Necrozma can fuse with Solgaleo or Lunala

A Pokémon fusion[1] is a type of form change introduced in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 in which two species of Pokémon are able to combine into a single entity. While all three available species have been described as "fusing" with another species and mechanically function the same, certain appearances of the mechanic appear more similar to parasitic and symbiotic relationships. The fusions of Kyurem and Necrozma take place as the box mascots of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon respectively. All known Pokémon fusions are based on Legendary Pokémon.

Only three Pokémon are able to fuse with another, with each species given a choice of two different species to fuse with. Mechanically, an item is needed to unify the fusion, but during some story telling and biological functions, a species can fuse with another without an item. Kyurem is the only species with a named process of fusion, Absofusion (Japanese: 吸収合体(きゅうしゅうがったい) Absorb Union), in which it is able to fuse with either Reshiram or Zekrom using this process. Necrozma is the only one of which that requires a different item for each fusion.

Being described only as a fusion in-universe, there is also times where human characters can combine themselves with a Pokémon, being described as fusion. These forms have no mechanical purpose and are simply for story telling.[a] Pokémon Sun and Moon also introduced the concept of assembly, a similar but unrelated mechanic related to Zygarde.

Terminology

This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.

The term fuse is first used by N in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.[4]. Descriptions for items such as the DNA Splicers, as well as story dialogue have described Pokémon as having fused in past tense and fuses in present tense. A species that has been fused and taken apart is described as being separated.

Absofusion (Japanese: 吸収合体(きゅうしゅうがったい) Absorb Union) refers to the type of fusion specifically for Kyurem with Reshiram and Zekrom. Absofuse is the future tense of the process.[5] While Absofusion is capitalized like a proper noun, absofuse is not. Kyurem has been described to absorb either Reshiram or Zekrom when commanded to use Absofusion.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Colress describes the whole process as Pokémon fusion.

Kyurem's tendrils used for Absofusion

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2

Reason: full context of Absofusion in B2W2

Kyurem was first able to fuse in Black 2 and White 2 by using the DNA Splicers to fuse with Zekrom or Reshiram to transform into Black Kyurem or White Kyurem respectively.

Kyurem, originally being introduced in Pokémon Black and White, has a prominent role in their sequels. In the original titles it was hypothesized that Reshiram and Zekrom were once the same Pokémon that was eventually split in two, one seeking truths, and the other seeking ideals. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, it is suggested that Kyurem is the remaining husk of a body from which Reshiram and Zekrom came from, leading Kyurem to seek out and fill its body with the truths or ideals to make its body whole again. It is never stated what species of Pokémon that the original dragon that existed before separation is, whether that be Kyurem or another Pokémon altogether.

In Black 2 and White 2, Ghetsis commands Kyurem to use Absofusion against N's ZekromB2/ReshiramW2. Without the needs of the DNA splicers, Kyurem is able to break the ice on its back, revealing the long thin appendages on its back, bending them and aiming the spikes at either Reshiram or Zekrom in order to encapsulate them, returning them to either the Light or Dark Stones, absorbing said stone and giving Kyurem the powers of the species it fused with.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Necrozma was given access to fuse with with Solgaleo using the N-Solarizer to turn into Dusk Mane Necrozma, or with Lunala using the N-Lunarizer to turn into Dawn Wings Necrozma. If either form was holding a Ultranecrozium Z, it could Ultra Burst into Ultra Necrozma. Ultra Necrozma can use the Ultranecrozium Z to use Light That Burns the Sky, a unique Z-Move to the form. Additionally while fused, Necrozma can use the Z-Moves of Solgaleo and Lunala. Necrozma's fusions return in all future titles Necrozma is obtainable in, but its Ultra Burst is not due to lack of the necessary Z-Crystal.

A Necrozma in the main story has accomplished a fusion with Nebby during the climax. After Nebby has evolved into either SolgaleoUS or LunalaUM, Necrozma opens an Ultra Wormhole, planting Guzma and Lusamine onto the altar floor, and engaging in battle with the newly evolved Nebby. Nebby loses this fight and Necrozma grabs hold of it, pinning it to the ground and absorbing its light, fusing itself and taking control of Nebby.

Once fused, Necrozma then battles the player. It loses this fight and flees into another Ultra Wormhole, to finish its task in stealing Alola's light at Ultra Megalopolis. Once the player travels through Ultra Space, they battle Necrozma, who has gone through Ultra Burst, and defeat it, releasing the light it took in back to Alola. Necrozma separates from Nebby and manages to make its way to Mount Lanakila's peak. Here, if the player obtains the Pokémon, they are granted the Ultranecrozium Z for Ultra Burst. Colress, a Pokémon researcher who is currently studying Z-Power, takes note of the obtained species and provides the player with the N-Solarizer and the N-Lunarizer so that they may be able to fuse Necrozma if they have access to a Solgaleo and Lunala. Colress explains that he had worked with the Ultra Recon Squad in creating those machines to help a Necrozma fuse with Solgaleo and Lunala, saying that he has studied Pokémon fusion before (referring to the events in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2).

After the player has become Champion, Lillie will appear with Nebby on Mahalo Trail. She not only provides the player with the Z-Crystal of the Evolution Nebby is in, but allows the player to catch the Pokémon. After doing so, she suggests that Nebby may feel better if it was with Necrozma, allowing it feed off Nebby's light.

Kyurem's Absofusion with Reshiram and Zekrom are also obtainable if the available species and item are in the player's possession. Kyurem's DNA Splicers are obtained at Aether Paradise's Secret Lab A from an Aether Foundation Employee after becoming champion. The employee mentions that Lusamine had wanted to meet the related Pokémon some day.

Pokémon Sword and Shield

Calyrex as Ice Ridder Calyrex
Calyrex as Shadow Ridder Calyrex

Calyrex could fuse with either Spectrier or Glastrier using the Reins of Unity starting with Sword and Shield's The Crown Tundra DLC in the Expansion Pass. Both fusions would return in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet if Calyrex was brought into the title. The DNA Splicers for Kyurem, and Necrozma's N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer will appear at Stow-on-Side's market place if the player owns a Kyurem and Necrozma respectively.

One of the story lines for The Crown Tundra focused entirely on a Calyrex that wished to reunite with its steed. The player is tasked to help Calyrex in growing vegetables, either an Iceroot Carrot or a Shaderoot Carrot. The type of carrot grown at the Old Cemetery will determine the species that appears, if an Iceroot was grown, Glastrier will appear, if a Shaderoot was grown, Spectrier will appear instead. The player is forced to battle with Calyrex's steed, causing the Pokémon to drop its hair. Taking the hair and a Radiant Petal to the mayor of Freezington, they are provided with a new Reins of Unity for Calyrex to take control of its steed.

Calyrex and the player walk their way up to Calyrex's Crown Shrine where it reunites with its steed, using its Reins of Unity on its own. The now fused Calyrex battles the player, where they are able to catch both it and the steed.

Other generations

Generation VI

In Pokémon X and Y, Kyurem's DNA Splicers can be obtained in Kiloude City from a Punk Girl. The player must have a Kyurem in their party and show the Pokémon to the Punk Girl to obtain the item. Kyurem can then fuse with either Reshiram or Zekrom if the player has both species.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after defeating KyogreAS or GroudonOR and if the player has both Reshiram and Zekrom in their party, the player can access the Gnarled Den by soaring in the sky. Both Kyurem and its DNA Splicers are found in this location, allowing them to fuse Kyurem with either the Zekrom or Reshiram they have access to.

Generation IX

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the DNA Splicers, N-Solarizer, N-Lunarizer, and Reins of Unity all appear at Porto Marinada if the player has the respective Pokémon necessary.

Game data and mechanics

Reason: better description on how the mechanics function, move visual descriptions to a better section

When a Pokemon is fused, the base Pokémon changes into a new form, with the host disappearing from the player's boxes and party. The missing Pokémon is however, not deleted or released, but stored within the item used's data. In Generation V and Generation VII, a fused Pokémon in the wild is prevented from being caught, including Necrozma in its Ultra Necrozma form. A Pokémon who can fuse outside these scenarios are always found while separated. Starting with The Crown Tundra, Calyrex could be caught while fused with the chosen steed at the Crown Shrine. Once caught, Calyrex and its steed will share the same Poké Ball that was used to catch the fused Calyrex, but their personality values, nature, and IVs are all rolled individually.

Shininess of either Pokémon is contained when both fused and separated, however, the shininess of the host has no impact on the base Pokémon's appearance. The Pokémon's Shiny coloration in it's base form will carry over when fused, allowing the fusion to have a shiny coloration (I.E. if a Kyurem is shiny, it will remain Shiny as White Kyurem, disregarding if the Reshiram it was fused with was shiny). In Pokémon HOME, the host Pokémon who is shiny may unlock the shiny Pokédex entry of the fusion, even if the base species was never registered a shiny.

A fused Pokémon cannot be released nor can it be traded or transferred to another game. Due to how the item for fusion works, the player can only have one fused Kyurem and one fused Calyrex at a time. The player can fuse up to two Necrozma at a time due to it having two items. Each form provides its own unique cry, combining elements from the main species and its host. Ultra Necrozma's cry is unique from either fusion and its base form.

Among functionality of fusion, each species has its own quirks to how fusion is used, including what moves and Ability is carried over.

Kyurem

Kyurem gets access to not only Reshiram and Zekrom's Abilities, but certain moves as well. Kyurem will learn Fusion Flare if fused with Reshiram, and Fusion Bolt if fused with Zekrom. When separated, Kyurem instead gets access to the move Scary Face. Kyurem's Glaciate is also replaced with two new moves exclusive to the species while fused, Ice Burn when fused with Reshiram, and Freeze Shock when fused with Zekrom. Both sets of moves are acquired through level-up.

Visually, Kyurem takes on several characteristics of the Pokémon that it has fused with, becoming the very definition of a "fusion". While fused Kyurem is no longer hunched forward and its "missing pieces" are filled with either truth or ideals, taking on a sleek, yet muscular build, look while fused with Zekrom and a furry taller look while fused with Reshiram. Its body glows with the energy of the Pokémon, and its long transparent tendrils from its back may extend into its turbine-like tail in overdrive mode.

Necrozma

Unlike Kyurem, Necrozma does not change Ability while fused. Instead, it gains the secondary type of its host instead, Ghost with Lunala or Steel with Solgaleo. Upon fusing, Necrozma will attempt to learn a new move, Sunsteel Strike while fused with Solgaleo, or Moongeist Beam with Lunala. If separated, Necrozma will forget the move, replacing it with Confusion. While fused with either species, Necrozma can use their Z-Moves, upgrading Sunsteel Strike into Searing Sunraze Smash via Solganium Z or Moongeist Beam into Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom via Lunalium Z.

Since Necrozma has two items that allow for the Pokémon to fuse, both fusions can be held at the same time (given that the player has two Necrozma in their possession), but only one for each form. Both forms can be held in a party and used in battle. A fused Necrozma holding an Ultranecrozium Z can Ultra Burst into Ultra Necrozma, further allowing it to upgrade its Photon Geyser into Light That Burns the Sky. Similar to Mega Evolution, only one of these Pokémon can undergo Ultra Burst per a battle.

Unlike Kyurem's relationship with Reshiram and Zekrom, Necrozma acts as prey towards Solgaleo and Lunala, feeding off their infinite light source. Necrozma's body separates and its brain prism attatches itself to the front of its host, allowing its other pieces to attatch as well. This causes the host to become a lighter and monotone in color, as if providing more intense light, not dissimilar to that of Solgaleo's Radiant Sun phase and Lunala's Full Moon phase, without the actions typically needed. According to Dawn Wings Necrozma's Pokédex entry, the Lunala no longer has a will of its own, Necrozma is fully in command of the body given. In some media, it is implied that the host may not mind giving up its body so that Necrozma may survive.

Calyrex

Calyrex has a series of changes unique to its form change. Its secondary type, Grass, will be replaced with either Spectrier's Ghost or Glastrier's Ice. A new Ability is given to the fused form, As One, which mechanically allows Calyrex to use both its typical Unnerve Ability, and the use of Spectrier's Grim Neigh/Glastrier's Chilling Neigh at the same time. Calyrex's level up movepool also drastically changes based on whether or not its fused, gaining several new moves based on the form it takes at level 1. Upon fusion, the player will be asked to teach Calyrex either Glacial Lance with Glastrier, or Astral Barrage with Spectrier. When separated and has no other moves accessible, Calyrex's signature move will be replaced with Confusion.

Calyrex is the most dissimilar to other types of fusion. Instead of merging in a visual sense, Calyrex instead rides atop its steed on horseback. Its came becoems longer signifying its returned power, holding the Reins of Unity in its steeds' mouth. This allows them to use both their powers "as one". While Dynamaxed, Calyrex glows an unusual blue color as opposed to the typical red or hot pink, this blue coloration is retained while fused.

Pokémon GO

Main article: Fusion (GO)

Pokémon fusion was added to Pokémon GO at the launch of GO Fest 2024, having Necrozma being able to be used with Solgaleo and Lunala as a main feature when the Pokémon was released. Among being able to fuse two species, a fused species can be fought in Fusion Raid Battles, where the base form will be obtainable after defeat. Pokémon fusion requires 30 candy from each species involved, as well 1000 Fusion Energy relative to the type of form being created.

Similar to the core series, a fused Pokémon is treated as a form of the base Pokémon, thus the level, stats, shininess and other properties are dependent on the base form and not the host it is fusing with, A fused Pokémon will gain access to a new charged attack, with the first being replaced if base form already had access to two.

In Pokémon Masters EX, N, Lusamine, Leon, Selene, and Elio all use a partner Pokémon that are fused with another. Mechanically, these sync pairs do not allow for the Pokémon to separate; however, certain stories may display the Pokémon fusing, how they fused, or shown separated when necessary.

Ghetsis attempts to fuse his Kyurem with N's Zekrom during the Unova villain arc. This had eventually lead to N fusing his Zekrom with Hilbert's own Kyurem.

Lusamine's Dusk Mane Necrozma can Ultra Burst into Ultra Necrozma upon using its Sync move. Lusamine also takes mention of the Solgaleo that Necrozma had taken the body of.

In Winter Wishes, Leon appears to own an Ice Rider Calyrex.

Elio and Selene both own a Necrozma, Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings respectively.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket

Like its physical counterpart, the TCG Pocket Pokémon fusion cards are considered distinct, counting Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma as unique cards. Moreover, Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, and Ultra Necrozma are all under the Ultra Beast tag.

A Necrozma first debuted in Filling the Light with Darkness!, chasing Nebby and a Lunala through an Ultra Wormhole and making it's way to the Altar of the Sunne. Eventually fusing with Lunala in Full Moon and Many Arms!, despite Tapu Koko and the Ultra Guardians' attempts. After attacks from Team Rocket, Dawn Wings Necrozma had escaped their netting and getting attacked by Nebby instead, separating Necrozma from Lunala and merging with Nebby, fusing into Dusk Mane Necrozma.

Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice

A Kyurem appears in Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice. Unlike others of its species shown in other media, this Kyurem can change form into either Black Kyurem or White Kyurem without the need of the DNA Splicers, or even Reshiram and Zekrom being present.

In the Pokémon Evolutions episode The Eclipse, recalling the events of Ultra Moon, Lillie makes her way up to the Altar of the Moone with Selene. Here, they summon the Legendary Lunala, revealing that Nebby could evolve into it. Before asking to take it to Ultra Space, a Necrozma opens an Ultra Wormhole, dumping a defeated Lusamine and Guzma onto the altar's floor. Nebby takes action and fights Necrozma. After a quick battle, Necrozma defeats Nebby and takes its light, absorbing the Pokémon and changing into Dawn Wings Necrozma. The episode ends as Selene is about to battle Necrozma in its new state.

two forms of Calyrex for the Silver Lance & Jet-Black Spirit Jumbo Pack Set

A mechanic of "fusing" a species of Pokémon is not present in the Trading Card Game. Instead, all forms of Kyurem, Necrozma, and Calyrex are all considered as having distinct names (In example: "Ice Rider Calyrex" and "Shadow Rider Calyrex" are considered distinct cards, meaning one can have four of each in a deck). Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wing Necrozma and Ultra Necrozma cards are considered under the Ultra Beast tag,and thus have not appeared since the Sun & Moon Era of the TCG. Black Kyurem and White Kyurem have made returning appearances since the Black & White Era, including being given mechanics such as Pokémon-GX and Pokémon-ex cards.

Not dissimilar to fusion, the Legend Era introduced Pokémon LEGEND cards, needing two cards to be played. These cards often featured two species, and the artwork was displayed over both cards to complete the illustration. Similarly, the Sword and Shield Era introduced Pokémon V-Union cards, one species is shown across four cards.

Trivia

  • Kyurem is the only one whose fused forms:
    • Do not have different types from its base form after fusing.
    • Don't learn a new move in the standard manner upon fusing, as Glaciate and Scary Face are respectively replaced with Freeze Shock and Fusion Bolt or Ice Burn and Fusion Flare upon fusion.
  • Necrozma's fused forms are the only ones that:
    • Do not have an equal base Attack and Special Attack distribution upon fusion.
    • Have an additional transformation.
    • Have signature Z-Moves, using those of Solgaleo and Lunala.
    • The player can legitimately have both fused forms on a single save file because each of Necrozma's fusions utilizes their own Key Item.
  • Calyrex's fused forms are the only ones that:
    • Can be caught in its fused state.
    • Require a sub-legendary (non-restricted Legendary Pokémon) to fuse with.
    • The list of moves it can learn from TMs, TRs, and tutor moves changes between each fusion and base form.

Notes

  1. There is two cases of a Pokémon being combined with a human being described as a "fusion", both of which originate from Pokémon Sun and Moon. Lusamine fuses herself with the Ultra Beast, Nihilego. This is described to the player by Wicke.[2] Who then compares the situation to Bill, who has combined himself with a Clefairy in Generations I and III, and later a Nidorino in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.[3] In the Kanto-centric Generation I, III and VII titles, Bill only says that he was combined with a Pokémon. Neither Clefairy nor Nidorino have this ability naturally.
