Gimmick

Gimmicks (Japanese: ギミック gimmick), or specialty gimmicks (Japanese:とくいギミック special gimmicks) (when referring to what a Pokémon specializes in), are a type of item that serves as an obstacle in the puzzles of Pokémon Café ReMix. They need to be cleared in order to complete tasks, but each gimmick has a particular requirement to do so: while some can be cleared with a regular combo next to them, others require two or more hits, while others can only be cleared using megaphones or Café Skills. They also behave differently e.g. some gimmicks remain still in one place in the puzzle while other gimmicks bounce around the area as the player moves the icons around to create links. Each Pokémon specializes in at least 3 different gimmicks (some Pokémon have a fourth specialty gimmick that unlocks with kitchen notes) that allow them to clear gimmicks more easily if the order matches their specialty.[1][2]
List of gimmicks
As of Version 6.50 of the game, there are 48 gimmicks available in the game.

Characteristics
Gimmicks have certain characteristics that affect the gameplay and difficulty as the player progresses through the orders. While there are no official terms for these behaviors, the following can be inferred by observation as well as some of the descriptions in-game.
Movability
Gimmicks can either be stationary or movable. Stationary gimmicks remain in one place throughout the duration of the puzzle or until they are cleared. Other gimmicks are movable, so they will bounce around the area of the puzzle as the rest of the icons push them when the player is forming a link. Some gimmicks are heavier or lighter and this will dictate how far or how easily they are moved, thus affecting the difficulty of the puzzle. Certain gimmicks can be considered hybrids, since they are stationary at first until they reach their final stage or they have a stationary part which the movable part connects to.
| Gimmicks by Movability | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Stationary | Movable | Hybrid | |
| Stationary part/stage | Movable part/stage | ||
Stages
Each gimmick has 1 or more stages, which refers to the different states or layers it shows before it is cleared. In order to move one gimmick to its next stage, the player must hit it with a link of Pokémon icons (or the gimmick's required method). The gimmick will go through all its stages before it is cleared, unless a Pokémon with that specialty gimmick is used, which would often clear the gimmick instantly, depending on the gimmick. Some Café Skills specifically advance a gimmick by a number of stages.
Immunity to combos
While most gimmicks are cleared or moved to the next stage by hitting them with a combo of Pokémon icons, there are certain gimmicks that require a megaphone or a Café Skill to be activated in order for them to be hit, as they are unaffected by combos (unless a Pokémon with that specialty gimmick is used). A choux pastry can also be used to clear some of these gimmicks.
| Gimmicks unaffected by combos |
|---|
Two-part gimmicks
Some gimmicks cannot be cleared by hitting them with a combo or using a Café Skill or Megaphone. Instead they consist of two parts that need to be connected to remove them from the puzzle. Other than the walnuts, these gimmicks cannot be dragged directly (unless the player creates a link with a Pokémon whose specialty gimmick is one of these), but they need to be pushed by their surrounding icons until they match.
Open vs. Closed
Some gimmicks change their state from Open to Closed between each turn. These gimmicks can only be cleared or advanced to their next stage when they are open.
| Gimmicks with two states | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Open | Closed | ||
Reversibility
Some gimmicks with more than 1 stage must be cleared in multiple turns in a row, otherwise they will revert back to their initial stage.
| Gimmicks that reverse back to their initial stage |
|---|
Multipliability
Some gimmicks have the capacity to multiply themselves converting a nearby Pokémon icon into a gimmick. They can't multiply if there isn't a Pokémon icon next to them at the end of the turn. If there was a task in the puzzle that required to clear a certain amount of these gimmicks, it will increase by the number of new gimmicks that apepared in the puzzle. In early versions of the game, there were certain circumstances when honey or butter that multiplied next to a Café Skill icon would trigger its activation, but this was changed in future versions so the skill icon instead disappears from its original position and gets dropped from the top of the puzzle.
Containers
Some gimmicks can act as containers, trapping a Pokémon icon, Skill icon, megaphone or even other trappable gimmicks within them. Under certain circumstances, particularly with container gimmicks that are movable and especially when multiple of these are cleared at once and are too close from one another, the gimmicks or icons that are contained may be automatically cleared due to a lack of space in the puzzle.
| Container gimmicks | Trappable gimmicks |
|---|---|
Pollutants
Some gimmicks cover the surrounding icons in another container gimmick after they are cleared (unless they are cleared with a Pokémon whose specialty gimmick is this).

Generators
There are some gimmicks that generate either a Pokémon icon, a Skill icon or a megaphone after they are cleared. The contents are usually covered in another gimmick, such as olive oil or ice cubes. In One-Minute Cooking, only megaphones will be generated.

Dispensers
Some gimmicks cannot be cleared, but instead they produce 1 element every time they are hit with a combo, Café Skill, or megaphone.

Effects on puzzle
Some gimmicks have different effects in the puzzle itself or other icons.
Specialty gimmicks

In Pokémon Café ReMix, every Pokémon has at least three specialty gimmicks, which are the gimmicks they specialize on. When a Pokémon is set as a leader in an order that matches its Category, the player is able to clear these gimmicks more easily by hitting them with combos made with the icons of this Pokémon. Combos that are made by linking other Pokémon icons in the puzzle will not share the same effect. Some Pokémon change their specialty gimmicks depending on the outfit they are wearing. When the player is linking the Pokémon icons, the gimmicks in the puzzle that can be cleared will be highlighted in blue.

Unlocking specialty gimmicks

When the Pokémon is first recruited it will have no specialty gimmicks available, so they cannot be used in a puzzle. The way Pokémon can unlock specialty gimmicks is through leveling up. As they reach certain milestone levels new specialty gimmicks are unlocked or they have their effect upgraded. The specialty gimmicks of a Pokémon can be observed in the summary page of the Pokémon distributed in 3 slots that will be unlocked from left to right. When a specialty gimmick has not yet been unlocked, it will appeared grayed out.

| Lv. 30 | Slot 3 Gimmick | Effect 5 |
The following list is a relation of all specialty gimmicks and the slot on which each Pokémon has it.
Effects

Each specialty gimmick has an effect that determines how many of these gimmicks can be cleared by the Pokémon at once. These effects can be increased up to 4 times as the Pokémon levels up, depending on which slot it occupies. The order of the Pokémon's specialty gimmicks is important because the first one will be upgraded before the second and the third. In that sense, between two Pokémon of the same level that share the same specialty gimmick, the one that has it on the first slot will be more useful than the one that has it on the second or third slots. As of version 6.50, only the specialty gimmick that occupies the first slot can be upgraded to its max potential, since levels above 25 cannot be unlocked in the game.
Hidden gimmick and kitchen notes

Some Pokémon have a fourth, hidden specialty gimmick which is unlocked by using kitchen notes (Japanese:の料理メモ cooking notes). These can be unlocked at any level, but they required a certain amount of kitchen notes for each upgrade. The kitchen notes are shared between different genders of the same Pokémon (i.e. Pikachu and Eevee) as well as between Shiny variants of the same Pokémon. Kitchen notes are usually obtained through limited-time events.
Additionally a special item, the Classic kitchen not, obtained through the Delivery system, can be used with any Pokémon that has a hidden specialty gimmick.
The following table shows the amount of kitchen notes required to level up the hidden specialty gimmick's effects.
| Hidden specialty gimmick upgrade | |
|---|---|
| Effect | Requirement |
| Effect 1 | 1 Kitchen note |
| Effect 2 | 2 Kitchen notes (3 total) |
| Effect 3 | 4 Kitchen notes (7 total) |
| Effect 4 | 8 Kitchen notes (15 total) |
| Effect 5 | 16 Kitchen notes (31 total) |
Outfit Grade 4

By upgrading the Pokémon's outfit to its max level, one of its specialty gimmicks gets a Score boost when they are cleared. This is shown with a
sign above the specialty gimmick. It can also be viewed by tapping on the magnifying glass icon above the Pokémon in its summary screen. One cross means the score bonus is 5% and 2 crosses means the bonus is 10%.

The following list shows which Pokémon receives a Score bonus for each of the gimmicks. Usually, most alternate outfits share the same bonus as the standard form, so they are omitted; only the exceptions are listed.

Availability of gimmicks
Most of the gimmicks were present in the original version of the game (Pokémon Café Mix) so they are present in the Extra Orders, but they were also carried over to the Main Orders, except for the turnip, which was introduced after the major update. Additionally, there's other gimmicks that are only present at event orders.
In Main Orders
The first gimmick that is introduced to the player in Main Orders is the sugar cube, which appears in Order #1. Progressively, more gimmicks are added to the orders, with up to six of them being available per puzzle. Some events have tasks that require clearing a certain amount of gimmicks. Clearing these gimmicks in Main Orders or Expert Café Mode will usually count towards those tasks.
Gimmicks not required for order completion
In the Main orders, Master Café Mode and Training, container gimmicks are usually not required to complete any of the tasks and mainly serve as an obstacle. Regardless, in most cases they need to be cleared anyway because their contents are the ones required for the order's tasks. But, for example, if an olive is cleared and the surrounding icons get covered in olive oil, the player can omit clearing these icons and still complete the order.

Cheese is another gimmick that is not required for tasks, but they usually need to be cleared, or at least some of them, to access the actual required gimmicks. They also may make more difficult the creation of longer links if not cleared.

Choux pastry is not required for tasks either, but it usually serves as an aid to the player to clear other gimmicks more easily, such as those that require multiple hits like Strawberries. It has the strength of a megaphone or skill, so it can also be used to clear gimmicks such as pumpkins.

Parchment paper and dutch ovens can generate megaphones and Skill icons which are beneficial to the player, but they usually come covered in olive oil or ice cubes, which depending on the puzzle, could turn out to be detrimental, so an assessment is needed before clearing these.

Warp funnels are not clearable, but they add a layer of difficulty by transporting icons and gimmicks from one place of the puzzle (where a mouth of a funnel is) to another, usually enclosed area (where the stem of the funnel is) that cannot be reached by skills or megaphones. They are often blocked by other gimmicks.
Piping bags, while not directly required in tasks, need to be hit to produce all the required whipped cream dollops that the tasks ask for. Once they have produced all the whipped cream, they will become inactive.

Gimmicks exclusive to Main Orders
Some gimmicks have not appeared at any One-minute Cooking or Slow Cooking events yet.
| Main order exclusive gimmicks |

Specialty gimmick activation
In Main Orders, it will be shown at the selection screen if any specialty gimmick can be activated, which will be highlighted in yellow. This can only occur if the leader Pokémon matches the order's category. The more gimmicks the leader can activate, the better.

By clicking the Pause button at the upper right corner of the puzzle, the gimmick info section will detail the leader's specialty gimmicks that can be activated (those that do not apply for that particular order will be grayed out). It also indicates the one that has the Outfit grade bonus.

In Daily Training
The following table shows the gimmicks that appear each day of the week for the Daily Training.
In One-Minute Cooking
Unlike other modes, in One-Minute Cooking the specialty gimmicks of all the Pokémon in the team can be activated if they are present in a given cycle, as long as they all match the puzzle's Category.

In Slow Cooking
In Slow Cooking mode, each of the three dishes that are prepared have their own specialty gimmicks. A different Pokémon leader is set for each of the dishes, and only their specialty gimmicks will be activated during each of the puzzles.

Unreleased gimmicks
There are several gimmicks coded in the game that have not been released yet.
