Uxie (Japanese: ユクシー Yuxie) is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Mesprit and Azelf, Uxie is one of the lake guardians created by Arceus. It is known as the Being of Knowledge (Japanese: 知(ち)識(しき)の神(かみ) Chishiki no Kami, "God of Knowledge") in Sinnoh myths.

Biology

Uxie is a small, gray, fairy-like Pokémon. It has two long tails extending from its rear that each have a three tipped leaf-shape on the end. A red jewel is encrusted in the middle of both tail ends. The middle of Uxie’s face is yellow, and its cheeks are light gray. It has a small mouth and closed eyes, with each eyelid being the same yellow as the color on its face. It has another red gem encrusted in its forehead. On the top of its head is a yellow helmet-shaped appendage sporting four rounded bumps each stretching from the front of its head to the back end of the appendage. Its design may be a reference to the shape of a brain, in lieu of Uxie’s title as the “knowledge” Pokémon. Uxie’s body is small, light gray, and teardrop shaped, with tiny pointed feet and simple outstretched arms. Other than its yellow coloration and helmet-shaped appendage, it shares its design with its other lake trio counterparts Mesprit and Azelf.

Uxie always has its eyes closed, as it can wipe out the memory of those who see them. It is both feared and respected for its ability to erase the memories of evil people. Uxie's spirit can leave its body without dying and return at will. It created all knowledge in the Pokémon universe and gave humans the ability to adapt and learn as life goes on, leading it to be referred to as the "Being of Knowledge" in the past. Notably, when Uxie first emerged, humans gained the knowledge needed to solve problems and improved their quality of life. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, it is shown that Uxie can create illusions. It was also shown in The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend! to be able to teleport itself, as well as other Pokémon and humans. Though it is very shy, Uxie will attack with force if it or its friends are threatened. Alongside the other lake guardians, Uxie is needed for the creation of a Red Chain, either through gems extracted from its body or through its claw. Together, they're also capable of destroying a Red Chain. They even have the power to calm down Dialga or Palkia should they be enraged, but not both at once. Uxie lives in Lake Acuity, specifically in the Acuity Cavern at the center of the lake, thus gaining its title as a lake guardian. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Uxie is shown to be capable of speaking human language via telepathy.

Uxie and the other lake guardians are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Mystical Power.

• In Pokémon Battle Revolution, during the Masters Battle Set 4, Mysterial will use a Uxie as part of his team, if the player has copied Pokémon from a save file of any game except Pokémon Pearl.

In the spin-off games

• Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: Uxie is the guardian of the Time Gear at Fogbound Lake. Uxie is the first guardian the player and the partner encounter, creating a fake Groudon to attack those who visit the lake and wiping the memories of those who found the place in order to protect the Time Gear. However, Uxie allows Wigglytuff's Guild to leave with their memories intact when they promise not to reveal the secret. Grovyle later steals Uxie's Time Gear.

Uxie (anime)

In Uncrushing Defeat!, Uxie's "soul" appeared to Brock, much in the same way those of Mesprit and Azelf appeared to Dawn and Ash, respectively.

Uxie physically debuted in The Needs of the Three!, where it, along with Mesprit, came to Lake Valor after Azelf was captured. However, it was also captured by J and Team Galactic, but before it was captured, it used Future Sight with Mesprit, destroying her ship later on. It was then controlled by the team to help fulfill its goal. In The Battle Finale of Legend!, after breaking from their control with the help of Brock's Croagunk and Ash's Gliscor, it helped in stopping Cyrus's plot to use Dialga and Palkia. It reappeared in Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles, helping to stop a rampaging Heatran.

Other

In PK21, a Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit served Pikachu and his friends some apples.

Minor appearances

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness, a Uxie, along with the other members of its trio, were the protectors of the Time Gear.

A Uxie appeared in Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.

In the Diamond & Pearl arc, Uxie was to be captured as part of Team Galactic's plans. Commander Jupiter led the operation to capture Uxie, and overcame resistance from Maylene, Candice and Platinum in order to do so. Uxie connected with Platinum the most, as Platinum had great wisdom; she had also been to Lake Acuity before and saw Uxie, though she did not remember the event. It first appeared in Tackling Tangrowth.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

Along with Mesprit and Azelf, Uxie was captured by Team Galactic to create the Red Chain so that they can control the Legendary Dialga. It was eventually freed and helped stop Dialga by breaking the Red Chain. It first appeared in A Novel Test!!.

A Knowledge Pokémon. It's said that Uxie's emergence gave humans the wisdom to improve their lives. This Pokémon possesses the ability to erase the memory of those who see its eyes. Uxie uses status-altering moves in battle--its frequent use of Yawn is very effective in putting foes to sleep. Uxie makes its home in Lake Acuity in the Sinnoh region.

• Uxie is pronounced "YOOK-zee" according to a segment featuring commonly mispronounced Pokémon names in the 2023 Pokémon World Championships livestreams.
• Uxie is tied with Mesprit and Azelf for the highest base friendship of all Legendary Pokémon.
• In Generation IX, prior to the Version 2.0.1 update of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Uxie was unable to learn moves via Move Reminder.
• In Pokémon GO, Uxie is a region-exclusive Legendary Pokémon generally found in the Asia-Pacific region, while Mesprit is generally found in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and Azelf is generally found in the Americas.

Origin

Uxie seems to be based on a pixie or a fairy and the color yellow. The lake guardians could possibly have originated from the Imperial Regalia of Japan, which are also called the Three Sacred Treasures. Uxie would be the Yata no Kagami, which embodies wisdom and honesty. Additionally, it may draw inspiration from Cherubim—one of the three highest ranking angel classes in Christianity—characterized by knowledge. Another possible inspiration for this Pokémon could be the Greek goddess Hestia (Vesta in Roman) as both are part of a female trio that is highly related to the main trio of both their respective franchises of origin, with both sharing a shy disposition.

Uxie and Yuxie may be a combination of U of the acronym UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal, wasei-eigo for cryptid) and pixie. It may also involve the pronoun you.
