Behavior
Habitat
Diet
Main article: Pokémon food
Marill's diet mainly includes plants that grow near or in rivers, including river weeds.
In the anime
Marill first appeared in Pikachu's Vacation. It was causing trouble for Pikachu and co. along with a Raichu, a Snubbull and a Cubone.
Another Marill was used by Tracey Sketchit.
There was a different Marill in For Crying Out Loud. This one was a bit of a crybaby and it got lost in a forest with Misty.
Vivi Winstrate also owns a Marill. When Vivi battled against Max in Candid Camerupt, Max wanted to go easy on Vivi's Marill, but Ash's Corphish refused to abide with Max and defeated Marill anyway.
A Marill also appeared in The Rise of Darkrai, along with an Azumarill and Azurill.

One Marill figure has been released.
Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee
When released from a Poké Ball, Marill will immediately start running in the direction the ball was thrown. Any opponents in the way will be juggled with its DoubleSlap. It can be knocked off the screen with a smash attack.
Trophy information
This Aqua Mouse Pokémon evolves into Azumarill. The round ball on the end of its tail acts like a flotation device, so it can float safely on the roughest of water conditions. It resides on Mt. Mortar in seclusion; few of the creatures are ever seen. Marill's cuteness has earned it a large and loyal fan base.

Pokédex entries
| Gen | Game | Pokédex entry |

| II | Gold | The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, lets it swim without drowning. |
| Silver | The end of its tail serves as a buoy that keeps it from drowning, even in a vicious current. | |
| Crystal | The fur on its body naturally repels water. It can stay dry, even when it plays in the water. | |
| Stadium 2 | The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, lets it swim without drowning. | |
| III | Ruby | Marill's oil-filled tail acts much like a life preserver. If you see just its tail bobbing on the water's surface, it's a sure indication that this Pokémon is diving beneath the water to feed on aquatic plants. |
| Sapphire | When fishing for food at the edge of a fast-running stream, Marill wraps its tail around the trunk of a tree. This Pokémon's tail is flexible and configured to stretch. | |
| Emerald | Its body is covered with water-repellent fur. Because of the fur, it can swim through water at high speed without being slowed by the water's resistance. | |
| FireRed | The end of its tail serves as a buoy that keeps it from drowning, even in a vicious current. | |
| LeafGreen | The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, lets it swim without drowning. | |
| IV | Diamond | Using its tail as a float, it dives underwater. It likes eating plants that grow on river bottoms. |
| Pearl | Using its tail as a float, it dives underwater. It likes eating plants that grow on river bottoms. |

Trivia
- For months prior to to the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Marill was often incorrectly referred to as "Pikablu", likely because of a slight resemblance to Pikachu.
- In its original design, Marill was pink.
- Marill was the third Generation II Pokémon to appear before the Johto series (after Ho-Oh and Togepi, and not counting Pikachu's Vacation).
- Marill's similarity to Pikachu does not come merely from its appearance, as both have an evolution (in Raichu and Azumarill) released in the same generation as they were, and a pre-evolution (Pichu and Azurill) introduced one generation later.
Origin
It may be based upon a combination of a mouse and a beach ball.
Name origin
Marill's name may be a combination of marine, of the water, and rill, a small river or brook. The name may also come from a contraction of the phrase marine blue. In Japanese, the romanization of Maril is Mariru. It's possible that the name could have derived from the Japanese 丸い marui, round or circular, or 鞠 mari, ball and 瑠璃 ruri, lapis lazuli.
