Luvdisc (Japanese: ラブカス Lovecus) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Luvdisc is a fishlike Pokémon with a relatively flat body in the shape of a heart. It is primarily light pink, with pale lips and circular markings on its cheeks. Its body is covered in heart-shaped scales.

Luvdisc lives in shallow tropical warm seas, where it makes its nest in the branches of Corsola or coral reefs. During its breeding season, it forms groups that turn the ocean's surface bright pink. As shown in Luvdisc is a Many Splendored Thing!, when two Luvdisc kiss, they are able to use their slender bodies as wings in order to fly for short periods of time. If a Luvdisc is left alone, it becomes disheartened and open to attacks from predators, such as Pelipper.

Luvdisc is seen as symbol of love and romance; loving couples gave this Pokémon its name after spotting it in the ocean waters. It is said that any couple who sees a Luvdisc will be blessed with eternal love, thus honeymoon hotels usually release this Pokémon into their pools. A tradition in some places is to gift a Luvdisc to a person someone loves. At one point in the past, Luvdisc was overfished due to a rumor that its scales would allow one to find their sweetheart.

Both Misty and Daisy have a Luvdisc, nicknamed Caserin and Luverin, respectively. They acquired the two Rendezvous Pokémon sometime prior to Luvdisc is a Many Splendored Thing!. Caserin and Luverin found themselves the target of Butch and Cassidy under instructions from Dr. Namba.

In The Great Eight Fate!, Juan used a Luvdisc during his Gym battle against Ash to battle his Grovyle. In the following episode, it defeated Grovyle but lost against Corphish.

Minor appearances

Multiple Luvdisc debuted in Clamperl of Wisdom as some of the Pokémon living at Maisie Island.

In Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, multiple Luvdisc were present during the final showdown with the Phantom and his crew. They briefly reappeared in a montage in The Rise of Darkrai, which chronicled the preceding nine movies.

Wallace has a Luvdisc nicknamed Elizabeth, which debuted in Short Shrift for Shiftry. She is usually shown outside of her Poké Ball, floating along beside him. Wallace relies on her to solve problems, as she is shown doing such things as putting out a burning scarf and releasing a Lileep and Anorith to test Ruby's worth at Wallace's request. Also, the two seem to share a bond, as he rarely, if ever, has to specify what he wants her to do. Like all of Wallace's Pokémon in the manga, she is incredibly beautiful and was able to defeat all of Ruby's top Contest Pokémon, excluding Feefee, in an unofficial Contest in a matter of minutes.

Wallace's mentor Juan uses a pair of Luvdisc that first appeared in With a Spoink in Your Step II. They observe him as he trained Ruby and Sapphire.

The Battle Tower rented a Luvdisc, which was stolen by Guile Hideout in The Final Battle VII.

Trivia

• Luvdisc had no Egg Moves in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet prior to Version 2.0.1. This was presumably unintentional, as it regained them in said version. The same situation occurred with Cacnea and Alolan Grimer.

Origin

Luvdisc appears to be based on the discus fish and certain other species of fish that appear to kiss each other, such as the kissing gourami. It is shaped like a heart symbol. Its Shiny coloration may reference the idiom "heart of gold", which describes a loving or caring attitude, being completely without malice.

Name origin

Luvdisc and Lovecus may be a combination of love and discus.
