Baoba is from [[Kanto]], the home of the original [[Kanto Safari Zone|Safari Zone]]. In the events of the original {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, this area is closed to the player; it is revealed in [[Generation IV]] that Kanto's [[Pal Park]] is located there instead. Because he is such a fan of the Safari Game played within the Zone, Baoba decides to build a new one in the [[Johto]] region. This is explained to the player the first time he or she meets him, on [[Route 38]]. They will also receive Baoba's phone number.

The warden plays the same role in {{game5|Red|Blue|Yellow|FireRed|LeafGreen}}. He is first encountered in his house east of [[Fuchsia City]]'s [[Pokémon Center]]. When spoken with, he can only mumble: the [[Gold Teeth|false teeth]] he wears have been lost deep in the Safari Zone. If they are returned to him, he will reward the {{player}} with {{HM|04|Strength}}.


The entrance to Baoba's Safari Zone is located at the north end of [[Route 48]]. It will not be able to be reached, however, until after [[Amphy]] the {{p|Ampharos}} in the [[Glitter Lighthouse]] has been healed with the [[SecretPotion]]. Baoba will call the player on their [[PokéGear]] to let them know that the area is open for business.
To encourage interest in the Safari Zone, the Warden runs a special promotion: [[Pokémon Trainer]]s who are able to locate the Secret House at the far end of the Safari Zone within the allotted step limit are given {{HM|03|Surf}}. This Hidden Machine is required to progress to [[Cinnabar Island]].


While the Safari Zone is by no means a compulsory part of the game, it is useful for obtaining rare and valuable Pokémon. Baoba will periodically issue challenges to those who wish to play a Safari Game. The first challenge is to capture a Geodude in the Safari Zone and then show it to him. This task is quite easy as Geodude is found in the first area of the Safari Zone. When you have showed the Geodude to Baoba he will say something about calling you when the changes have been done. After approximately 12 to 24 hours he will call you and say that the changes are done. When you arrive inside the gatehouse he will explain to you that you can now customize the Safari Zone with the machine next to the counter. This is quite useful because you can now place the various areas based on how much you use them. After the first challange you also unlock some adittional ares that you can add to the Safari Zone with the customization machine.

The locals of Fuchsia City nicknamed him "Warden Slowpoke" because of his vacant look similar to that of a {{p|Slowpoke}}. Despite this appearance, he is actually very knowledgeable about Pokémon. He takes care of all the Pokémon in the Safari Zone and Zoo, and has a large collection of Pokémon [[Fossil]]s as well. The warden is good friends with [[Koga]], the Gym Leader of Fuchsia City. Koga will sometimes patrol the Safari Zone as security.


The second challange is to catch a Sandshrew in the Safari Zone. This can be a little tricky as you have to add the Desert Area to the Safari Zone with the customization machine before you start. After you have done the challenge and showed the Sandshrew to Baoba, he will say that he will call you later. It is still unclear when he call you after this, but it is assumed that you have to obtain the National Dex first. When you arrive at the Safari Zone after Baoba calls you he will explain to you that you can now add decorations to the Safari Zone to lure out Pokemon that are a higher level, and matbe not native to the Kanto or Johto region.
Three years after the initial defeat of Team Rocket, Baoba closes the Safari Zone and goes traveling. In {{game2|Gold|Silver|Crystal}} the Safari Zone simply cannot be accessed; however, in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}} a [[Pal Park]] is in its place. It is stated by Baoba's grandchild that Baoba's son runs the Pal Park. On his travels, Baoba decides to open a new Safari Zone in Johto; the site he chooses is at the northern end of {{rt|48|Johto}}. As part of the games' plot, the player will meet with Baoba on {{rt|39|Johto}}, who promises to inform the player as soon as the Safari Zone is open for business. He will call, announcing the opening of the Safari Zone, once [[Amphy]] the {{p|Ampharos}} of the [[Olivine Lighthouse]] has been healed.
 
Throughout the remainder of the game, Baoba will issue two challenges to the player: catch a {{p|Geodude}} in the Safari Zone and catch a {{p|Sandshrew}} in the Safari Zone. The Safari Zone warden is known as Kaiser in the anime, because he had no official first name when his episode was made. He appeared in [[EP035]]. He found a {{p|Dratini}} in the Safari Zone as a boy, but as a result of media hype surrounding the event the Dratini retreated into a lake and Kaiser resolved to protecting the Safari Zone and the Pokémon that live within it. {{an|Professor Oak}} states that he knows the warden well.

Baoba (Japanese: バオバ Baoba) is a non-player character that first appeared in Pokémon Red and Blue. At that time, he was the owner and warden of the Kanto Safari Zone in Fuchsia City and was known simply as Safari Zone Warden. (Japanese: 園長 Park Head).
