Fling (Japanese: なげつける Throw) is a damage-dealing Dark-type move introduced in Generation IV. It has been TM56 since Generation IV.

Effect

The power of Fling is determined by the held item. The move will fail if the user has no held item, or if the item is not one listed below. After using Fling, the item disappears.

The power of Fling is calculated as:

Power Items
10 All Berries, All Incenses, All Scarves, BrightPowder, White Herb, Soothe Bell, Mental Herb, Choice Band, SilverPowder, Focus Band, Leftovers, Soft Sand, Metal Powder, Wide Lens, Muscle Band, Wise Glasses, Expert Belt, Power Herb, Quick Powder, Focus Sash, Zoom Lens, Lagging Tail, Destiny Knot, Smooth Rock, Shed Shell, Big Root, Choice Specs, Reaper Cloth, Air Balloon, Red Card, Ring Target
20 All Wings
30 All medicines, All herbal medicine, All Revives, All drinks, All Ethers and Elixirs, All Repels, All Vitamins, All Shards, All Mulches, All battle items, All Flutes, Lava Cookie, Sacred Ash, Old Gateau, Poké Doll, Fluffy Tail, Shoal Salt, Shoal Shell, Escape Rope, Sun Stone, Moon Stone, Fire Stone, Thunderstone, Water Stone, Leaf Stone, Everstone, TinyMushroom, Big Mushroom, Pearl, Big Pearl, Stardust, Star Piece, Nugget, Heart Scale, Honey, Exp. Share, King's Rock, Amulet Coin, Cleanse Tag, Soul Dew, DeepSeaScale, Lucky Egg, Scope Lens, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, Light Ball, Smoke Ball, Miracle Seed, BlackGlasses, Black Belt, Magnet, Mystic Water, NeverMeltIce, Spell Tag, TwistedSpoon, Charcoal, Up-Grade, Shell Bell, Light Clay, Life Orb, Toxic Orb, Flame Orb, Metronome, Black Sludge, Razor Fang, Prism Scale, Float Stone, Binding Band, Absorb Bulb, Cell Battery, Eject Button, Poké Toy, BalmMushroom, Big Nugget, Pearl String, Comet Shard, Pass Orb, Relic Copper, Relic Silver, Relic Gold, Relic Vase, Relic Statue, Relic Crown, Casteliacone, Sweet Heart
40 Lucky Punch, Icy Rock, Eviolite
50 Sharp Beak, Dubious Disc
60 Adamant Orb, Lustrous Orb, Macho Brace, Stick, Heat Rock, Damp Rock, Rocky Helmet
70 Poison Barb, Dragon Fang, Power Bracer, Power Belt, Power Lens, Power Band, Power Anklet, Power Weight, All Drives
80 Shiny Stone, Dusk Stone, Dawn Stone, Oval Stone, Odd Keystone, Quick Claw, Sticky Barb, Protector, Electirizer, Magmarizer, Razor Claw
90 All Plates, DeepSeaTooth, Thick Club, Grip Claw
100 All Fossils, Rare Bone, Hard Stone
130 Iron Ball

BlackGlasses, Dread Plate, Muscle Band, and Choice Band boost the power of Fling. Expert Belt boosts the power of Fling if the attack is super effective. Life Orb boosts the power of Fling but does not reduce the user's HP. If the user hits its opponent with a Berry, the effect of the Berry will be activated. Additionally, some items will cause other effects when used with Fling:

Item Effect Power
Bag Flame Orb Sprite.png Flame Orb Causes a Burn 30
Bag King's Rock Sprite.png King's Rock Causes the target to Flinch 30
Bag Light Ball Sprite.png Light Ball Paralyzes the target 30
Bag Mental Herb Sprite.png Mental Herb Cures Infatuation 10
Bag Poison Barb Sprite.png Poison Barb Poisons the target 70
Bag Razor Fang Sprite.png Razor Fang Causes the target to Flinch 30
Bag Toxic Orb Sprite.png Toxic Orb Badly poisons the target 30
Bag White Herb Sprite.png White Herb Fixes stat loss on the target 10

Fling will fail if used by an Arceus holding a Plate or a Giratina holding the Griseous Orb, though neither Pokémon can normally have this move. It will also fail if used when the Pokémon is holding any type of Gem, Poké Ball, or Mail. An effect that prevents a Pokémon from using items will prevent the use of Fling; Embargo, Klutz, Knock Off, and Unnerve (if the Pokémon is holding a Berry) all prevent the usage of Fling.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

The user seizes the nearest enemy Pokémon and throws it into another enemy, dealing 10 damage to both parties. This move is classified as "other" instead of Physical.

Trivia

  • Fling, along with Fake Out, are the only moves that have a 100% chance of causing flinching, though a King's Rock or Razor Fang must be flung in order to cause flinching.
  • Fling will fail if the user is holding a Poké Ball or any variant. This is probably to prevent confusion should a flung Poké Ball hit a wild Pokémon and do damage rather than try to catch it.
  • Fling is the only Dark-type move able to cause paralysis, burn, or poisoning.
  • In the anime, Fling can also be used to throw the remains of attacks, such as when Bianca's Emboar flung the remains of Trip's Conkeldurr's Stone Edge at it. It can also be used to throw the opponent.
