The player's mother, often referred to informally as "mom", is a character in every core series games. Although different each time, she will always be the one to see her child off on his or her journey with his or her starter Pokémon.
When players speaks to their mother, she will heal the party, except in Johto, where the player must instead use the healing machine in Professor Elm's lab. The player's mother may also do several other things specific to the game. When the player is setting off on his or her journey as a Pokémon Trainer, the player's mother will typically give him/her the Running Shoes as a gift, either in person or via a messenger, reading the provided instructions as well. | When players speaks to their mother, she will heal the party, except in Johto, where the player must instead use the healing machine in Professor Elm's lab. :“My, my <player>. Pokémon battle are so lively, aren’t they? I could hear the Pokémon’s cries clear down here! Hm. That sure reminded me of my firth Pokémon battle! Oh, and you know? After a battle, you need to rest your Pokémon!”
*After Healing Player's Pokémon
:“Your Pokémon is looking great! Now, if you’re going out, don’t forget your ‘cross-transceiver’!”

*Outside Juniper's Lab
:“Oh, there you are! And..? What did the Professor have to say? She asked you to complete the Pokédex?! I can’t believe it! Well, actually I can. I already knew she was going to ask. That’s why I brought you three of these Town Maps. Take them with you!”
:“Here you are, Cheren. And one for you too Bianca.”
:“As for your room, <player>-- or what’s left of it… No need for any of you to worry. I’ll take care of tidying up. OK, <player>? Ah, Pokémon. They are so cute, but they have enough power to destroy a bedroom! They really are something. With Pokémon like that at your side, you’ll be safe wherever you go! I’ll let your parents know! I hope that, in addition to Pokémon, you’ll find lots and lots of places you like in the Unova region—and become wonderful adults! Have a great trip!”

*Route 2 | |||
:“<player?> I finally caught up with you… And look how far you’ve come already! Professor Juniper said that you were probably headed for Striaton city by now. I have another present for you. <player>! Try these on!”
:“When you’re wearing the Running Shoes, you can go anywhere in a flash! Let me read you the instructions… ‘hold B button to run faster than normal. Put on the Running shoes and tear around your hearts content!’ That’s what it says. I bought these a long time ago and stashed them away somewhere. I found them when I was cleaning up. Guess its good to clean occasionally! <player> you understand that you’re never really alone, right? You’re with Pokémon, you have friends, and you’re always in my thoughts. That’s all right, then. It has been suggested that this article be moved to Mother. Please discuss whether or not to move it on its talk page. |
The contents of this article have been suggested to be split into several articles. Please discuss it on the talk page for this article. |
The mother (Japanese: おかあさん mother) is a prominent character in the various canons of the Pokémon franchise.
In the core series games
The player's mother, often referred to informally as "mom", is a character in every core series Pokémon game.
Lily, Johanna, and Grace are the only mothers to have their name revealed.
Kanto
This mother is the mother of Red or LeafFRLG. In the Generation I games and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, at the beginning of the games, she will inform the player that Professor Oak wants to see him or her. After that, she will heal the player's Pokémon when talked to. This same mother also appears in the Generation II games and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, telling the player how worried she is about Red, her son, but also how proud she is of him.

Johto
This mother is the mother of Ethan, KrisC, or LyraHGSS. In the Generation II games and HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player's mother informs them that the Pokégear has returned from the repair shop. In Generation II, she then helps set the day of the week and, in non-Japanese and non-Korean releases, set daylight saving time accordingly (except if it's between 11:00 PM and 12:59 AM in-game, in which the game prevents this due to the day of the week changing; she will claim that she lost the instruction booklet for the Pokégear, although not during the initial setup process).
She will save the player's money at their request so that a quarter of the money won from each battle is automatically sent to her, and money can be deposited and withdrawn from her (in HeartGold and SoulSilver, if the player has $999,999 on hand then no additional money earned from battles will be sent to her, contrary to what the end-of-battle dialogue claims). She occasionally buys decorationsGSC, damage-reducing BerriesHGSS, or other items (listed below) with the player's money, then apologizes for spending the money she is saving. Her cooking specialty is the Cinnabar Volcano Burger.

Hoenn
This mother is the mother of Brendan or May and the wife of Norman. In Generation III, the player's mother helps the player move in, and instructs them to set the time on the clock upstairs and to make sure that everything is on their desk. When the player comes back downstairs, she will say that the player's father is on TV; however, the player just missed him.
When the player defeats Norman, she will give an Amulet Coin as a reward.
After the player has entered the Hall of Fame, a news report will be on TV. It will announce that a Pokémon is roaming the Hoenn region, which will be either LatiasS, LatiosR, or it will not distinguish which of the eon duo is the roaming PokémonE, due to static interference. In Emerald, the player's mother will ask if the news report was either about a red creature (Latias) or a blue creature (Latios). The one chosen will then roam Hoenn.

- "<Player>, we're here, honey! It must be tiring riding with our things in the moving truck. Well, this is Littleroot Town. How do you like it? This is our new home! It has a quaint feel, but it seems to be an easy place to live, don't you think? And, you get your own room, <player>! Let's go inside."
- After obtaining the Pokédex

Unova
Nuvema Town
This mother is the mother of Hilbert or Hilda. She lives in Nuvema Town, and she met her husband while he was on his own Pokémon journey. Apparently she was once a Trainer and had a journey of her own.
She mostly stays at home but leaves at one point to deliver the Running Shoes. Looker dresses up as her in the player's house after the defeat of Team Plasma.
In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, much like Red's mother in the Generation II games and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, she still resides in the same house and tells the player that her son or daughter is out in another region looking for N.
If Memory Link has been activated, she will refer to her son or daughter by the player's name from the game the input friend code is from. Otherwise, she will not refer to them by a name, but rather as her child.

- Player's Home
- “Cleaning up? No worries. I’ll take care of it later. Shouldn’t you be on your way to meet Professor Juniper?”
- “My, my <player>. Pokémon battle are so lively, aren’t they? I could hear the Pokémon’s cries clear down here! Hm. That sure reminded me of my firth Pokémon battle! Oh, and you know? After a battle, you need to rest your Pokémon!”
- After Healing Player's Pokémon
- “Your Pokémon is looking great! Now, if you’re going out, don’t forget your ‘cross-transceiver’!”
- “You’re going to thank the professor too, right? Better get going, honey!”
- Outside Juniper's Lab
- “Oh, there you are! And..? What did the Professor have to say? She asked you to complete the Pokédex?! I can’t believe it! Well, actually I can. I already knew she was going to ask. That’s why I brought you three of these Town Maps. Take them with you!”
- “Here you are, Cheren. And one for you too Bianca.”
- “As for your room, <player>-- or what’s left of it… No need for any of you to worry.
- Player's Home
- “Phew! I’m taking a little break from cleaning. You and your Pokémon should take a break too. Good trainers don’t push their Pokémon too hard.”*
- “You and your Pokémon should all be filled with energy again! Now you can go anywhere!”
- On Xtransceiver
- “<player>! It’s your mom! How are things? Are you and your Pokémon getting along and enjoying your journey so far? I needed to talk to you, so i called, but I’m going to hang up the Xtransciever now.”
- Route 2
- “<player?> I finally caught up with you… And look how far you’ve come already! Professor Juniper said that you were probably headed for Striaton city by now. I have another present for you. <player>! Try these on!”
- “When you’re wearing the Running Shoes, you can go anywhere in a flash! Enjoy your trip!”
- On Xtransciever
- “<player!> This is your mom. How are you doing? Wow, you’re already on Routen7? You’ve gone quite far! Say, how are your Pokémon? You can’t get that far all by yourself, you know? It’s all thanks to, your Pokémon. Don’t forget to take care of them! Am I being too serious? Well, take care! ‘Senior Trainer Mom’ signing off!”

Aspertia City
- Talking to Professor Juniper:
- "Oh, hi! Why, Aurea Juniper! It's been far too long! What can I do for you? ... Wow! A Pokédex... For my child? Why, that's great! I think a journey would be a wonderful experience! What now? She's already here? Oh, for Pete's sake. You never change. Once you've decided on something, you just start going. OK! Bianca, right? A big, green hat. Got it. OK! No worries!"
- Returning home:
- "<Player>! I'm home!"
- When the player leaves their room:
- "Do you know Professor Juniper? She's a famous Pokémon researcher. Actually, she's an old friend of mine, and she called me today for the first time in ages! This is out of the blue, but, <player>! Do you want to have a Pokémon?"
- No: "What?! That's a shock! I'll ask you again. Do you want a Pokémon?"
- Yes: "OK! Step one completed! Well then, do you know what a Pokédex is?"
- No: "I see... It's an amazing device that automatically records the Pokémon you encounter! Yet another question! You want a Pokédex, right?"
- Yes: "I knew you would! Isn't it amazing how it automatically records Pokémon you encounter? Yet another question! You want a Pokédex, right?"
- No: "I don't mean to be selfish, but I'd like it if you were a bit more agreeable. Having a Pokédex means travelling around the world! Think about that for a second. So I'll ask you again... You want a Pokédex, right?"
- Yes: "OK! Step two completed! <Player>! Your course of action has been set! A girl named Bianca has come here to meet you! She's Professor Juniper's assistant. I was told to simply look for a big, green hat! That's right! You're going to go look for Bianca. And then you'll get a Pokédex and a Pokémon to be your partner! Oh! Your Xtransceiver's in your Bag right? Do you know how to open your Bag?"
- No: "I'll send you off with these words from “Adventure Rules.” “The X Button is vitally important for Trainers.” OK! Off with you now! Go look for Bianca, OK!"
- Yes: "The girl's name is Bianca. I was told you should look for a big, green hat! She might be lost because this is her first time here. Go look for her!"
- If the player speaks to her again before finding Bianca while alone:
- "The girl's name is Bianca. I was told you should look for a big, green hat! She might be lost because this is her first time here. Go look for her!"
- If the player speaks to her again before finding Bianca while accompanied by Hugh:
- "Oh? Are the both of you out looking for Bianca? You still haven't found her? Look for the big, green hat!"
- Outside the Pokémon Center after finding Bianca:
- "Oh! Nice to meet you! You must be Bianca, right? And <player> picked <starter>, then! Hee hee. Looking good! Oh! I almost forgot! Here! Take these! They're Running Shoes! A perfect fit! I'll read the instructions to you! “Hold the B Button to run faster than normal. Put on the Running Shoes and race around to your heart's content!” Now, you and <starter> can run anywhere you want!" (Hugh's sister gives the player two Town Maps and asks the player to give one to Hugh.) "That's a good idea! Even if it is a single road to the ocean, having a Town Map is always nice. I mean, if you use a Town Map, you'll know all about what the Unova region is like!" (After Bianca tells the player to come to Route 19:) "Bon voyage! Take <starter> and go see many different Pokémon and people with your own eyes!"
- If the player speaks to her again outside the Pokémon Center:
- "Bon voyage! Take <starter> and go see many different Pokémon and people with your own eyes!"
- At home (after having heard Bianca's catching tutorial):
- "Welcome back! Hey, how are your Pokémon? Well, why don't you rest for a moment? Nothing but hard work will wear you out!" (The player's party is healed.)
- Immediately after the player's party has been healed, and if the player speaks to her again before having left the house (random):
- "The same step is a lot more wonderful if it's made while thinking about Pokémon!"
- "I wish we knew how Pokémon felt..."
- "Seeing energetic Pokémon fills me up with energy, too! It reminds me of when I used to work in the Pokémon Center!"
- "When I was younger, I worked at Pokémon Centers all over the place!"
- "Looking good! Both you and your Pokémon seem raring to go!"
Xtransceiver
- Call from the player's mother when the player first enters Virbank City:
- "Hi! It's your mom! Where are you right now? Wow, Virbank City! There's a complex there, right? Have you been there yet? The way it looks at night is really quite nice! And you can also train your Pokémon there! You know, your Pokémon can do some things and you can do others. I hope you can all work together and accomplish amazing things!"
- Mother's opening when the player calls her:
- "Oh! You sound full of energy!"
- When the player is presented with dialogue options:
- "What do you need, dear?"
- "I'd like to talk."
- "There are many different Pokémon, and even the same kind of Pokémon have individuals with completely different Natures! I wonder what kind of Pokémon is a perfect match for you."
(Mother's comment on the place the player is...) |
There are also a few locations which have responses programmed for them, but which cannot actually be selected because the Xtransceiver is not usable in those locations. Additionally, some of the duplicate locations used in the Entralink and Victory Road in Black and White have different responses programmed than the normally accessible locations. The Cold Storage (Entralink) and Challenger's Cave lack responses entirely.

Vaniville Town
- When the player leaves their room:
- "Morning, <player>! You sure slept well! All rested up from the move? <Player>! You look like you just rolled out of bed! Go have a look at yourself in the mirror, and change out of your pajamas."
- After player looks at the mirror:
- "It's about time you got going! Why don't you step out and say hello to the neighbors?"
- After receiving starter:
- "So! What did you and the neighbor kids end up doing? Wait one second, <player>! Is that a Poké Ball you have there? You got your very own Pokémon? Lucky you! How about that? You're a Pokémon Trainer now, too! Congratulations! Huh? A letter for me? It says it's from somebody named Sycamore. What could it be? A love letter? … … … Wow, what lovely handwriting... Hmm? What do we have here? A request... Oh, I see! <Player>! We've barely unpacked, and all kinds of exciting things are happening! OK! Let's get you and <starter> ready for your journey! Here you are, <player>. I even packed a change of clothes. My, what an unexpected turn of events! It's just like a sudden last burst of speed from a racer in a Rhyhorn race! You made friends! You met your Pokémon! And now you get to take a lap around Kalos! Oh, and don't forget this!"
- "You know how to use a Town Map, right?"
- Yes: "That's my boy! Select the Town Map from your Bag whenever you want to use it!"
- No: "Press the X Button to open the Bag. Next, use the +Control Pad to select the KEY ITEMS Pocket. Select the Town Map, and doing a lap around the Kalos region will be a snap!"
- "I don't know what this Professor Sycamore wants you to see on your trip... But taking a journey with your Pokémon is a really wonderful experience."
- After encountering Rhyhorn:
- "Ha ha ha! What a card! I guess Rhyhorn just wanted to give you a big send-off for your journey! Well, it has known you since you were born, after all! Good luck, <player>! Go for broke! And don't worry! You'll have Pokémon by your side, so you'll be fine!"
Vaniville Town (post-game)
- Before meeting Professor Sycamore:
- "<Player>! I saw the parade on TV! Professor Sycamore went all out trying to get everyone to show up for you, you know! That reminds me... I received a message from Professor Sycamore. He says he wants to meet you at Lumiose Station. Do you know where that is? If you don't, it's just a quick cab ride. I wonder why he wants to meet you now, though. He should've just talked to you at the parade..."
- After meeting Professor Sycamore (four variants):
- "All right! You and your Pokémon look raring to go!"
- "My motto is "go for broke!" It means to risk everything and try as hard as possible."
- "A memory from when I was a Rhyhorn racer? There was the time I couldn't stop at the finish line. Your dad was waiting there, and I sent him flying..."
- "The connection that I feel with my Rhyhorn during a race... I want you to feel that kind of closeness with your Pokémon as well."

In side series games
Orre
In Pokémon XD, Michael's mother is a researcher at the Pokémon Lab. Her name is Lily and she has a daughter named Jovi. She takes a supportive role throughout the game by working alongside Professor Krane.
Almia
In Almia, the mother of Kellyn or Kate exchanges letters with their family as they attend Ranger School. The family later moves to Chicole Village to be closer to Kellyn or Kate. She also bought the books on the bookshelf. The mother doesn't do much besides look after her youngest child and take care of the player's inactive partner Pokémon. She later has the player perform a Quest where she asks the player to read a recipe off the fridge for her while she cooks.
In the anime
In the main series
In the anime, each of the main characters which have a player character counterpart have had their mother introduced except for Jimmy and Marina. Unlike the mothers in the games, however, all of them lead a moderately more active lifestyle.
Delia, Ash's mother, is shown to travel to most of the Pokémon League competitions that her son takes part in. She also has her own Pokémon, a Mr. Mime, which cleans the house for her.
Lola, Brock's mother, was, for a time, running the Pewter City Gym while Brock was traveling with Ash on his journey. She is an adept Trainer, however her insistence on using Water-type Pokémon—including attempting to shift Pewter City's Gym's traditional type from Rock to Water—is something she and Brock have butted heads over.
Caroline, May's mother, is also shown to travel a bit to watch her daughter's competitions in the Grand Festivals. Unlike her game counterpart, however, she lives in Petalburg City. She also seems to have Pokémon; however, they are never shown.
Johanna, Dawn's mother, apparently lives life very similarly to her own game counterpart. She has a Glameow and an Umbreon, and was formerly a winner of Sinnoh's Grand Festival.
Grace, Serena's mother, also lives life similarly to her own game counterpart. She has a pet Fletchling and Rhyhorn, and was once a Rhyhorn Racer.

Mortar to train. She reappears in the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc where she gives Crystal a new set of clothes (against her will) based on the outfit that Lyra wears.
Ruby's mother appears in the Ruby & Sapphire arc where she can be seen worrying about her son and her husband.

Trivia
- Generation V is the only generation that introduced two different mother characters for each set of players. However, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 are not the first games in which two mother characters are accessible since Red's mother can be visited in Pallet Town in the Generation II games and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
- Although Red's mother has blue hair in the core series games, his mother has brown hair in Pokémon Origins.
- In Pokémon Gold and Silver, there's leftover code that allows the player to name their mother. A control character displays the mother's name but it is never used. However, the memory address for the mother's name is written to with the player's name as a means of copying the player's name back after the Dude's catching tutorial ends (as the player's name is temporarily replaced with Dude). This mechanic is similar to how watching the old man's demonstration in the Generation I games causes the player's name to be stored in the wild Pokémon encounter data until after it's finished.[1]
