to Mt. Coronet. That's correct. Mt. Coronet. Where you and I first met. I will ascend the mountain to its peak and put an end to everything... No. I will bring about a new beginning for everything...

Spear Pillar

Now all will end. And everything will begin. With this Red Chain I will pry open the portal to another dimension. I command that you unleash all your power for me... Dialga/Palkia the mythical Pokémon and the master of time/space! This will bring about the destruction of all things. With everything gone, there will be no fighting and no strife. Can you feel time/space distorting? Only I can choose to stop it. This is the mythical Pokémon that created Sinnoh! Dialga/Palkia the ancient deity of time/space! This world cannot be molded into the ultimate world I seek! It's far easier to create an entirely new world than to change this one! A new world in which I am the ruler of all things! I shall become a deity!

Oh! Dialga/Palkia... This is... Fantastic! Beautiful! It's the creating of a new galaxy! My new world! ... Wh-what?!

  • Before battle:

The Red Chain! It crumbled away to nothing?! But why? Why would Mesprit, the Pokémon of Lake Verity, appear by your side? But never mind that! It's all destroyed! My galaxy is gone! I won't allow this... I will capture those three again and craft another Red Chain! But before I even think about that, I'm going to completely crush you!

  • After sending out last Pokémon:

I admit that you have pushed me to this extreme.

  • During battle:

This... this cannot be! It's not possible that I lose!

  • When defeated:

I won't admit this! The power spoken of in mythology... I didn't just make it obey me, I made it my own!

  • After battle:

What is truly ultimate to you? What do you consider perfection? The most important thing... What shines the brightest... Telling you is meaningless. But I will not give up. I will become a deity one day... And I will make the ultimate mine...'

Pokémon Platinum

Cyrus in the opening of Platinum

Cyrus has, in a way, more of a role in Platinum, as he's first met at Lake Verity near the start of the game. He is also met in front of the statue in Eterna City and in Mt. Coronet. Unlike before, he is first battled in the ruins of Celestic Town and again at their base in Veilstone City. After summoning both Dialga and Palkia at Spear Pillar, he is taken by Giratina to the Distortion World. After the player battles Giratina, Cyrus stays in the Distortion World, still vowing to create a world without spirit.

Quotes

Lake Verity

...The flowing time... The expanding space... I will make it all mine one day... Cyrus is my name. Remember it... Until then, sleep while you can, legendary Pokémon of the lake bed....

Allow me to pass. Step aside.

Eterna City

...So, this is Eterna's Pokémon statue... Shaping our world are time and space in an interwining spiral. Revered in Sinnoh are the Pokémon of time and space... Sinnoh's myth... Its truth needs investigation...

...Pardon me. Stand aside.

Team Galactic HQ
  • Speech:

Fellow members of Team Galactic! Hear me! My name, as I appear to you today, is Cyrus. This world of ours is a crude one. In a word, it is incomplete. It has been, and always will be, a struggle to survive in this world. We humans and Pokémon are likewise incomplete. Because we are all so lacking, we fight, we maim... It is ugly. I hate the incompleteness. That we are all incomplete, I hate it with my entire body and being. The world should be complete. The world must change. Then, who will change it? Me, Cyrus. And Team Galactic. Yes, all of you. Together we pored over myths and exposed their secrets. Together we captured legendary Pokémon. And now, Team Galactic has obtained the energy to change the world! The power of dreams is within our grasp! Understand it, fellow members! My long-held dreamworld is on the verge of becoming reality. All those headed to Mt. Coronet, and those who remain here... Though our missions may differ, our hearts beat as one. Let there be glory for Team Galactic!

  • Before battle:

...So you've come. You heard my speech, I take it. Snicker... A big lie, of course. It's true, insofar as my intention is to create a new world. But that world isn't for the likes of Team Galactic. I seek an entirely new world solely for myself. If not, it could never be the complete and perfect world. You've seen my minions of Team Galactic. You yourself must know that they are uniformly useless and incomplete.

I know why you're here. I can sense it in you. It's about Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, correct? You want to save them... I no longer have any need for them. I am finished with them. If your heart aches to save them, go right ahead. I couldn't care less. It will save me the trouble of disposing them.

But, I must say... You are a remarkable specimen. Those Pokémon have nothing to do with you, do they? But still you come to rescue them out of pity? Such pitifully useless emotions... It's illogical and irrational. Pity and compassion are products of the weak and faulty human heart. You were compelled to come here by such vacuous sentimentality! I will make you regret paying heed to your heart!

  • After sending out last Pokémon:

My last Pokémon.

  • During battle:

I see... I may lose if this pace continues...

  • When defeated:

Interesting. And quite curious.

  • After battle:

I see... You are indeed strong. And the basis of your power is your compassion towards Pokémon.

...How wasteful... Such emotions are but mere illusions. And, like all illusions, they fade over time until death banishes them forever. That is why I have abandoned all emotions as useless as sentimentality.

...But that doesn't matter.

Coronet. I will ascend the mountain to its peak where destiny awaits me. It is there that I will create my new world...

Spear Pillar

... ... Everything is ready for the creation of a new world. Now, all will end. And everything will begin. With this, the Red Chain made from the crystals of the three lake Pokémon. And this, the Red Chain I replicated with technological means... With these Red Chains I will pry open the portal to another dimension. I command that you unleash your power for me...

Dialga, the mythical Pokémon, and the master of time! ...And the other. Palkia, the mythical Pokémon, and the master of space and dimensions!

I've waited so long for this moment, Dialga and Palkia. Shaping this world is a double spiral of time and space. Yes, the very things that you have the ability to control! You will do my bidding! I will have your abilities as mine! With the power I wield, I will create an entirely new world! The incomplete and ugly world we have now can disappear. I am resetting everything to zero. Nothing can remain. It is all for making the ultimate world. A world of complete perfection. Nothing so vague and incomplete as spirit can remain.

...I should have expected as much. Uxie, "The Being of Knowledge." Azelf, "The Being of Willpower." And Mesprit, "The Being of Emotion"...

The Pokémon have come to protect Sinnoh? Pathetic and worthless. It takes the three of them, the three lake Pokémon that symbolize spirit, to balance either the Pokémon of time or space. But they can't maintain balance against the two. Not when both Dialga and Palkia are here. Their coming here is in vain. So much meaningless drama. Now, [player]. You've constantly interfered with my plans, but you will be forgiven. After all, there will remain no spirit for all time when I am done. All spirit will disappear. It will be ripped away... From you! From your Pokémon! From those precious to you...! It is time! My dream will be my reality!

What is this pressure I feel...? Something...is enraged?

Interesting. So, there is a Pokémon that can only appear as a shadow.

Regardless, the effort is rash and foolish. I have harnessed the powers of Dialga and Palkia...

I, Cyrus, won't have any more interferererererere...!

Distortion World

... The shadowy Pokémon isn't here. It abandoned me here, then disappeared somewhere farther down... Was it content to merely interfere with my plan...? Incidentally, do you understand the concept of genes?

... If it's true, you've impressed me. Genes can be considered the blueprints of all life-forms. That includes humans and Pokémon alike. Genes are contained in a DNA strand. A DNA strand consists of 2 chains of opposing characteristics in a spiral. If one of the chains were to be broken, the other could replicate it. One or the other cannot exist without its opposite.

Do you understand where I am going with this? This is a bizarre world. Time doesn't flow. Space isn't stable. Only that shadowy Pokémon lives here. This world is the opposite of our world-- our world I wish to change. It is like the two chains composing the strand of DNA. The two worlds must be balancing each other to remain in existence. Without one, the other cannot exist. The shadowy Pokémon must play a role in keeping the worlds in balance. That is why it must have interfered and brought me here. The shadowy Pokémon must have made this bizarre world. That's why trying to change our world disturbed it and made it reveal itself. But that is all irrelevant. What matters is defeating that Pokémon and making this world disappear. I won't allow it to interfere with me again. With it gone, neither world will be able to revert to its original state...

  • Before battle:

Why should I run and hide from the world and have to wait quietly? My aim is to rid our world of the vague and incomplete thing we call spirit. By freeing ourselves of that, our world can be made complete. That is my justice! No one can interfere!

I won't lose! Not to that shadowy Pokémon! Not in any worthless world!

  • After battle:

... Don't think that you can defeat or capture that Pokémon. This bizarre world is none other than that Pokémon itself! Capturing it or defeating it will make this world disappear! Very well! Do what you will! Rather than repairing the world, you're going to destroy it for me! Do it. You inherit my legacy.

  • After defeating or capturing Giratina:

That Pokémon... That shadowy Pokémon was captured/defeated?! Your doing so means that this irrational world will remain in existence! Does that make it impossible for me to create a new world? Even if I made new Red Chains, the new world can't be made! Why?! What compels you to protect the two worlds? Is spirit, a vague and incomplete thing, so important to you?!

Silence! Enough of your blathering! That's how you justify spirit as something worthwhile?! That is merely humans hoping, deluding themselves that they are happy and safe! The emotions broiling inside me... Rage, hatred, frustration... These ugly emotions arise because of my own incomplete spirit! ... Enough. We will never see eye to eye. This, I promise you. I will break the secrets of the world. With that knowledge, I will create my own complete and perfect world. One day, you will awaken to a world of my creation. A world without spirit.

Cyrus in the anime

He made his first appearance in Losing Its Lustrous! and Double Team Turnover!, along with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. It was revealed that he is a rich businessman who has made most of the buildings and libraries throughout Sinnoh. However, Ash and the others do not know that he is also the Team Galactic leader. Using his businessman alter-ego, he visits the Celestic Town Historical Research Center while the remaining members of Team Galactic carry out a plan to steal the Lustrous Orb from the Research Center, after having already stolen the Adamant Orb from its Eterna City police escort.

He discovers from Ash and Dawn that they have seen Azelf and Mesprit when the two tell of their encounters with the mysterious Pokémon at Lake Verity and Lake Valor, which apparently intrigues him

He appeared again in Saving the World From Ruins!. He was seen in Team Galactic's headquarters alongside Saturn and Jupiter as well as Charon. They were coordinating Mars's mission on Iron Island and using a beam launched with the Spear Key to scan energy readings from the Spear Pillar. However, Mars's machine was destroyed when the scan had reached only 60%, presumably ruining their mission. Despite this, Cyrus did not appear to be discouraged.

Cyrus also appeared towards the end of Unlocking the Red Chain of Events!, where he requested J's services in capturing Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf. In The Battle Finale of Legend!, he takes control of Dialga and Palkia, and steps into a portal created by the two legendary Pokémon. The portal was soon destroyed, leaving Cyrus's fate unknown.

He appeared briefly in DP191 in Team Rocket's fantasy with all the other members of Team Galactic.

Cyrus in Pokémon Adventures

Cyrus makes his first appearance in Vs. Stunky as a silhouette walking down Route 207 where he receives an unknown package, he is fully revealed when he signs the receipt and states that he is going to Mt. Coronet. In Vs. Probopass and Magnezone when Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum pass through Mt. Coronet he coldly attacks them with his newly evolved Probopass and Magnezone, trapping them underneath a pile of rubble and leaves while stating that they were disturbing sacred ground.

After Paka and Uji are sent to another dimension by a machine operated by Saturn Cyrus appears and physically reprimands him for using such a device by pinching his arm (an act that is apparently known throughout Team Galactic as other members are seen trying their best to complete a mission in fear of suffering an arm pinch). He asks him if their plan to get money for the completion of their Galactic Bomb is complete, when Saturn states that he hasn't gotten the money, Cyrus continues pinching his arm.

In Vs. Probopass and Magnezone I Cyrus appears at the Celestic ruins where Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum finally meet him in person. At the ruins he battles Cynthia's Garchomp with his Pokémon, using her attacks to blow open a hole in the ruins. In the ruins he finds paintings of the legendary Pokémon Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit while the Sinnoh Pokédex holders and Cynthia’s Grandmother try to escape. Cyrus is confronted by Diamond who had stayed behind when the others attempted to flee the scene, Cyrus is asked by the young boy if he is the leader of Team Galactic but he just ignores him and uses a camera to take pictures of the paintings. When Diamond tells him that he shouldn't be looking at the cave paintings Cyrus coldly sends him flying with a Magnet Bomb from his Pokémon but has his camera is stolen by Diamond's Lax.

Cyrus battles Diamond and Pearl for his stolen camera using his Magnezone's magnets to attract every metal objects, even ones in the ground, to it. Before the camera flies to Magnezone, Pearl's Chahiko swoops down and steals it but Cyrus pins it to the ground with Gravity. Cyrus states that their battle is pointless due to the fact they’re fighting over sacred ground, he tells them that he aims to create a conflict free world and officially introduces himself to the boys. Cyrus, impressed with the boys skills, offers a place in Team Galactic to Diamond and Pearl, but they refuse and Pearl answers his offer by destroying the camera.

Cyrus mulls over Pearl's answer and responds with his own answer, by having a pillar of stone rise up from the ground, trapping the both of them. Cyrus, feeling that he's been there long enough, decides to take his leave but not before praising Diamond's emotions and Pearl's willpower, he states that it would be better if they had knowledge; he then leaves the vicinity with his Air Car.

In Vs. Buizel I after Mesprit, Azelf, and Uxie are successfully captured by the Galactic Commanders Cyrus tells his scientist to begin the construction of the Red Chain. In Vs. Buizel II Cyrus gathers his grunts and commanders in one room and gives a speech, a speech on how he hates the incomplete world he lives in, he states that there are people who will change the world and those people are Cyrus himself and the members of Team Galactic. In Vs. Elekid Cyrus begins the construction of the Red Chain stating that two will needed to be made in order to capture time and space and waits until Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit have rested before extracting more jewels for the second chain.

In Vs. Honchkrow the Red Chain has been successfully created when Cyrus receives a video from the Galactic Commanders who state that intruders have broken through their guard posts surrounding Veilstone and are infiltrating the HQ, Cyrus just tells them to ignore it and that he will meet them at the summit of the Spear Pillar when the Red Chain has been completed. Cyrus is then surprised as the wall behind him is suddenly blown open, the culprit introduces herself as researcher of the Sinnoh region myths, Cynthia, the two immediately begin battling.

Cyrus laughs as his Honchkrow falls down defeated from fighting her Spiritomb and reveals that he knows that Cynthia is no mere researcher, but is in fact the Sinnoh League Champion, surprising her in the process. They continue their battle and one by one their Pokémon fall until only Cynthia is left with her Garchomp and attempts to finish him with a powerful Draco Meteor. Cyrus and his Gyarados are hit by the powerful move but, to Cynthia’s surprise emerge hurt but still conscious. Cyrus states that due to Cynthia's anger it caused her and Garchomp to lose focus, thus causing Garchomp's Draco Meteor weaker than it should have been. Cyrus states that their exciting battle has come to an end and that the second Red Chain should be complete right about now and takes his leave, leaving the Champion alone and too weak to follow him.

Cyrus then goes to check on the progress of the second Red Chain's creation but sees that Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum have managed to free Mesprit, Azelf, and Uxie. He states that capturing the three a second time would be impossible and that he has only one option; use the second artificial Red Chain which is weaker than the real one but still has the same abilities. He then sets off on his Magnezone to the Spear Pillar, furious at what has happened.

He later arrives at the Spear Pillar and is greeted by Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn who are worried about his current condition, Cyrus just walks up the stairs to the Spear Pillar's peak and tells them to prevent anyone from disturbing his ritual. While the Galactic Commanders fend off their intruders, Cyrus begins the ritual and summons the legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia.

As the Commanders battle the Gym leaders Cyrus begins his plan, he orders the two dragons to being fighting each other causing Time and Space itself to distort. Events begin repeating themselves and going into one location leads to another and Cyrus begins tearing up at the thought that his plans have finally come to fruition. His joy quickly goes away as he finds himself surrounded by the Gym Leaders Roark, Gardenia, Maylene, Crasher Wake, Fantina, and Candice who have already defeated the Commanders and begin to attack the Red Chain. He angrily attacks them with his Pokémon but they are unable to stop the Gym Leader’s Pokémon in time and the Red Chain is broken, the sphere energy created by Dialga and Palkia rises up and is shot into the sky and explodes. Despite the Gym Leaders breaking the Red Chain, Dialga and Palkia continue fighting and they question why, Cyrus begins explaining that even with the Red Chain broken, it will not stop them from fighting. As he holds the broken remains of the Red Chain in his hands his anger reaches a boiling point and he furiously attacks the Gym Leaders.

Cyrus first appears in volume 2, watching Mitsumi's contest. He tells Hareta that he is an old friend of Mitsumi's. His next appearance is in Celestic Town at the ruins, where his name and the objectives of Team Galactic are revealed. Hareta later engages him in a battle, Weavile versus Piplup. Names

His Japanese name, Akagi, is a common surname in Japan, which may indicate that, like Giovanni, his name in Japan is merely his last name, leaving his first unknown. "Akagi" means "red castle", "red tree", or "red future", the last of which may reference the many deaths that would have taken place if his scheme had come to fruition. It may also refer to the Red Chain which Cyrus needs to summon the legendary Pokémon, Dialga and/or Palkia, at the Spear Pillar. It could also be in reference to Planet X, also known as the Red Planet, Nibiru, Wormwood, Quetzalcoatl, and many more names. It is an apocalyptic conspiracy, but there are many different theories about what exactly it is. There is also a volcano called Akagi in the real-world Kanto region of Japan.

The majority of Cyrus's localized names refer to the Sun; this fits in with the Commanders' planetary naming scheme, and may be a reference to how Cyrus would figuratively hold the Sun's position as center of his new world. The Korean and Chinese names contain both a reference to red, like the Japanese one, and to the Sun, like the localized Western ones.

Language Name Origin
Japanese アカギ Akagi 赤木 Akagi, Bischofia javanica. Can also mean "red castle", "red tree", or "red future". Also a common last name in Japan.
English, Italian Cyrus From Persian Kuros, meaning Sun.
French Hélio From Helios, the Greek solar deity.
German Zyrus From Persian Kuros, meaning sun.
Spanish Helio From Helios, the Greek solar deity.
Korean 태홍 Taehong Similar to 태양 (太陽) "sun", 홍 may mean 紅, "red" (in Japanese aka)
Chinese (Taiwan) 赤日 Chìrì Means "red sun", 赤 comes from 赤 aka.

Trivia

  • The aka that appears in his Japanese name may refer to the color red, as a counterpart to Cynthia, whose Japanese name refers to shiro, white.
  • In the games, Cyrus's Pokémon are all either of Template:Type2 or Template:Type2, his Honchkrow is both. Also all of Cyrus's Pokémon are dual-typed, and they all have a weakness to Rock.
  • Until Charon's introduction, Cyrus was the only one of the four major characters of Team Galactic that does not share a name with a planet. Charon's Japanese namesake, Pluto, is a dwarf planet, but was considered a planet between its 1930 discovery and 2006. Charon is the largest of Pluto's three moons. This makes Cyrus the only named Team Galactic member who is not named for a solar system object (though his English and German names are derived from one).
  • Cyrus is the first leader of a villainous team to appear in the opening of a game.
  • Although there are only three red gems visible on each of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, Cyrus will recreate the Red Chain as many times as the player loses to him.
  • Cyrus is the only member of Team Galactic shown to have a Crobat, although many are seen to have its previous forms.
  • Cyrus is the first leader of a villainous team to have his age confirmed. Looker confirms his age in the Team Galactic Headquarters in Veilstone City.
  • Cyrus is also the first leader of a main series villainous team whose English name does not end in a long "e" sound.
  • Cyrus shares a Pokémon with Giovanni, another leader of a villainous gang, though the latter was never shown with one until the release of the HeartGold and SoulSilver versions.
    • Additionally, it is worth noting that Silver, a counterpart to Giovanni's own son, also possesses a Honchkrow.
