Mesagoza was introduced as a Stadium card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Violet ex expansion and the English Scarlet & Violet expansion, with artwork by Oswaldo KATO. It allows players to flip a coin once during their turn. If heads, the player searches their deck for a Pokémon, reveals it, and puts it into their hand. Then, the player shuffles their deck.

Trivia

  • Mesagoza is the most populous city currently known in the Pokémon world, with a population of 756.
  • For the Video Game Championships division of the 2023 World Championships, a special variation of Mesagoza was used from the top 32 onwards. This special variation is festival themed, with the battles taking place at the city's battle court. Fireworks can be seen erupting from behind the school, and the Worlds exclusive battlefield features new camera shots specifically for the tournament. The camera shots introduced for the World Championships would later be added to regular online games in version 2.0.1 of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Origin

Main article: Pokémon world in relation to the real world → Paldea

Mesagoza looks like a combination of several Spanish cities and Lisbon. Geographically, it is based on Toledo or Madrid, two major cities in the center of Spain. The English name also references the city of Zaragoza. It draws heavy inspiration from Barcelona, notably with the similarities between Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV and the Sagrada Família, as well as several parts of the city being based on Park Güell and its Trencadís mosaics. The bridges that lead to the city resemble the Puente de Alcántara, over the Tagus river. The central plaza's architecture seems to be based on the Plaza Mayor in Madrid and the Praça do Comércio in Lisbon. The streets around it also appear to take inspiration from Lisbon, as well as the old towns of Toledo and Zaragoza.
