Matt (Japanese: ウシオ Ushio) is one of the Admins of Team Aqua.

In the core series games

Matt at the Aqua Hideout

Matt plays a key role in the main story in Pokémon Sapphire and its remake Pokémon Alpha Sapphire as an Admin to the main villainous team, Team Aqua. His appearances in the corresponding games Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Omega Ruby are limited to minor appearances, as Team Magma are the main villains of these games.

In Pokémon Sapphire, Matt steals the Meteorite from Professor Cozmo at Meteor Falls, and brings it to Archie at Mt. Chimney. At Mt. Chimney, the player has to battle him before they can battle Archie, and stop his attempts to make the volcano dormant. He is next encountered at Slateport City assisting Archie in stealing the Submarine Explorer 1 in order to descend to Seafloor Cavern. He is confronted by the player at the end of the Aqua Hideout outside Lilycove City, battling the player so that the submarine can make its escape. In Pokémon Ruby, Magma Admin Tabitha fulfills the same role.

Due to the nature of Pokémon Emerald combining the stories of Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, Matt only appears once, as his role at Meteor Falls and Mt. Chimney is taken by Tabitha. This single appearance is at the Aqua Hideout, where the player must battle him, which facilitates Archie's escape towards Seafloor Cavern.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, his appearance is dramatically revamped, similarly to Tabitha and Shelly, and his character is expanded upon. In the past, Matt's life was saved by Archie. As a result, he is undyingly loyal to him.[3] He respects strong people like his leader, even people who are otherwise his enemies.

In Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Matt sends a recon team, including Zinnia, to investigate and steal the Devon Parts for Team Aqua; upon failing, they warn him about the player. He eventually discovers the location of the Blue Orb and informs Archie, causing the latter to cancel the operation at Mt. Chimney. Matt is next seen at Southern Island, trying to steal Latias and the Latiasite for Team Aqua, but is stopped by the player and Steven Stone, summoned by Latios to help. He later accompanies Archie at Mt. Pyre, where they retrieve the Blue Orb; when the player arrives and tries to stop them, Archie has Matt battle them while he departs to steal the Submarine Explorer 1 at Slateport City. While the player invades Team Aqua Hideout, Matt once again battles them in order to buy time for Archie to leave for Seafloor Cavern unobstructed. He later watches on as the heavy rain dispels upon Kyogre's defeat or capture.

In the Delta Episode, Matt is so distraught by Archie's crushed dream that he decides to take matters into his own hands. He attempts to rob Wally of his Key Stone, only to be stopped by the player. However, he manages to find another Key Stone near Meteor Falls. He uses the Key Stone and his newly Mega Evolved Sharpedo to attack the Mossdeep Space Center. He is stopped again by the player and Steven, after which Zinnia's Whismur, Aster, steals his Key Stone. He is later seen during the Delta Episode's epilogue, where he reaffirms his loyalty to Archie.

In Omega Ruby, Courtney fulfills Matt's roles. Matt himself is only seen with Archie and Shelly at the Battle Resort, where he joins his leader in thanking the player for stopping Team Magma.

The first Matt in Pokémon Adventures

First Matt

Matt debuts in the Ruby & Sapphire arc. He first appears as a Team Aqua Grunt alongside Shelly and Amber. The three were tasked with stealing the heart component of the Submarine Explorer 1 from Mr. Stone. When Sapphire unintentionally thwarted their original plan to discreetly kidnap Mr. Stone, the three switched to a new plan and directly attacked Mr. Stone in public and stole the component. Sapphire, Gabby, and Ty chased after the three and eventually arrived in Petalburg Woods, where they were attacked by Matt, Shelly, and Amber in order to ensure that no witnesses to their crime would be left alive. With the help of Mr. Stone's Castform, Sapphire manages to escape, but is unable to retrieve the heart component.

Later, Matt, Shelly, and Amber are given promotions from Archie due to their good work. With this promotion, they are given the title Subleaders of the Sea Scheme, or SSS for short. Archie is quick to remind his subordinates that they are still in trouble for leaving the witnesses alive.

The SSS travel to Mt. Chimney so that they can increase the sea level by stopping the volcano's activity. By pretending to be on the side of good, Team Aqua tricks Professor Cozmo into providing a special Meteorite that can stop Mt. Chimney. When they overhear Gym Leader Flannery talking about Sapphire, the SSS attack her in order to get information about their earlier opponent. Flannery is held captive by Matt so that he may lure Sapphire into a trap and kill her while the others finish their jobs. With the use of his Pokémon, Matt nearly drowns Sapphire and Flannery in the cable car, but Sapphire manages to drain the car and defeat Matt. Having won, Sapphire rushes over to stop Team Aqua, but Amber manages to stall her long enough for Shelly to kill Mt. Chimney. With their plan succeeded, Team Aqua escapes and takes Professor Cozmo with them.

When Team Magma and Team Aqua briefly join forces to journey to the bottom of the sea in the Submarine Explorer 1. Matt expresses excitement at the prospect of going to the Seafloor Cavern. When Archie questions if Matt would be able to go, Matt assures his leader that his injuries are almost healed. Archie then proceeds to have his Walrein knock Matt away. Matt is told that for his defeat at Mt. Chimney, he will be left behind and Amber will go in his place.

When Kyogre and Groudon are awakened, the Gym Leaders split into groups in an attempt to stop both Pokémon. In order to prevent their opponents from keeping Kyogre from advancing, each of the SSS splits up and attacks a Gym Leader. Matt faces Winona, and with his Sharpedo, he manages to prevent her Altaria from listening to her commands. Despite this, Matt struggles to fight Winona and is eventually defeated after Winona knocks him into the water as she goes to defend Flannery from Shelly. As he struggles to stay afloat, Matt begs Shelly to help him as she runs away after her battle ended. Shelly refuses and tells Matt to save himself.

In the Chuang Yi translation, he is known as Ark.

Pokémon

Matt owns the following Pokémon in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

Sharpedo
Matt's Sharpedo

Sharpedo is Matt's first known Pokémon. It was first used to attack Mr. Stone at Rustboro City to steal the Submarine Explorer 1's heart component. At Mt. Chimney, Matt used it to attack Sapphire and Flannery after filling a cable car with water. During the battle, Sapphire broke off some of Sharpedo's fangs, which she used to open a hole in the car, draining the water and allowing her to breathe again. She then used her Rono to send Sharpedo and Matt flying out of the car. Later, it fought Winona's Altaria. With its Taunt, Winona was unable to control her Altaria.

Sharpedo's known moves are Bite and Taunt, and its Ability is Rough Skin.

Azumarill
Matt's Azumarill

Azumarill is Matt's second known Pokémon. He was first used to battle Sapphire at the Mt. Chimney cable car. After defeating Sapphire's Chic, he flooded the cable car so that Sapphire and Flannery would drown. He covered Matt's head in a bubble so that his Trainer wouldn't drown as well. When Sapphire drained the car, she used her Rono to send Azumarill flying alongside his Trainer and Sharpedo.

None of Azumarill's moves are known.

Vibrava
Matt's Vibrava

Vibrava is Matt's third known Pokémon. It was first seen being used as flight transportation as Matt watched Kyogre's rampage. Later, it was used to help Matt battle Winona in the air. When Winona went to help Flannery, she knocked Matt off of Vibrava and into the water, defeating him.

None of Vibrava's moves are known, and its Ability is Levitate.

Second Matt

The second Matt in Pokémon Adventures

In the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc, a second Matt appeared as a member of Neo Team Aqua (Japanese: 新生アクア団 Neo Aqua Gang). He, along with a second Shelly, took the name of his predecessor as a codename.

In Kyogre Returns, Matt appeared at Mossdeep City to help Zinnia interfere with the Devon Corporation's plan to launch a rocket that would stop the meteoroid threatening to destroy the world. Along with Courtney, Matt attacked Sapphire, distracting her long enough for Zinnia to land on the rocket. Sapphire dodged their attacks, allowing her to escape and pursue Zinnia.

In PS612, the Admins were attacked by the Hoenn Frontier Brains and defeated. The Brains attempted to interrogate the Admins on Zinnia's whereabouts, only for them to admit they had no idea where she ran off to.

Pokémon
Carvanha
Matt's Carvanha

Carvanha is Matt's only known Pokémon. It was first used at Mossdeep City to attack Sapphire to prevent her from stopping Zinnia's plan.

None of Carvanha's moves are known.

Pokémon

Sharpedo

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Adventures, Matt was originally conceived as a generic "tough guy" character; however, Kusaka and Yamamoto decided that this approach was boring, and Matt was instead written as the most "sensitive and nervous" (「ウシオが一番繊細で神経質」) of the SSS Trio.[4]
