Zygarde (Japanese: ジガルデ Zygarde) is a dual-type Dragon/Ground Legendary Pokémon.
While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, it has five forms.
Zygarde 50% Forme was introduced in Pokémon X and Y. Its four alternate forms were announced in the October 2015 issue of CoroCoro magazine.
Biology
Zygarde 50% Forme has a serpent-like body with a green and black pattern on it. There are black frills on the back of its head like a frilled lizard. Its eyes comprise four green hexagons like the compound eyes of of an insect. More green hexagons are on the front and back of its frills. The hexagons on its eyes and frills can glow. Its tail is flat and is black on top and green on the bottom. Its tail ends with five separate green tendrils. It is said to monitor the ecosystem, and if the ecosystem falls into disarray, it appears and reveals its power.
Zygarde Complete Forme has a large, humanoid body with a long tail similar to its 50% Forme's body. It has two similar appendages protruding from each of its shoulders. On each of these appendages is a hexagon and an undulating pattern; on its right side, these are colored blue, and on its left side they are colored red. It has multiple white protrusions on its body: three on each hand, one on each knee, and one and the front of its feet. Above its lower abdomen is a large, round section which is either its chest or its head. Upon this, there is a zig-zagging pattern which fades from blue to white to red. Above this pattern are two green marks. Above this round section is a protrusion shaped like a crown, with three white hexagonal marks above four horizontal ones, the uppermost white one having a very thin diamond shape through it. Directly above this mark is a final green hexagon. These hexagons appear similar to jewels within the "crown". Surrounding this is are triangular protrusions connected by another upside-down triangle which is jagged at the top. Zygarde Complete Forme is said to exceed both Xerneas and Yveltal in power, possessing 100% of its total cells. Zygarde only enters Complete Forme when the Zygarde Core believes it is outmatched.

Trivia
Origin
Zygarde 50% Forme's appearance is based on a serpent in the shape of the letter Z. It may also draw inspiration from the sea serpent Jörmungandr and the dragon Níðhöggr. According to the Prose Edda, Jörmungandr is a child of Loki who was tossed into the great ocean that encircles Midgard by Odin. The serpent grew so large that he was able to surround the earth and grasp his own tail. As a result, he received the name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. When Jörmungandr lets go of his tail, the world will end. Níðhöggr is the dragon from the Poetic Edda which resided at the bottom of the world tree Yggdrasill and gnawed at its roots. Níðhöggr is identified as both a dragon and a serpent in the Skáldskaparmál section of the Prose Edda. The patterns spread across Zygarde 50% Forme's body are very similar to ribose and deoxyribose molecules. Its tail's shape is possibly based on base pair codons, the essential building blocks of the DNA double helix.
Its 10% Forme appears to be based on Fenrir, one of the children of Loki. In Norse mythology, Fenrir is a monstrous wolf which was foretold to bring the gods great trouble and harm. Because of this, the gods prepared three fetters to bind him. Only the last of the shackles, Gleipnir, a ribbon-like binding created by dwarfs, could hold him. The green scarf-like object around 10% Forme's neck could be based on Gleipnir, which is said to hold until Ragnarök. 10% Forme's razor sharp teeth may be an allusion to Fenrir biting off the right hand of Týr, who courageously placed it in the wolf's jaws in a false pledge of good faith. This form could also be based on Garmr, the dog of Hel and watchdog that guards Hel's gate. 10% Forme's appearance resembles a Doberman Pinscher.
Its Complete Forme is possibly based on Hel, the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead in Nordic myth. Along with Jörmungandr and Fenrir, Hel is a child of Loki. Most incarnations depict her as a half alive and half dead being, which may have inspired Zygarde's theme of the balance between life and death. Given that both Fenrir and Jörmungandr were fated to die fighting against the gods during Ragnarok, it is possible that the Complete Forme is based on Loki himself, who also fights a god during Ragnarok and is killed. The colors on Complete Forme's chest match the colors of the flag of France. The red and blue markings on either side may represent Yveltal and Xerneas, as this forme exceeds both of their powers.
Zygarde Cell and Zygarde Core are based on cells. Both look similar to flatworms, specifically those in the genus planaria. Their appearances resemble the wide body of the Tsuchinoko. The hexagons on them could represent a cell's membranes.
The order of Zygarde's 10%, 50%, and Complete Forme mirrors how powerful their counterpart is: Fenrir and Jörmungandr being below gods, and Hel or Loki being on equal-footing with the gods.
Name origin
Zygarde comes from the letter Z. It may be derived from ζυγωτός zygōtos (Greek for joined), zygote, and garde (French for guard), and zygōtos and midgard (Old Norse: Miðgarðr).
