Reason: History & Role in Pokémon Masters EX

History

Ethan has experienced similar events to his core series counterpart as the player character. Ethan grew up and became best friends with Lyra in New Bark Town.[3] Ethan received a first partner Pokémon from Professor Elm and left New Bark Town. While on his journey, Ethan had a rivalry with Silver, battled the Gym Leader Morty,[4] and defeated Team Rocket in Goldenrod City. During his journey, Ethan caught a Cyndaquil and a Lugia.

Cyndaquil → Quilava → Typhlosion

Cyndaquil can evolve into Quilava once it has reached level 30 through its sync pair story Cyndaquil's Evolution, and then into Typhlosion once it has reached level 45 through its sync pair story Quilava's Evolution.

Trivia

  • Ethan is based on the player character of the Johto-based games, as his rival is Silver, who has the first partner Pokémon with a type advantage over Ethan, and he is mentioned to have defeated Team Rocket in Goldenrod City.
  • Ethan is childhood friends with Lyra that he also considers a rival.[7]
  • All versions of Ethan use special voice-over lines upon entering a team that contains certain Trainers (regardless of their partner Pokémon). Those Trainers include Kris, Silver, Lyra, Red, Lance, and Professor Oak.
    • Ethan also uses special voice-over lines upon winning a battle with Kris, Silver, Lyra, Red, or Lance in the same team.
  • On release, one of Sygna Suit Ethan's "Aeroblast: Power +1" sync grid tiles cost 10 energy despite surrounding "Aeroblast: Power +2" tiles costing 3 energy. This was fixed in version 2.22.0, and all players received 840 co-op sync orbs as compensation.

Origin

Ethan's design is based on his appearance in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Cyndaquil is one of the first partner Pokémon of Johto in the core series games. In addition, Ethan's anime and Pokémon Adventures counterparts have also been depicted with Cyndaquil and its evolutions. Cyndaquil, Quilava, and Typhlosion's Dex entries come from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Lugia is a Legendary Pokémon that can be caught at the Whirl Islands in the Johto-based games, with the story of SoulSilver largely revolving around it. Lugia's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
