A Team Rocket Grunt (Japanese, Generation I: ロケットだんいん Team Rocket Member; II: ロケットだんいんのしたっぱ Team Rocket Underling Member, III: ロケットだんのしたっぱ Team Rocket Underling) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that first debuted in the Generation I games. They are the peons of Team Rocket. Originally, they were males only, but in Generation II, female Team Rocket Grunts started to appear. They also stopped carrying whips. They all dress in the Team Rocket uniforms with giant "R"s on them.
They use a fairly large variety of Pokémon, but often employ Poison-type Pokémon more than others.
In Generation I they were known simply as Rockets, however, afterwards, are known as Rocket Grunts.
Unlike other Trainer classes, Team Rocket Grunts are never given individual names. This has puzzled many fans. However, it may be to prevent the player from becoming sympathetic towards these characters. There are, however, four grunts that appear to be related to each other in Silph Co..
In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the female Rocket Grunt has an appearance similar to that of Cassidy and wears an outfit that looks like Jessie's.
