Metang (Japanese: メタング Metang) is a dual-type Steel/Psychic Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Beldum starting at level 20 and evolves into Metagross starting at level 45.

Biology

Metang is a robotic Pokémon with teal, metallic skin. It has a disc-shaped body with a pair of flat, gray spikes on either side toward the rear. A jet cannot scratch Metang due to its strong body. There is a gray spike in the middle of its face, similar to a nose. A pair of red eyes reside in two holes in its metallic skin. While it appears to lack legs, it has a pair of thick arms with three claws on the ends. The arms are considerably thicker below the elbow and have a flat, blunt protrusion extending over the joint.

Metang is formed when two Beldum fuse together. A magnetic nervous system joins the brains of these two Pokémon. This linkage allows Metang to generate a strong, psychokinetic power that is doubled. However, this does not increase its intellect. This Pokémon's high intelligence and strong magnetic field are other sources of powerful psychic energy. In addition to generating psychic power, its magnetism allows Metang to hover in midair. It is able to rotate its arms backwards in order to travel at speeds over 60 mph (100 km/h) in search of prey. When Metang finds its prey, it uses its psychic power to stop it from escaping. Then it firmly grabs onto the prey with its claws, never letting go. Metang's claws are able to rip through steel. This Pokémon lives on rough terrains and harsh mountains. It pursues Nosepass, loving its magnetic minerals.

Evolution

Metang evolves from Beldum and evolves into Metagross.

Major appearances

Morrison's Metang

Metang debuted in Saved by the Beldum, after Morrison's Beldum evolved whilst battling Jump's Electabuzz. It was mostly seen outside its Poké Ball.

Other

In Bibarel Gnaws Best!, the head engineer used a Metang with an Aggron and Magmar to attack a Bibarel, but Bibarel dodged its attack. It was eventually defeated by a combination of Ash's Chimchar's Flamethrower, and Ash's Turtwig's and Brock's Sudowoodo's Razor Leaf attacks.

In Steeling Peace of Mind!, a Metang was affected by Team Galactic's meddling on Iron Island.

In The Synchronicity Test!, Alain used a Metang in a battle against Ash's Noivern and was able to defeat it in a close match. In Analysis Versus Passion!, it was revealed that Metang had evolved into a Metagross.

Starting in A Mission of Ultra Urgency!, Sophocles used a Ride Metang for Ultra Guardians missions. In Sparking Confusion!, it battled a wild Alolan Golem.

Minor appearances

In Pillars of Friendship!, J's henchmen used multiple Metang to attack the Battle Pyramid. They were eventually defeated by Piplup's Bubble Beam.

In Zoroark: Master of Illusions, a Metang was on the Cianwood Greens Pokémon Baccer team with a Beldum and Metagross, which competed in the Pokémon Baccer World Cup. It reappeared in Genesect and the Legend Awakened.

In HZ018, Orla's Metagross appeared as a Metang during a flashback.

Trivia

  • Although it is said that Metang is made up of two Beldum, there is no visible evidence of this. In Saved by the Beldum, the only anime episode to date showing a Beldum evolution, when Morrison's Beldum evolves into Metang, it "creates" another Beldum and newly developed main body to evolve, instead of fusing with another Beldum. Likewise, if a Metang evolution is shown, it is highly unlikely it would involve two Metang evolving together. This is similar to the games.
  • Metang's number in the Hoenn Pokédex in Generation III and the Fiore Browser are the same: 191.
  • Metang and its evolutionary relatives all share both their standard and hidden Abilities with Registeel.

Origin

Metang is made of two Beldum merged. Aside from that, it is visually similar to both flying saucers and crabs.

Name origin

Metang may be a combination of metal and tang (onomatopoeic sound of metal being struck) or étang (French for the color pond blue). Metang is also an anagram of magnet.
