Biology
Physiology
Piplup is a light-blue, penguin-like Pokémon, which is covered in thick down to insulate against the cold. It has a dark blue head with a primarily white face and a short, yellow beak. The dark blue feathers on its head extend down its back and around its neck, which causes it to appear to be wearing a cape. There are two white ovals on its chest and a small, light-blue marking resembles a crown above its beak. It has flipper-like arms and yellow feet with three toes each.
Piplup bears semblance to a penguin chick. It has yellow feet and a light-blue body. There are two white spots on its chest that seem to resemble buttons on a suit. It also appears to have a blue cape. It has a circular, blue head with white circles around its eyes and a small, yellow beak. The light blue mark between its eyes above the beak resembles a small crown.

Gender differences
Piplup has a strong sense of self-pride. Because of its pride, it has a hard time accepting food from humans and bonding with its caretakers. It will even puff out its chest after it falls down, which it often does due to its poor walking abilities. However, it is a skilled swimmer that can dive for over ten minutes in order to hunt. It has also been shown to fly short distances in the anime. It lives along the seashore in colder climates. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy.
None.
Special abilities
Piplup mainly know how to use Water attacks such as Bubble, but they can also learn pecking moves.

Behavior
<gallery heights=150 widths=200>
Piplup have a large sense of self-pride. Because of this, a Piplup has a hard time accepting food from humans, and don't like it when someone tries to help them. Piplup is a poor walker, and often falls down. Its pride, however, makes it puff up its chest without a care. It is a skilled swimmer, diving for over ten minutes to hunt. In the anime, it can sometimes fly short distances, despite penguins not being able to fly.

Habitat
Evolution
Piplup live along the sea shore in colder climates. However, Piplup are quite rare and they're usually given out by Professor Rowan to new Pokémon Trainers in the Sinnoh region.
Piplup evolves into Prinplup, which evolves into Empoleon.

Dawn began her journey in Sinnoh with a Dawn. In Following A Maiden's Voyage!, Piplup and the starter Chimchar got into a fight over their food, with Piplup causing chaos by using BubbleBeam on the interior of Professor Rowan's lab in pursuit of Chimchar. The two escape, and Dawn is given the task of finding them. She finds Piplup, and the two narrowly escape an Ariados attack. Back at Rowan's lab, Chimchar having been found by Rowan's Staraptor, Dawn chooses Piplup.
Major appearances
Dawn's Piplup
Piplup debuted in Following A Maiden's Voyage!, where he got into a fight with a Chimchar over their food in Professor Rowan's lab. After ruining the lab, the two escaped, and Dawn was given the task of finding them. She found Piplup, and the two narrowly escaped an Ariados attack. Back at Rowan's lab, Dawn chose Piplup as her first partner Pokémon. Since then, he has been her main Pokémon and has been mostly seen outside of his Poké Ball.

As the Diamond & Pearl continued, Dawn kept Piplup out of its Poké Ball more and more often, much like Ash does with his Pikachu.<!--When did it start staying out of the ball, I don't remember. Someone?-->
Team Poképals
A Piplup, who used to be a human, was one of the two main members of Team Poképals in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness.

Other appearances
Other
Tyler, a rookie Trainer that appears in The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, has a Piplup which appears to be female. He uses her to try capturing a Yanma.
In The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, Tyler used a female Piplup nicknamed Pippy to catch a Yanma. She is different from other Piplup because she wears a tiara.

Another Piplup owned by Rowan appears in SS024.
In DPS01, Professor Rowan presented a Piplup to Shinko as one of the first partner Pokémon for her to pick. It fought with Rowan's Chimchar after it stole its food; this led to a window breaking and Piplup and Chimchar escaping. They were captured by an Ariados's web before being rescued by Shinko and Dawn.

A Piplup, who used to be a human, is also one of the two main members of Team Poképals in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness.
A Piplup appeared in I Choose You!, under the ownership of Verity. It is her main Pokémon.

Minor appearances
In The Sinnoh Iceberg Race!, Lauren's Piplup ran away from Sinnoh after becoming jealous of Lauren's new Croagunk. Eventually, it was returned to her by Ash and Goh after they found it in Vermilion City. Piplup entered itself and Croagunk into the Pokémon Iceberg Race, but the two partnered up to save Lauren after TRT interrupted the race.
Kenny and Barry also both had a Piplup at one point, which evolved into a Kenny and a Barry respectively before their first appearances.

Pokédex entries
Alternate World Dawn's Piplup appeared in flashbacks and photos in The Gates of Warp! and physically in Showdown at the Gates of Warp!.

Minor appearances
In Going for the Gold!, multiple Piplup were living in the Ambrette Town. Seeing these Piplup reminded Ash of Dawn's, since her Piplup was "something else".

In Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad, a Piplup was living in a forest.

A Piplup appeared in Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.

In The Cuteness Quotient!, a Trainer's Piplup competed in the Friendship Festival.

Trivia
Trivia
* Piplup is the only Water-type starter Pokémon that cannot learn Water Gun.
<!--Do NOT add Barry. There are neither rumor or confirmation that Piplup was his starter.-->
** It is, however, also the only Water-type starter Pokémon to learn BubbleBeam via leveling up.
* Piplup shares its category with its evolved form and Eiscue. They are all known as the Penguin Pokémon.
* Piplup is the second starter Pokémon based on a bird, the first being Torchic. Coincidentally, neither evolve into a Flying, as both are based on flightless birds.
* Piplup is the most selected Sinnoh first partner Pokémon in the anime, being the first partner Pokémon of Dawn, Kenny, and Tyler.
** Although Piplup and Torchic are clearly based on birds, they are not in the Flying egg group. They share this trait with Delibird.
* Piplup was designed by Yusuke Ohmura.
*** Coincidentally, Piplup and Delibird are both based on penguins.
* In February 2007, a piece of merchandise at Toy Fair used "Pochama" to refer to this Pokémon, leading some fans to believe that it would be Piplup's English name. However, another item at the same event referred to it as "Piplup".
* Piplup is the most selected Sinnoh starter in the anime. It has been the starter of Dawn, Kenny, and Tyler. <!--Next person to add Barry gets blocked.-->
* Piplup and its evolution family are the only Pokémon that learn Drill Peck that are not part Flying.
** They are also the only ones that were not introduced in Generation I to learn Drill Peck by level up.

Origin
Origin
Piplup is based on a baby penguin or a Blue penguin. However, the light blue crown-shaped marking above its beak may refer to an Emperor Penguin, or a baby Emperor Penguin.
Piplup is likely based on a young penguin, possibly an emperor penguin chick. The light blue crown-shaped marking above its beak may also allude to emperor penguins, or to emperors and kings in general. Piplup's body looks like it is clothed in a tailcoat which is often compared to black and white plumage of penguins.

Name origin
Name origin
Piplup may be derived from "Pip", a stage of growth in baby birds immediately before they hatch from the eggshell, and possibly "plop" or "plup", the sound of hitting the water or 'plip plop', the sound of falling rain in puddles. Pochama may be derived from 坊っちゃま botchama, meaning child, with the P perhaps coming from penguin. It may also be based on ぽちゃぽちゃ pochapocha, which means either splashing in water or having a plump appearance. Alternatively, it may be derived from おぼっちゃま obotchama, a term that refers to children with wealthy parents.
Piplup is derived from plop or plup, the sound of a pebble hitting water. It may also incorporate pip, a stage of growth in baby birds immediately before they hatch from the eggshell.

Pochama is derived from ぽちゃぽちゃ pochapocha (the sound of a pebble splashing in water). It may also incorporate 坊っちゃま botchama (young master).

Piplup (Japanese: ポッチャマ Pochama) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves into Prinplup starting at level 16, which evolves into Empoleon starting at level 36.

Along with Turtwig and Chimchar, Piplup is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Sinnoh available at the beginning of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl.

Biology

Piplup is a light-blue, penguin-like Pokémon, which is covered in thick down to insulate against the cold. It has a dark blue head with a primarily white face and a short, yellow beak. The dark blue feathers on its head extend down its back and around its neck, which causes it to appear to be wearing a cape. There are two white ovals on its chest and a small, light-blue marking resembles a crown above its beak. It has flipper-like arms and yellow feet with three toes each.

Evolution

Piplup evolves into Prinplup, which evolves into Empoleon.

Trophy information

A Penguin Pokémon. It's one of the starter Pokémon received from Professor Rowan when the player departs from the Sinnoh region. It's a Water type, so it's strong versus Rock and Ground-types. It's very cute but filled with pride--it hates to accept food from people. When it levels up, it evolves into Prinplup.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

While Piplup no longer appears from Poké Balls, having been replaced by Oshawott, it makes a cameo appearance in the Kalos Pokémon League stage. When the stage transitions to the Flood Chamber, it can be seen in the background along with Blastoise, Wailord, and Clawitzer.

Trophy information

You wouldn't think it from its adorable exterior, but this Pokémon is very proud and often won't listen to its Trainer. When it walks on land, it waddles and even falls over sometimes, all in a suitably cute way, but once it's in the water you'll see its true potential. It's a skilled swimmer and can dive for over ten minutes at a time to hunt.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Piplup appears as a Spirit.

Trivia

 • Piplup shares its category with its evolved form and Eiscue. They are all known as the Penguin Pokémon.
 • Piplup is the most selected Sinnoh first partner Pokémon in the anime, being the first partner Pokémon of Dawn, Kenny, and Tyler.
 • Piplup was designed by Yusuke Ohmura.[1]
 • In February 2007, a piece of merchandise at Toy Fair used "Pochama" to refer to this Pokémon, leading some fans to believe that it would be Piplup's English name. However, another item at the same event referred to it as "Piplup".[2]

Origin

Piplup is likely based on a young penguin, possibly an emperor penguin chick. The light blue crown-shaped marking above its beak may also allude to emperor penguins, or to emperors and kings in general. Piplup's body looks like it is clothed in a tailcoat which is often compared to black and white plumage of penguins.

Name origin

Piplup is derived from plop or plup, the sound of a pebble hitting water.[3] It may also incorporate pip, a stage of growth in baby birds immediately before they hatch from the eggshell.

Pochama is derived from ぽちゃぽちゃ pochapocha (the sound of a pebble splashing in water).[3] It may also incorporate 坊っちゃま botchama (young master).
