| Pokémon world locations | ||||
The Barren Badlands (Japanese: カラリ荒野 Karari Badlands) are a location on Voluca Island of the Lental region. It was added in the version 2.0.0 update to New Pokémon Snap on August 4, 2021.
Layout
The course starts in a barren desert where many Ground, Rock and Fire-type Pokémon can be found. Two geysers can be found at the start of the route, which spurt out water on occasion. After passing several rocky arches, the desert is followed by poisonous swamps where Poison-type Pokémon such as Koffing and Swalot can be found. Several craters formed by falling Minior can be found past the swamps. The course ends in a large canyon where many holes litter the rocky walls of the canyon.
In the night, the route is mostly unchanged, although nocturnal Pokémon such as Gliscor can be seen.
Alternate routes
- Illuminating the first crystabloom early on the Day route will cause a Minior to fall down and knock a large boulder. The boulder will roll into the first geyser, allowing the NEO-ONE to pass to the left of the boulder. As the NEO-ONE passes the second geyser, the geyser will activate, bringing the NEO-ONE onto the rocky arches higher up. After traversing several rocky arches, it will join the main path towards the end of the route.
- On the Night route, the boulder must instead be rolled away by illuminating three Diglett with Illumina orbs digging underground at the start of the route, and then taking a photo of them. The three will dig towards the boulder and push it to fall.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 128 | Kangaskhan |
2-3 | A Kangaskhan can be found roaming to the right of the path close to the first crystabloom. Another can be found on research level 3 next to Tepig and Shinx after the poisonous swamps. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 3: A fluffruit thrown at the last Koffing at the swamp will cause it to approach a Tepig. Illuminating the Koffing with an Illumina orb will cause it to inflate then deflate, releasing its poisonous gases. Tepig will become sad after this occurs, triggering Kangaskhan to walk up to it and put Tepig in its pouch. | |||
| 129 | Mandibuzz |
1-3 | Mandibuzz appear throughout the route, either perched on rocks or flying overhead. | |
| 130 | Minior |
1-3 | If the first crystabloom is illuminated with an Illumina orb, a Minior will crash through from above. Other Minior are half-buried in the sand around this area. A second half-buried Minior appears after the swamp. | |
| 131 | Silicobra |
1-3 | A Silicobra can be found buried underground after passing the two geysers. It can be brought out by hitting it with a fluffruit. From research level 2, two Silicobra can be seen on the left at the start of the route, who will be annoying a Scolipede. These Silicobra will then be chased by the Scolipede. Illuminating a crystabloom next to the fleeing Silicobra (on the alternate path) will cause them to speed up, and they will reappear at the end of the route in one of the holes on the sides of the cliff. | |
| 132 | Torchic |
1-3 | A Torchic appears on the right of the path after the first crystabloom. Another can be spotted running on a rock arch with Shinx and Tepig. The three Pokémon including Torchic then appear in a clearing before the valley at the end of the route. Another three Torchic can be found hiding in one of the holes in the valley. Three Torchic also appear on the alternate path. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 2+: A Diglett appears hiding underground beneath the three Torchic on the alternate path. If fluffruit are thrown on the ground above the Torchic, the three Torchic will gather before the Diglett pops out of the ground. The Torchic will jump in fright. | |||
| 134 | Lycanroc |
1-3 | A Lycanroc appear with a Rockruff on the alternate route next to a nest. A Lycanroc also appears running above on the rock arch (research level 1), or can be found hidden in the shade of the rock arch before the poisonous swamps (research level 2+). Another Lycanroc appears roaming around the valley at the end of the route. On research level 3, a Lycanroc . | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 2+: If the Lycanroc at the end of the route is fed a fluffruit (rather than it discarding the fruit) it will let out a roar. | |||
| 135 | Hippowdon |
1-3 | A Hippowdon appears on the rocky ledge to the left of the path at the start of the route. | |
| 137 | Onix |
1-3 | Onix can be seen in the holes of the cliff face at the end of the route. It will jump across the holes if the three Diglett in this valley are scared away by throwing fluffruit. | |
| 139 | Shinx |
1-3 | A Shinx can be spotted running on a rock arch with Torchic and Tepig. The three Pokémon including Shinx then appear in a clearing before the valley at the end of the route. Tepig and Shinx also appear together after the swamps. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 2+: If Shinx and Tepig after the swamp are brought closer to the half-buried Minior, they will cheer once Minior has been freed (by using an Illumina orb). | |||
| 225 | Diglett |
1-3 | Diglett appear throughout the route. They may appear briefly before burying underneath. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 3: Throwing fluffruit at the underground Diglett at the start of the route will cause two of them to move ahead on the route. They will stop and stay above ground a short distance ahead (with a Rockruff watching), and if a fluffruit is thrown at them, they will bounce the fluffruit across each other. | |||
| 226 | Rockruff |
2-3 | Rockruff appears at the left of the path at the start. Another appears on the alternate path with a Lycanroc close to a nest. | |
| 227 | Salazzle |
2-3 | A Salazzle can be found hiding behind a rock after the first crystabloom. Playing a melody will cause it to come out. It can also be lured across to a patch of sand giving off a scent with a trail of fluffruit. It will then throw sand onto itself. It can also be brought towards Kangaskhan and briefly hiss at the Kangaskhan. Alternatively, if Zeraora is awoken at the start of the route and runs away, Salazzle will follow the Zeraora. It will then reappear in the swamps. On research level 3, Salazzle can also be found high on the alternate route inside a rocky crag. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 3: Playing a melody close to the first crystabloom will cause the Salazzle to come out. Throwing an Illumina orb while the melody is playing will cause it to pose. | |||
| 228 | Tepig |
1-3 | A Tepig appears at the start of the route, and will then run towards the left of the geysers. A Tepig will also appear alongside Shinx and Torchic running across a rock arch, and then later with Shinx past the swamp. Tepig alongside Shinx and Torchic appear before the valley at the end of the route. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 2+: On the alternate path, Tepig can be seen attempting to jump off a cliff. Scanning will cause Tepig to jump onto the lower ledge. It will then run towards another gap that it will attempt to jump. Throwing an Illumina orb at it will cause it to jump to the other side. | |||
| 229 | Crustle |
1-3 | Two Crustle appear can be seen by the first geyser. They will be fighting each other from research level 2. Another can be found on the alternate route near a crystabloom. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 2+: Illuminating one of the two Crustle at the start of the route will cause it to win the tussle. It will then cheer. | |||
| 231 | Scolipede |
2-3 | A Scolipede can be found on a rocky ledge to the left at the start of the route. It will initially be sleeping until it is awoken by two Silicobra bothering it. It will then chase after the Silicobra. Near the end of the alternate path, a Scolipede can be seen sleeping with Shinx and Torchic (research level 2), or two Scolipede fighting (research level 3). | |
| 232 | Koffing |
1-3 | Koffing appear floating around the poisonous swamps. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 3: Illuminating the Koffing near the crystabloom may sometimes cause it to inflate a significant amount. The chances of this occurring are increased if the Koffing to the right of the path (before the swamp) is illuminated, causing it to move towards the swamp. Alternatively, throwing a fluffruit on top of a small mountain to the right of the path in the swamp will cause a Koffing to descend. It will then be swallowed up by a Swalot. | |||
| 233 | Swalot |
1-3 | Swalot appear in the poisonous swamps. | |
| ★★★★ | Research level 3: Throwing a fluffruit on top of a small mountain to the right of the path in the swamp will cause a Koffing to descend. It will then be swallowed up by a Swalot. | |||
| 234 | Zeraora |
3 | Zeraora appears sleeping on a rocky ledge to the right of the path towards the start. If awoken, it will run away, and then reappear at the end of the route. |

| Let's Play! | Diglett doesn’t seem interested in eating my fluffruit. Maybe it’s not hungry... But we can toss a few more to it, just in case! | Level 3 | Throwing fluffruit at the underground Diglett at the start of the route will cause two of them to move ahead on the route. They will stop and stay above ground a short distance ahead (with a Rockruff watching), and if a fluffruit is thrown at them, they will bounce the fluffruit across each other. | Oh wow! Look at how much fun they’re having! I guess they were more in the mood to play. | Design 22
(Frame) |
| A Brave Leap | I thought this might be dangerous at first, but then I realized that Tepig can probably make the jump! You should cheer it on, too! | Level 2+ | On the alternate path, Tepig can be seen attempting to jump off a cliff. Scanning will cause Tepig to jump onto the lower ledge. It will then run towards another gap that it will attempt to jump. Throwing an Illumina orb at it will cause it to jump to the other side. | Yay, it jumped! The professor sure wasn’t kidding when he said Tepig has an impressive jump! Thanks for getting that! | Accessory 13
(Sticker) |
| An Alluring Pose | Phil reported in his research that Salazzle strike a unique pose after they finish dancing. Mind looking into that? | Level 3 | Playing a melody close to the first crystabloom will cause the Salazzle to come out. Throwing an Illumina orb while the melody is playing will cause it to pose. | Yup, that’s the pose I was talking about! I wonder if it’s trying to lure something closer to it! | None |
| Gigantic Koffing | Guess what! I saw a Koffing that was, like, ridiculously huge! I could’ve gotten a shot of it if I hadn’t freaked out and dropped my camera! | Level 3 | Illuminating the Koffing near the crystabloom at the swamp may sometimes cause it to inflate a significant amount. The chances of this occurring are increased if the Koffing to the right of the path (before the swamp) is illuminated, causing it to move towards the swamp. | Yeah, that’s the one! It’s even bigger than when I saw it! Wait... What if it explodes?! | Glasses 7
(Sticker) |
| Open Wide! | I heard a really loud noise, then saw Koffing blasting away! I wonder what happened! | Level 3 | Throwing a fluffruit on top of a small mountain to the right of the path in the swamp will cause a Koffing to descend. It will then be swallowed up by a Swalot. | What?! Swalot was trying to eat it?! Oh, I get it. The Koffing I saw before had probably just been spat out! | None |

| ★★★★ | Research level 1+: A photo of any Savanna Pattern Vivillon will grant a ★★★★ photo. Research level 2: If the alternate path is taken, a Gliscor will appear below as the NEO-ONE is ascending the geyser. Interrupting the Gliscor with a fluffruit will cause it to fly towards the left. Illuminating the Sandstorm Pattern Vivillon will cause it to bump into the Savanna Pattern Vivillon. This Vivillon will then spray Gliscor with a sleep-inducing powder move, causing Gliscor to yawn. Alternatively, three Vivillon can be found flying at the start of the route. Throwing Illumina orbs at these three will cause them to gather the other Vivillon and fly away. | Guardian of Friends | Rockruff may be small, but they’re very brave. They protect their friends in times of need. | Level 2 | On the alternate path, a Rockruff can be seen sleeping with Tepig, Torchic, and Shinx. Throwing fluffruit at Rockruff will cause it to wake up. Mandibuzz will fly in and intimidate the four Pokémon. Throwing an Illumina orb at Rockruff will cause it to roar. | Oh, that’s some great timing! Looks like it was a sticky situation, but you got a great shot of Rockruff being brave! | Flower 5

| Crust-side Down | That boulder Crustle carries on its back is solid and has quite a bit of weight. I imagine it’d be tough for it to right itself if it’s ever flipped on its back. | Level 2 | Tyranitar at the start of the route can be awoken by throwing a fluffruit at it. If it has been awoken early enough that it has yet to se the NEO-ONE, Tyranitar will instead attack a nearby Crustle with its tail. Crustle will be flipped upside down after this attack. | Wow, look at that! It must be super strong to get back on its feet like that! | Glasses 6

| Gassy Swamp Battle | Heh, I saw something awesome! Even though its opponent was midair, that Scolipede launched an amazing attack! | Level 2 | The first Sandshrew to the left of the path can be illuminated to cause it to roll down the hill. If the Diglett to the left of the path is also illuminated, the Sandshrew's roll will be halted by the Diglett who has popped up out of the ground. It will encounter the awoken Scolipede and then begin to fight. | That’s it! How cool is that? I’m gonna be the one to snap it next time, so...gotta go! I’m heading back out to the Barren Badlands! | Effect 8
(Frame) |
| Sleepy Gliscor | I saw a Gliscor yawning! I never see ’em during the day, so I thought that’s probably when they sleep... But if that’s the case, why’d it look so sleepy? | Level 2 | If the alternate path is taken, a Gliscor will appear below the NEO-ONE as it is ascending the geyser. Interrupting the Gliscor with a fluffruit will cause it to fly towards the left. Illuminating the Sandstorm Pattern Vivillon will cause it to bump into the Savanna Pattern Vivillon. This Vivillon will then spray Gliscor with a sleep-inducing powder move, causing Gliscor to yawn | Wait, so it was just Vivillon making it sleepy? I guess it wasn’t sleeping in after all. | None |
| Illusion of the Badlands | I hear that Zeraora sometimes changes something about its appearance. Could you get a picture of that for me? | Level 2 | Zeraora must be awoken at the start of the route. If Tyranitar is then woken up with a fluffruit (before it sees the NEO-ONE pass by), it will get angered and throw up sand around itself. Zeraora will stop the sandstorm by jumping down with a bolt of lightning, and begin to fight Tyranitar by charging electricity around itself. | Thanks! It must be circulating that electric energy all around its body! Fascinating! | Sparkles 5

| Valley of Vivillon | We found some Vivillon scales here from a Vivillon form I didn’t expect to see in this climate. Can you check it out? | Level 2 | Three Vivillon can be found flying at the start of the route. Throwing Illumina orbs at these three will cause them to gather the other Vivillon and fly away. If the alternate path is taken, the Vivillon can be seen flying around to the right. Illuminating the crystabloom on the alternate path will cause them to gather. | It seems these Vivillon were so attracted by the energy of this valley, they traveled across the sea to come here! Fascinating! | None |
