A Black Belt (Japanese: カラテおう Karate King), spelled Blackbelt (Japanese: からておう Karate King) in Generations I and II, is a Trainer class that debuted in the Generation I games. They are generally depicted as generic martial artists, in headband and gi striking a fighting pose.

Black Belts are the male counterparts of Battle Girls and Crush Girls. When paired with Crush Girls in Double Battles, they are called Crush Kin.

They specialize in Fighting-type Pokémon. In the Battle Subway, they specialize in Fighting-, Fire-, and Steel-type Pokémon.

A Black Belt in the anime

A Black Belt appeared in Glory Blaze! during Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition. He had teamed up with a Psychic and his Metagross, using a Zangoose by himself. They battled against Ash and Paul, who were using Turtwig and Chimchar. As Chimchar was scared of Zangoose, it was unwilling to battle, but Paul was only thinking about the possibility of getting Chimchar's Ability Blaze activated. When Chimchar defended Turtwig from Zangoose's attack, Paul turned his back to it. Ash then started commanding Chimchar, and with the help of his Turtwig, Zangoose was defeated.

During the tag battle, the Black Belt uses his Zangoose to attack Paul's Chimchar, who is so frightened of it that it is barely able to attack. However, Ash's Turtwig is able to defeat Zangoose with a Razor Leaf-Tackle combo.

Zangoose's known moves are X-Scissor, Crush Claw, and Fire Blast.

A Black Belt appears in Magnificent Meditite & Really Riolu II as the last challenger before Platinum challenges Maylene. He sends out his Machoke for the battle against Chatler. Chatler was able to defeat Machoke, advancing them to Maylene.
