Spinarak (Japanese: イトマル Itomaru) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves into Ariados starting at level 22.

Biology

Spinarak is a green, arachnoid Pokémon. Its black eyes have white centers, and it has six yellow legs with black stripes. The spots on Spinarak's abdomen resemble a face. Spinarak has a white horn on its head and red mandibles. It is a patient hunter that can stand motionlessly for several days as it waits for unsuspecting prey to be trapped in its web. Spinarak is even said to be able to identify which kind of prey is in its web just by their vibrations. Spinarak lives in forests and makes its nest using thin yet strong silk.

Major appearances

Spinarak first appeared in Spinarak Attack. Officer Jenny in Catallia City use Spinarak (rather than Growlithe) in order to honor the Spinarak which foiled a notorious cat burglar known as The Black Arachnid.

Bugsy's Spinarak debuted in Gettin' The Bugs Out.

Five Spinarak appeared at the Pokémon Jujitsu Academy where their silk was being used as beauty masks in Ariados, Amigos.

One appeared in Abandon Ship! where it shared an antagonistic role with a Swampert.

Another one appeared in The Treasure Is All Mine! belonging to Sebastian.

Trivia

• Spinarak was originally purple in Gold and Silver. This is not the case in Crystal and later generations.
  • However, its original Ken Sugimori artwork is green. Its coloration in Gold and Silver could be attributed to its only appearing at night.
• Spinarak can be seen as a parallel to Ledyba. Both of them are Bug-type Generation II Pokémon. Spinarak is exclusive to Pokémon Gold and HeartGold, while Ledyba is exclusive to Pokémon Silver and SoulSilver. Spinarak are nocturnal, while Ledyba are matutinal. Additionally, their rarity is also reversed, with Spinarak being more common in Pokémon FireRed, and Ledyba in Pokémon LeafGreen. Both were also added to the expanded Safari Zone in Emerald, and both can only be obtained by breeding their evolved forms in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, and White. Additionally, in Black 2 its evolution swarms on Route 22 while Ledyba's evolution does so in White 2.

Origin

Spinarak shares coloring and appearance with the Happy Face Spider, an arachnid from Hawaii that seems to have a face on its abdomen.

Name origin

Spinarak is a combination of spinneret (where a spider excretes silk from) or the verb spin and arachnid. Spinarak is also the Afrikaans word for spider web.

Itomaru may be a combination of 糸 ito (thread) and 丸 maru (circle) or a shortening of 巻き上がる makiagaru (to roll up).
