Ren (Japanese: レンジ Renji) is a recurring character in Pokémon Journeys: The Series. He is one of Professor Cerise's assistants.

History

Ren adopting Francois

Pre-series

In There's a New Kid in Town!, it was revealed that Ren had been helping Professor Cerise since he was a student, trying to do research on Yamper. However, Chloe disapproved of this and was always angry with him. Because of that, Ren always tried to research Yamper during times when Chloe was not around.

In the past, Ren met a Magnemite who lived in an old themed restaurant that he frequented, as time went on the restaurant was forced to close. This made Ren decide to adopt the Magnemite, at first Magnemite is reluctant and runs away, Ren then goes in search of the Pokémon and after much searching he finds it next to several lamps that were thrown in the trash.

Ren decides to name the Magnemite "Francois" after the cafe they met on. Subsequently he tries making it as comfortable as possible, starting with an old lamp that Ren had at home and that Francois felt an affinity for.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Ren

Ren debuted in Legend? Go! Friends? Go!, where he attended the opening of Cerise Laboratory. He later saw Professor Oak and Delia off as they returned to Pallet Town. In Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower!, he apologized for being late due to a traffic jam caused by an outbreak of Ivysaur.

In Best Friend...Worst Nightmare!, Ren was the first to be attacked by the Gengar who had been terrorizing the lab.

Character

Ren is skilled despite his unkempt appearance. He appears to be knowledgeable about Pokémon, which was best displayed when he explained the Dratini evolutionary family to Ash and Goh.

He also seems to be afraid of paranormal activities and ghosts, including Gengar. Moreover, he believed Goh's claims regarding Gengar's curse. In How Are You Gonna Keep 'Em Off of the Farm?, it's revealed that he has been uncomfortable with such activities from the time when he was Cerise's student along with Laxton.

In To Train, or Not to Train!, it's revealed that he helps Goh with his school studies.

Ren is seen to be a considerate and dedicated trainer to his Magnemite, going to great lengths to ensure its safety while endangering himself in the process. He is seen to be very patient and accomodating to Francois and its peculiar habits, doing his utmost to make sure it is comfortable.

Pokémon

This listing is of Ren's known Pokémon in the anime:

Francois
Francois
Magnemite, nicknamed Francois (Japanese:フランソワーズ Françoise) was a wild urban Pokémon which loved frequenting an antique-themed cafe as it liked to absorb electricity from antiquities. As Ren frequented the cafe the two grew closer until the cafe closed, after which Ren took after it and gave it its nickname. Although a picky eater, Ren accomodates as much as he can to its tastes. Francois in turn is fond of Ren and shown to be very protective. Although its species is generally genderless, Ren uses both a female name and denominators for it.

Francois helped Ren when the power was cut at the Cerise Laboratory in Best Friend...Worst Nightmare!. After encountering a Gengar inside, Francois alerted Professor Cerise and Chrysa to Ren's location.

Francois reappeared in A Rollicking Roll… with Ren, researching an incident involving a large ball of Gulpin in Vermilion City.

Francois reappeared in Sleuths for Truth!, when Inspector Decker checked all of the Electric-type Pokémon at Cerise Laboratory against an eyewitness drawing of a culprit involved in the theft of electricity.

Francois reapperead in JN093 when a solar flare affected a man-made satellite causing a signal to be emitted on Vermilion City, causing all Magnemite to lose control, with Francois donning a tinfoil hat to block the signal. Things turned disastrous when the rampaging Magnemite started to chase Francois in order to force it to join the group, which inadvertently succeeded when Francois' tinfoil hat was destroyed while defending Ren from attacking Magnemite. Soon all the Magnemite were gathering in a single spot attempting a massive scale evolution into a new organism. Thanks to Pikachu's efforts the Magnemite were distracted while Francois was easily secured due to its eating habits isolating it.

Francois's known moves are Thunder Wave* and Supersonic.
