The legendary giants in the anime

The legendary giants[note 1] (Japanese: 巨人伝説(きょじんでんせつ) legendary giants, 伝説(でんせつ)巨人(きょじん) Giants of legend, or 巨人(きょじん)伝説(でんせつ) legendary giants), a term used in Pokémon Sword and Shield, are a group of Legendary Pokémon consisting of Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago. They were previously referred to as a trio before the introductions of Regieleki and Regidrago in The Crown Tundra.

They are also known as the Legendary titans.[1] They were referred to as the Regis in the March 2023 Pokémon GO Newsletter and an April 2023 article on Pokémon.com by a contributing fan writer.[2] They were referred to as the Legendary Rock Pokémon in Pokémon Emerald: Prima's Official Strategy Guide.[3] They have also been called Legendary golems by fans.

Shared design

The giants share very similar names in English. Each has seven dots for eyes, arranged in a different pattern, similar to the braille that is connected to their legend. Unlike the legendary birds and Legendary beasts, the giants do not have Pressure as their Ability, though the original three giants do share the Ability Clear Body. Like them, however, the legendary giants have a leader (and like the beasts, a creator) in Regigigas. Each member requires a puzzle to unlock them in the games they are in.

History

Long ago, the Legendary Pokémon Regigigas created other Pokémon in its own image, using ice, rocks, magma, a cluster of electric energy, and crystallized dragon energy, which would be known as Regice, Regirock, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago. Regieleki and Regidrago are especially powerful among the giants, but both are not in their full power, Regieleki was fitted with special non-conductive equipment to limit its power,[4] and Regidrago was sealed within ancient ruins before it was completed by Regigigas.[5]

All of the giants used to live alongside humans, until they were sealed away out of fear. Regirock was sealed in Hoenn's Desert Ruins, Regice in Hoenn's Island Cave, Registeel in Hoenn's Ancient Tomb, and both Regieleki and Regidrago in Crown Tundra's Split-Decision Ruins.

In the core series games

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire

In the Hoenn Generation III games and the remakes, the player must first unlock the tombs which hold the three giants by solving the puzzle in the Sealed Chamber. Only after doing this will they then be obtainable. Regirock is found in the Desert Ruins on Route 111. To encounter Regirock, the player must walk two steps to the right, two steps down and then use StrengthRSORAS or walk two steps to the left, then two steps down and use Rock SmashE. Regice is found in the Island Cave on Route 105, and to encounter it, the player must wait two minutes in front of the signRSORAS or walk a counterclockwise lap around the walls of the caveE. Registeel is found in the Ancient Tomb on Route 120, and it is necessary to go to the middle of the room and use FlyRSORAS or FlashE to open its cave.

Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl

The original three legendary giants are only obtainable in Pokémon Platinum if the player has a fateful encounter Regigigas in their party and has entered the Hall of Fame. Regirock is present in the Rock Peak Ruins on Route 228, Regice is present in the Iceberg Ruins in Mount Coronet, and Registeel is present in the Iron Ruins on Iron Island. In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Regigigas can be encountered in the basement of Snowpoint Temple if the player has the other three giants in their party. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Regigigas is again obtainable in Snowpoint Temple if the player has the other giants, though said other giants can now be encountered by using Discovery Slates in Ramanas Park's Discovery Room.

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, the original three legendary giants are obtainable in the Underground Ruins. Normally, the door in the Underground Ruins leads to a chamber where none of the giants are found; however, if one of three special keys is activated, the door will instead lead to the chamber of the titan corresponding to that key. The Rock Peak Key for Regirock is obtained immediately after the player enters the Hall of Fame; after catching Regirock, the player will obtain either the Iron Key for RegisteelB2 or the Iceberg Key for RegiceW2. The opposite version's key may be obtained by transferring it with Unova Link from a game that has it, allowing all three giants to be encountered in one game. Regigigas can be encountered in the lowest floor of Twist Mountain if the other three giants are all in the party.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, each of the legendary giants may be encountered in the Ultra Space Wilds by following a yellow Ultra Wormhole to the Cave World during the Ultra Warp Ride. Regigigas only appears here in Pokémon Ultra Moon, though the original three are obtainable in both versions.

Pokémon Sword and Shield

The legendary giants appear in The Crown Tundra in Pokémon Sword and Shield. They reside in ruins dotted about the Crown Tundra, which cannot be entered until Legendary Clue 2 is obtained. The original three each have individual ruins; however, Regieleki and Regidrago share the same ruin, in which the player must select one of the two to obtain. Each ruin's door is closed unless a certain requirement is met, hinted at in writing on the doors. These requirements are: having the first Pokémon in the party hold an Everstone for the Rock Peak Ruins, where Regirock is encountered; having a Cryogonal be the walking Pokémon for the Iceberg Ruins, where Regice is encountered; whistling at the door for the Iron Ruins, where Registeel is encountered; and having Regirock, Regice, and Registeel be in the party for the Split-Decision Ruins, where either Regieleki or Regidrago is encountered. The Split-Decision Ruins may only be entered after the giants of the other three ruins have been caught, even if the three were traded or transferred from another game. Inside each of the ruins, after the pattern on the floor has been lit up by running over it, interacting with the statue will cause the titan to appear; in the case of the Split-Decision Ruins, the player must mark the pattern corresponding to the giant of their choice, and after the giant is encountered, the tiles that were not part of its pattern are permanently dimmed, even if it was defeated or fled from. If Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago are all in the party, a usually dormant Pokémon Den in the Giant's Bed will activate, containing a Max Raid Battle without allies against a Dynamax Regigigas; notably, this Regigigas is level 100.

In spin-off games

Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire

All three members of the legendary giants can be found in the Ruins area on both fields of Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team/Rescue Team DX

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team and their remake, Rescue Team DX, each of them appear in the Buried Relic dungeon on specific floors as bosses, with Regirock on 15F, Regice on 25F, and Registeel on 35F. On defeat, the player will receive the Rock Part, Ice Part, and Steel Part, which not only can be used separately to recruit the giants, but can be combined to create the Music Box, an item which can cause Mew to appear randomly in Buried Relic.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, & Sky

In Explorers of Time, Darkness, & Sky, the Aegis Cave houses all three of the giants as well as Regigigas. The player's team must have the right Unown stones that spell out each typing of the Pokémon (specifically, ICE, ROCK, and STEEL) in order to enter each titan's chamber. If the party does not have these stones, they must enter that titan's cave in order to collect more Unown stones. After beating all three Pokémon, the party immediately heads to Regigigas' Chamber to battle it.

Pokémon Battle Trozei

The legendary giants each appear as bosses in Colossal Forest. Regirock is the boss of Stage 1, Regice is the boss of Stage 2, and Registeel is the boss of Stage 3. Their leader, Regigigas, is the boss of the subsequent stage, Stage 4.

Pokémon Rumble U

In Pokémon Rumble U, all three members can be fought in the A Colossal Throwdown challenge in Melodious Woodland, along with Golurk, Giratina, and their leader, Regigigas.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

After reaching the Silver Rank, players can go to Triangle Temple on the Grass Continent. Like in Red and Blue Rescue Team, each member of the trio acts as a boss for certain floors, with Regirock appearing on B3F, Regice on B6F, Registeel on B9F, and their leader, Regigigas, on B12F. After beating the dungeon, all four Pokémon connect with the player.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, the legendary giants, excluding Regidrago, serve as major objectives in Theia Sky Ruins. Regieleki appears on the top path, while a random member between Regirock, Regice, or Registeel appears on the bottom path. The game rerolls the bottom giant every time one spawns.

Regigigas appears separately, as an objective in Auroma Park and in Mer Stadium. In Mer Stadium, Regigigas only appears during Catch 'Em Battles. In Catch 'Em Battles, the player who defeats Regigigas can temporarily play as Regigigas.

In Panic Parade, the Legendary giants, including Regigigas but excluding Regieleki and Regidrago make prominent appearances. They only appear on Expert and Extreme difficulties, as those are the only difficulties where the waves involving them are present. In Wave 12, which is included in Expert and Extreme, a random member between Regirock, Regice, and Registeel appears as a boss. It is backed up by an Eldegoss. In Wave 15, the final wave of the battle and only used in Extreme difficulty, Regigigas is the boss. When it is at about half of its maximum health, it summons two other Legendary giants (picked randomly between Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, but without picking two of the same giant). Regigigas becomes immune to all damage until both giants are defeated, glowing blue for the duration of this effect.
