After obtaining the Crown Pass, the player can board a train at Wedgehurst to the Crown Tundra. Upon arriving, the player encounters an enthusiastic man named Peony and his daughter Peonia. Peony wants to take her daughter to an "adven-tour" with him, while Peonia would rather explore the Max Lair. On Peonia's request, the player battles Peony, who reveals himself to be a former Steel Gym Leader. Peonia uses the battle as cover to escape, and after the battle, Peony chases after her into the Max Lair. The player is forced to follow Peony into the Max Lair and take part in a Dynamax Adventure, in which they cannot use their own Pokémon, due the dangerous amount of Galar Particles. After clearing it, Peonia approaches the player and requests they take her place in her father's "adven-tour". Upon hearing of this, Peony is initially distraught, but comes to accept the situation. The player and Peony set up their base at the town of Freezington, with Peony appointing the player as the expedition chief who does the exploring while he holds down the fort.

The first adventure, The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed! (Japanese: 神秘!伝説の王と愛馬のキズナ伝説!! A Mystery! The Legendary Bonds of the Legendary King and Beloved Horses!!), involves the Legendary Pokémon Calyrex, which the townspeople also know as the "King of Bountiful Harvests". Upon restoring the statue of Calyrex in Freezington, the player ends up encountering Calyrex itself. By temporarily taking over Peony's body, Calyrex is able to communicate with the player, explaining that people these days treat it as a fairy tale, and that its powers have diminished notably ever since it was departed from its loyal steed, which is depicted in the statue the player restored. From Freezington's mayor, the player learns that the steed was in love with a certain type of carrot. Depending on the site where the player plants the Carrot Seeds they get, they can either grow a Shaderoot Carrot at the Old Cemetery to cause the Ghost Spectrier to appear, or an Iceroot Carrot at the Snowslide Slope to cause the Ice Glastrier to appear. The steed heads to Freezington and causes a ruckus there, and forces the player into a battle. Calyrex is forced to intervene when the steed attempts to attack the townsfolk, leaving behind a single strand of hair. With the help of Peony, the player is able to sew a replica of the Reins of Unity that Calyrex needs to tame its steed from the strand of the steed's hair and the Radiant Petal received from Calyrex. The player and Calyrex travel to the Crown Shrine, where Calyrex successfully uses the Reins of Unity to tame its steed again and regain its full power. The fused Calyrex then challenges the player to a battle and lets itself be caught by them.

Reporting this capture to Peony concludes the adventure.

In the next adventure, The Terrible Titans... Lurking Locked Away! (Japanese: 発見!開かずの扉と伝説の巨人伝説!! A Discovery! The Unopened Doors and the Legend of the Legendary Titans!!), the player tracks down and catches the Legendary titans Regirock, Regice, and Registeel at the ruins across the Crown Tundra. Once all three have been caught, the player is able to access the Split-Decision Ruins, where they can encounter either Regieleki or Regidrago, depending on the pattern they enter in the ruins, and catch it as well. Reporting these captures to Peony concludes the adventure.

In the next adventure, The Terrible Titans... Lurking Locked Away! (Japanese: 発見!開かずの扉と伝説の巨人伝説!! A Discovery! Reporting these captures to Peony concludes the adventure.

In the third adventure, A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three! (Japanese: 目撃!大樹に集う伝説の鳥伝説!! Witnessed! The Gathered Legendary Birds at the Big Tree!!), the player encounters the Galarians of the Legendary birds at the Dyna Tree Hill, but the sound of the player's Rotom Phone going off alerts them, and they scatter across the region, becoming roaming Pokémon. Articuno roams around the Crown Tundra, Zapdos roams around the Wild Area, and Moltres roams around the Isle of Armor. Catching all of them and reporting the findings to Peony concludes the adventure.

In the third adventure, A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three! (Japanese: 目撃!大樹に集う伝説の鳥伝説!! Witnessed! Catching all of them and reporting the findings to Peony concludes the adventure.

After the player has concluded these three adventures, Peonia appears at the base and informs she's ready to go on an adventure with her father. Peony, out of any legends to explore, tries to tell his daughter that he'll come up with some new legends, which upsets her and causes her to return to the Max Lair, with Peony right on her heels, concluding the main story of The Crown Tundra.

The player then finds an adventure description about Ultra Wormholes that Peony doesn't even recall writing. Showing it to him will make finding and catching Necrozma at the Max Lair the new adventure, calling it They Came From The Ultra Beyond! (Japanese: 伝説!空を覆うウルトラな穴伝説!! A Legend! Ultra Legendary Cave That Covers the Sky!!). Once Necrozma has been caught, the Scientist running the Max Lair reveals that she had written the adventure description.

Once Necrozma has been caught and shown to Peony, the scientist running the Max Lair reveals that she was the one who wrote the adventure description, and the adventure is concluded.

After the fourth adventure has started, Leon will contact the player, informing them of the new Galarian Star Tournament, which they can participate at Wyndon Stadium. In this Multi Battle tournament, the player teams up with either Hop or Marnie and eventually goes on to face and defeat Leon and Raihan or Piers and Raihan, respectively, in the finals. Afterwards, Leon declares the Galarian Star Tournament a permanent new feature of Wyndon Stadium. Following this, the ending credits roll.

The Version 1.3.0 patch was released in conjunction with the launch of The Crown Tundra, allowing players to access these new and returning Pokémon even if they have not purchased the Expansion Pass with the help of trading and Pokémon HOME. However, it is impossible to obtain Ice Rider Calyrex or Shadow Rider Calyrex without purchasing the Expansion Pass, as Pokémon fusions cannot be traded and the necessary combining item is a Key Item.

Legendary Pokémon Dens
Many Legendary Pokémon from the past can be encountered as Dynamax Pokémon and caught while the player is exploring underneath Pokémon Dens during Dynamax Adventures after defeating three Dynamaxed Pokémon. The Legendary Pokémon found at the end of a Den has a 100% Catch rate but can only be captured once, unless the player does not take it.

Players can explore Pokémon Dens to find Legendary Pokémon from previous core series games and fight them in Max Raid Battles using rental Pokémon in a co-op play mode called Dynamax Adventures. To reach the Legendary Pokémon, players must face off against three Dynamaxed Pokémon. The player can choose which way to go after defeating the Dynamaxed Pokémon before reaching the end. Damages such as loss of HP and PP is carried from the previous battle. Occasionally, the players will run into characters or Berries that can be used for healing. Although they can be encountered infinitely many times, only one of each Legendary Pokémon and Ultra Beasts can be caught per game, unless the player refuses to take it. Once the player encounters a Legendary Pokémon or an Ultra Beast, they can select to go to its path. All Pokémon can be caught without fail, but the player can only take one out of the Pokémon Den.
The player can explore the Max Lair to discover and catch Legendary Pokémon in a feature called Dynamax Adventure. The player can team up with either NPCs or other players to take on a series of Max Raid Battles using rental Pokémon or Pokémon caught during the Adventure to make it to the end. After discovering the Legendary Clue? and showing it to Peony, Ultra Beasts will also start appearing in the Max Lair. All Pokémon defeated during a Dynamax Adventure can be caught without fail, but only one Pokémon from each Adventure can be taken out of the Max Lair once the Adventure is over.

Swords of Justice footprints
Swords of Justice footprints
A side quest involves the player finding footprints belonging to the members of the Swords of Justice and reporting these findings to Sonia at Freezington. Each pair of footprints the player finds constitutes 2% of the data required to locate the Pokémon that left them. Once the player has found 50 footprints, 100% of the required data, Sonia can locate the Pokémon, causing it to spawn in a certain area of the Crown Tundra as a wanderer. Catching all these Pokémon and showing them to Sonia also allows the player to encounter and catch the Mythical Pokémon Keldeo at Ballimere Lake.
A side quest involves the player finding footprints belonging to the members of the Swords of Justice. The quest is introduced by Sonia when the player first finds a pair of unusual footprints near the Freeze Inn at Freezington. The player must collect data by tracking these footprints, with each pair of footprints constituting 2% of the data required to locate the Pokémon. The footprints are unique for each member of the Swords of Justice, and more footprints spawn than the required 50. Once the player has found 50 footprints (100% of the required data), Sonia can locate the Pokémon, causing it to spawn in a certain area of the Crown Tundra as a wanderer. Catching all these Pokémon and showing them to Sonia also allows the player to encounter and catch the Mythical Pokémon Keldeo at Ballimere Lake.

Plot

201

After obtaining the Crown Pass, the player can board a train at Wedgehurst to the Crown Tundra. Upon arriving, the player encounters an enthusiastic man named Peony and his daughter Peonia. Peony wants to take his daughter to an "adven-tour" with him, while Peonia would rather explore the Max Lair. On Peonia's request, the player battles Peony, who reveals himself to be a former Steel-type Gym Leader. Peonia uses the battle as cover to escape, and after the battle, Peony chases after her into the Max Lair. The player is forced to follow Peony into the Max Lair and take part in a Dynamax Adventure, in which they cannot use their own Pokémon, due the dangerous amount of Galar particles present within the cave.

Depending on the site where the player plants the Carrot Seeds they get, they can either grow a Shaderoot Carrot at the Old Cemetery to cause the Ghost-type Spectrier to appear, or an Iceroot Carrot at the Snowslide Slope to cause the Ice-type Glastrier to appear.

Legendary birds at the Legendary Tree

In the third adventure, A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three! (Japanese: 目撃!大樹に集う伝説の鳥伝説!! Witnessed! The Gathered Legendary Birds at the Big Tree!!), the player encounters the Galarian Forms of the legendary birds at the Dyna Tree Hill, but the sound of the player's Rotom Phone going off alerts them, and they scatter across the region, becoming roaming Pokémon. Articuno roams around the Crown Tundra, Zapdos roams around the Wild Area, and Moltres roams around the Isle of Armor. Catching all of them and reporting the findings to Peony concludes the adventure.

Once Necrozma has been caught and shown to Peony, the scientist running the Max Lair reveals that she was the one who wrote the adventure description, and the adventure is concluded.

After the fourth adventure has started and The Isle of Armor story has been concluded, Leon will contact the player, informing them of the new Galarian Star Tournament, which they can participate at Wyndon Stadium.

Characters

The characters Peony and Peonia make their appearances.

Pokémon

The Version 1.3.0 patch was released in conjunction with the launch of The Crown Tundra, allowing players to access these new and returning Pokémon even if they have not purchased the Expansion Pass with the help of trading and Pokémon HOME. However, it is impossible to obtain Ice Rider Calyrex or Shadow Rider Calyrex without purchasing the Expansion Pass, as Pokémon fusions cannot be traded and the necessary combining item is a Key Item.

New Pokémon and forms

The Legendary Pokémon Calyrex debuted in The Crown Tundra along with its two forms, Ice Rider Calyrex and Shadow Rider Calyrex. These alternate forms are fusions with the new Legendary Pokémon Glastrier and Spectrier, respectively.

Galarian Slowpoke can be evolved into Galarian Slowking using the Galarica Wreath.

In addition to Calyrex and its steeds, five new Legendary Pokémon were introduced in the Crown Tundra: two new Legendary titans, Regieleki and Regidrago, and regional forms of the legendary birds, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.

Customization

The player can wear exploration gear and new fashion items made available with The Crown Tundra.

Dynamax Adventures

Four players on a Dynamax Adventure
Main article: Dynamax Adventure

Galarian Star Tournament

Main article: Galarian Star Tournament

Once the player has completed The Crown Tundra story, as well as the base game's post-game and The Isle of Armor story, a new feature called the Galarian Star Tournament will be unlocked within Wyndon Stadium. This Multi Battle tournament allows the player to team up with and battle against Trainers encountered in the main game, including all the Gym Leaders.

Swords of Justice footprints
