Hitmonchan (Japanese: エビワラー Ebiwalar) is a Fighting-type Pokémon.

He evolves from Tyrogue starting at level 20 when Tyrogue's Defense is higher than his Attack. He is one of Tyrogue's final forms, the others being Hitmonlee and Hitmontop.

Biology

Physiology

Hitmonchan is a tan colored, human-shaped Pokémon. His body resembles a light purple tunic with a kilt and fists resemble red boxing gloves. His enlarged shoulders give the appearance of shoulder pads. His purple feet give the appearance of a pair of a boxer shoes. Unlike his parallel evolution, Hitmonlee, he has a mouth and a visible separation between body and head.

Gender differences

Hitmonchan is a male-only species with no female counterpart.

Special abilities

Hitmonchan's most notable ability is his wide versatility in boxing. His major attacks are almost all punches, making use of the boxing gloves that protect his fists. He used to be the only Pokémon who could learn all three elemental punches.

Hitmonchan are well known for their capability of lightning-fast punches that are faster than bullet trains and impossible to be seen by the naked human eye. When doing this, they sometimes appear as if they are standing still, as the assault is too fast to be seen.

Although they have an extremely well developed talent in quick, light blows, Hitmonchan can also throw power-packed punches. By punching in corkscrew fashion, they are able to punch through solid concrete in the same way as a drill. Like most Fighting Pokémon, he can also learn some Rock and Ground moves.

Before attacking a target, Hitmonchan will spin his arms to increase the power of his attacks. Both his speed and power punches slice the air, and are launched at such a high speed, just a slight graze by one can cause a burn.

Behavior

It is widely said that Hitmonchan possesses the spirit of a professional boxer working towards the world championship. With an indomitable spirit pushing him to work harder, he never gives up, especially in the face of adversity. However, he usually needs a short break after each fight he takes part in.

Hitmonchan are known to casually practice and hone their abilities by launching unseen volleys of punches. Since they are not normally found in the wild, it can be hard to determine their behavior without a Trainer's influence. When under the possession of a Trainer, however, a Hitmonchan will eventually take after the person, as most Pokémon do; he may become a hard worker, striving to become better, or he might fight for bad purposes without question.

Habitat

Hitmonchan are extremely rare in the wild, and have virtually never been seen. He is an urban species that would typically be found near cities or suburbs rather than in forests. But, some Hitmonchan have been known to train in the mountains or at facilities made for such work, such as an abandoned fighting dojo. While it is unknown where they came from originally, they were first found in Kanto.

Major appearances

Hitmonchan's first appearance was in The Punchy Pokémon under a Trainer named Anthony. He was entered in the P1 Grand Prix, but ended up losing to a Hitmonlee stolen by Team Rocket because the match was sabotaged.

In Stage Fight!, Hitmonchan was a major performer in a Pokémon show, where the plot was around a boxing match between him and a glove-wearing Machoke.

In Chikorita's Big Upset, one was part of a group of Fighting-type Pokémon that roamed the streets of the city as a gang.

Minor appearances

In Showdown at Dark City, he was one of the Pokémon owned by a Yas Gym Trainer.

In Riddle Me This, Hitmonchan was one of the Pokémon shown in an exercise Gym. Team Rocket tried to steal the group of Fighting-type Pokémon, but were stopped by Ash and his friends.

Bruno used a Hitmonchan in To Master the Onixpected!.

A Hitmonchan under the ownership of an unknown Trainer, appeared in Friends to the End, during the closing ceremonies of the Indigo League.

During The Lost Lapras, one was owned by an obnoxious Trainer that used him to attack a beached Lapras.

A Hitmonchan was among the Pokémon controlled by Cassidy and Butch in Pikachu Re-Volts.

Rudy had a Hitmonchan in Misty Meets Her Match.

Hitmonchan also appeared in The Power of One.

A Hitmonchan was seen in a dojo in Wired for Battle!.

Two Hits and a Miss featured a fighting-type dojo where one of the many Pokémon was a Hitmonchan.

In A Tyrogue Full of Trouble, Karate King Kiyo owned one and fought alongside him to break a rolling boulder. He later used Hitmonchan in battle to attempt to capture a wild Tyrogue.

In Gotta Catch Ya Later!, one was used in battle by one of the Invincible Pokémon Brothers.

Another classic replay of the Hitmonlee versus Hitmonchan battle was performed in Pasta La Vista. A Trainer named Kyle owned a Hitmonchan that was used in battle to decide the fate of his father's fighting dojo.

Trivia

  • Hitmonchan learns the most increased-priority moves by level up out of all Pokémon, with six.
  • Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are the only Pokémon that weren't previously related through an evolution family, then later gained a shared pre-evolution.
  • Hitmonchan's colors reference the traditional boxing colors, referring to the red corner (normal) and the blue corner (Shiny).

Origin

He may be a personification of boxing, a fighting style and sport that focuses on punching. His head and "hair" slightly resembles a human hand.

Name origin

Hitmonchan is a combination of hit, monster, and Chan (a reference to Jackie Chan), perhaps meaning "the monster that hits like Jackie Chan". The name is also related to Hitmonlee and Hitmontop, both of which are parallel evolutions to it as of Generation II.

Ebiwalar is derived from the Japanese world champion boxer, Hiroyuki Ebihara.
