Pokémon Yellow would later update the front sprites once more, this time explicitly basing them after the Pokémon's appearance in the animated series. In this game, the bulk of the issues stems from the List of Pokémon by color palette, which namely caused Rattata, Shellder, Cloyster, Starmie, Ditto, Porygon, Dratini, Mewtwo, and Mew to be visibly miscolored. | ||
In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the sprites for the Kanto Pokémon are mainly based on contemporary Red and Blue artwork, with some of the new elements tentatively introduced there (like Nidoqueen's fangs) making a return. Much like with Yellow, Pokémon Crystal later changed a good handful of sprites, taking a Pokémon's respective artwork as a basis. This namely affected the Johto Pokémon, and this time around the back sprites were also updated here and there. | |||
Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is likely when the artwork was starting to be drawn before the sprites, leaving most of the inconsistencies to changed colors or somewhat off-model sprites. However, many of the Generation I and II Pokémon were either copied directly from Crystal, or based on Red and Green or Red and Blue artwork, as those Pokémon had yet to be redrawn for FireRed and LeafGreen. | |||

The Red and Blue sprite has symmetrical pincers, instead of only having a single large one. Throughout the franchise, the design of some Pokémon received various amounts of changes. Some were temporary, only lasting for one or two games, while others remained for a fair bit longer, causing a disconnect between the video games and other Pokémon-related media.
Overview
The first few generations are interesting due to the sprites having been made before the artwork, rendering the "errors" and other oddities as nothing more than design revisions.[1]
Generation I, for instance, had the original designs tweaked in some places, with Pokémon Blue giving the original roster new sprites, though the back sprites were consistently left untouched. Pokémon Yellow would later update the front sprites once more, this time explicitly basing them after the Pokémon's appearance in the animated series. In this game, the bulk of the issues stems from the updated palettes, which namely caused Rattata, Shellder, Cloyster, Starmie, Ditto, Porygon, Dratini, Mewtwo, and Mew to be visibly miscolored.
List of sprite discrepancies
Generation I
Pokémon | Game | Reason | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
001 | Bulbasaur | Generation I core series | Originally had round ears instead of triangular ones. The Red and Blue sprite has missing claws. | |
002 | Ivysaur | Generation I core series | Originally had round ears instead of triangular ones, while it had two leaves instead of four. This stayed the case until Generation III. The Red and Blue sprite also depicts Ivysaur as bipedal, something which was never seen again. | |
003 | Venusaur | Generation I core series | Originally had round ears instead of triangular ones, while the Red and Green sprite shows a rather different flower design when it comes to the petals and stalk shape, all the while having only two leaves instead of four. Petal-wise, it started off only having five, which stayed the case until Generation IV. | |
004 | Charmander | Generation I core series | Originally had a dorsal ridge, as depicted in the Pocket Monsters Carddass Trading Cards and early Charmander artwork. | |
005 | Charmeleon | Generation I core series | Originally had a horn instead of a head protrusion. | |
007 | Squirtle | Generation I core series Pokémon Pinball |
Originally had cheek patterns, much like Wartortle. Pinball's animated sprite has Wartortle's plastron design. | |
009 | Blastoise | Generation I core series | Originally had a different cannon cover design, which stayed until Generation IV. | |

012 | Butterfree | Generation I core series | Originally had differently-shaped wings. | |
014 | Kakuna | Generation I core series | Originally lacked pupils of any kind. The Red and Blue sprite has two pincers, not unlike Beedrill's, as depicted in the Pocket Monsters Carddass Trading Cards. | |
016 | Pidgey | Pokémon Pinball | Pinball has much longer eyebrows, as seen in Pidgey's Blue artwork. | |
019 | Rattata | Generation I core series | Originally had a white tail. | |
020 | Raticate | Generation I core series | Originally had more than three fingers. | |
022 | Fearow | Generation I core series | Originally had three talons instead of four. | |
024 | Arbok | Generation I core series | Both front sprites have the white and dark parts of the hood markings reversed. Back sprite originally had wave-shaped markings. | |

026 | Raichu | Generation I core series | Ear design is slightly different, as seen in the back sprite. | |
029 | Nidoran♀ | Generation I core series Pokémon Pinball |

030 | Nidorina | Generation I core series | Originally had a line running though the inside of its ears, not unlike Nidoqueen. Back sprite lacks spikes altogether. | |
031 | Nidoqueen | Generation I core series | Back sprite has inconsistent spike placement. | |
033 | Nidorino | Generation I core series | Originally had a tail, as well as a line running through the inside of its ears, not unlike Nidoking. Back sprite has very unrefined ears and dorsal ridge. | |
034 | Nidoking | Generation I core series | Back sprite has inconsistent spike placement. | |
035 | Clefairy | Generation I core series | Originally had pawpads. Back sprite is missing a wing. | |
036 | Clefable | Generation I core series | Back sprite has a different ear design. The Red and Blue sprite has cheek patterns. | |
