The Silph Scope (Japanese: シルフスコープ Sylph Scope) is a key item appearing in Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen. It allows the player to identify ghosts.
Locations and uses of the Silph Scope
As the name suggests, the Silph Scope was made by Silph Co., which Team Rocket later invades. The Silph Scope was initially stolen by Team Rocket, and is obtained from the Rocket Hideout after the player defeats Giovanni. It enables the player to identify the formerly unidentifiable ghosts appearing within the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, and is required to pass the stairway that is guarded by the ghost of a Marowak.
In Generation I, the Silph Scope can be stored via PC. If it is done so, the Pokémon within the Pokémon Tower will appear as ghosts once again. The player must have the Silph Scope in their items list in order to identify the ghosts.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga
The Silph Scope first appears in Get Rid Of The Ghost Pokémon!!. Red's rival, Blue, is shown to have one and used it to identify Gengar's movements during its battle with Clefairy. However, Clefairy took the Silph Scope and used it to his advantage to defeat Gengar. Unlike its game counterpart, the Silph Scope is shaped as glasses and it was not shown to come from Silph Co.
In the Pokémon Zensho manga
The Silph Scope was seen in Celadon City. After Satoshi had been scared away from the Pokémon Tower by a Gastly, he saw several Team Rocket Grunts exciting the Tower, using a Silph Scope to avoid being scared by the ghosts. Satoshi then secretly followed the Grunts to the Rocket Hideout, where he snatched one of the Scopes that were in there. Using the Scope, he was able to get past of the ghosts in the Tower and all the way to the top floor, where he encountered Mr. Fuji, who was being held captive by Team Rocket.
- A sign next to the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town advertises the Silph Scope, proclaiming Make the Invisible Plain to See!
- In Generation I, an exploit allows the player to get past the Marowak ghost without using the Silph Scope. By using a Poké Doll to flee the battle, the ghost will disappear as if it had been defeated. This allows the player to skip getting the Silph Scope and in fact skip the Rocket Hideout completely.
- Also in Generation I, by viewing the status screen of a Pokémon, the ghost's sprite will change to that of the actual Pokémon. However, it still cannot be fought or caught.
