Charizard (Japanese: リザードン Lizardon) is a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon.

Charizard comes with the Ability Blaze, which increases the power of Fire-type attacks by 50% once the Pokémon has less than one-third of its maximum HP.

Charizard evolves from Charmeleon starting at Level 36.

Charizard is the version mascot of both Pokémon Red and Pokémon FireRed, appearing on the boxart of both.

Biology

Physiology

Unlike its pre-evolution cousins, it has powerful wings that can allow it to fly at blinding speeds, although the faster it flies, the more strain is put on the Pokémon, and it must rest for a good while after doing so. It is also more vulnerable to attacks the more outspread its wings are, so its newfound flying ability should be treated with as much care as a flying Pokémon. It has a considerably higher defense than its cousins, though as noted before caution should be used about its wings, which have little defense. Its physical strength now matches the strength of its fire attacks, and it can withstand mid-high altitude pressure, allowing it to fly above mountains, and can even withstand the high pressure and extreme heat of volcanoes. Its a very powerful Pokémon to own, but you have to make sure it likes and obeys you before it evolves, or it can ignore or even attack its trainer. Its Rage attack is nigh unstoppable.

Behavior

Generally, a Charizard will be competitive. It loves to battle and spend a great amount of time training or looking for opponents. Its competitive spirit is also noteworthy, since it will never spit flames at a weaker foe. When it gets very angered, the flames on its tail become a blueish-white color. It spits fire that is hot enough to melt boulders. It is known to have unintentionally caused massive forest fires. Charizard flies around in the sky searching for strong opponents. The more experienced a Charizard, the more intense its tail flame and breath are.

The most spectacular behavior of the Charizard occurs during the breeding season. In the wild, a male in control of a territory will send blasts of fire-breath into the sky. This is a signal to females and rivals alike that the resident male is fit, strong, and confident enough to use his fire for a mere display. When a felmale accepts the male, the two fly high into the sky, lock talons and plummet into a dizzying dive. They break apart only a few meters from the ground, combining the passion of mating with the thrill of freefall. After the female lays her eggs, the two parents take turns guarding them and keeping them warm with their flame.

Charizard is mercifully rare in the wild; however, there is a valley somewhere in Johto wherein many Charizard reside. Charizard also inhabit craggy mountains and active volcanoes.

Ash Ketchum has a Charizard that he obtained as a Charmander in Charmander the Stray Pokémon. It evolved into Charmeleon in March of the Exeggutor Squad and quickly evolved again into Charizard in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon. From the time of its becoming Charmeleon to the Orange Islands episode Charizard Chills, Charizard refused to obey Ash. After Charizard Chills, however, it became one of Ash's strongest Pokémon, perhaps even stronger than Pikachu. Ash left Charizard in the Charicific Valley with Liza in Charizard's Burning Ambition. It has returned to visit and battle for him on several occasions since then, however.

When James was in the Pokémon League Entrance Exam in The Ultimate Test, he used a Charizard that he eventually tried to steal.

A Charizard was used by Team Rocket in a battle against Ash's Totodile as part of an elaborate plan to capture Pikachu in One Trick Phoney.

A trainer used a Charizard in the Verdanturf Pokémon Contest in Come What May.

In Those Darn Electabuzz, Casey had to help Corey Demario and his Charizard named Don get their fighting spirit back so that Corey could start pitching for The Electabuzz Baseball Team.

Clark used a Charizard and Quilava against Ash's Grovyle and Glalie in Shocks and Bonds. Clark's Charizard defeated Ash's Grovyle and lost to Ash's Glalie.

In Grating Spaces, Delibird gave a Jessie and James a Charizard and Aggron (James getting Aggron and Jessie getting Charizard, respectively). However, Delibird took the two Pokémon away at the end of the episode as the Charizard and Aggron were meant for Butch and Cassidy.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, one of Green's main Pokémon is a Charizard, evolved from his Charmander. Tucker also has a Charizard in the Battle Frontier storyline.

In Electric Tale of Pikachu, Ritchie has a Charizard, which he pitted against Ash's Charizard in their battle in the Indigo League.

In Pocket Monsters Emerald: Challenge!! Battle Frontier, Rald, the main character's mentor has a Charizard.

In Pokémon Zensho, Satoshi has a Charizard that was originally a Charmander he recieved from Professor Oak.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Charizard will release a Flamethrower diagonally towards the ground, alternating between the left and right.

Trophy information

It's hard to believe, but this massive Flame Pokémon evolves from the tiny Charmander. Not only can it fly at heights of over 4,500 feet, but its flaming breath is hot enough to reduce almost anything to ashes in seconds. The flames at the end of a Charizard's tail are said to be a fairly accurate barometer of its power.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Charizard is a playable Pokémon used by Red. It will be able to use Flamethrower and Rock Smash. It also has the ability to glide. It uses Fire Blast in Red's Final Smash, Triple Finish.

Trivia

• Even though Charizard is supposed to evolve from Charmeleon through leveling up, in Pokémon Snap a Charmeleon evolves by falling into a pit of lava. This may be due to the fact that Snap is more anime-based.
• Charizard is the only evolution of a starter Pokémon that can learn Fly through HM, but it can't in Red & Blue. This was changed starting with Yellow, making it possible to still get a Charizard with Fly in Red/Blue, by trading one from a Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal version.
• Charizard has the same cry as Rhyhorn.

Origin

Charizard resembles the European dragon, which had many forms in the legends that described it. It also closely resembles the fabled Jersey Devil from the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Although it is a Fire-type Pokémon, it can learn Dragon-type attacks, such as Dragon Rage.

Name origin

Charizard's name is a combination of the words char, to burn, and lizard. Lizardon, on the other hand, is a combination of lizard and don, which is a suffix commonly used in dinosaur names.
