Biology
Physiology
As first revealed Japan's CoroCoro Magazine, Giratina has two forms. The first ("Another Forme") is the form seen in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Versions. In this form, Giratina is a large, gray, centipede-like creature with six short legs. Its legs have golden claws and a gold band on them. It has a tail and a thick black stripe running vertically along the front of its body. There is a series of red horizontal stripes running across the large black one. Three golden half-rings circle the back half of Giratina's neck at the same points that three of the red stripes are at on its front, resembling a ribcage. On its back are two large, black wings that are decorated with red, conical objects. The wings seem oddly out of place, due to the fact that Giratina seems far too heavy to fly effectively. Giratina's head and eyes resemble those of Dialga and Palkia, making many have a theory that it is related to the two. Giratina's shiny form is almost a perfect negative of the original.
The second is a new "Origin Form" which will debut in Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin; it uses this form when traveling through different dimensions. This form is more serpentine than Giratina's regular form. The Origin Form of Giratina has six black streamers on its back that each have a red spike at the end. Giratina's legs have been reduced to looking like spikes. There are four more golden spikes near the edge of the tail. This version of Giratina will make an in-game appearance in the upcoming Pokémon Platinum.
Gender differences
Giratina is genderless.
Special abilities
As to be expected with other Ghost-type Pokémon, Giratina is capable of using Ghost, Dark, Psychic and Electrical attacks. Unlike other Dragon Pokémon, Giratina lacks the ability to wield Ice- and Fire-type attacks (save for Will-O-Wisp). Giratina is one out of seven Pokémon that is capable using Aura Sphere. Since Giratina is a "true" Dragon Pokémon, it is also capable of using Draco Meteor.
Giratina is the only known Pokémon that learns Shadow Force.
Behavior
Habitat
Giratina is a very rare (one-of-a-kind) Pokémon due to its "legendary" status. Legends claim that Giratina shows up at cemeteries and that this Pokémon supposedly lives in the spirit world, on the reverse side of this one.

Trivia
- Giratina is the only dual-type Pokémon that has weaknesses to both of its own types, as well as the first Ghost-type legendary Pokémon.
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Giratina.
- Giratina is one of very few non-Flying-type Pokémon that is able to learn Fly. The others are:
- Giratina is speculated to be the third counterpart of Dialga and Palkia, in part due to the fact that the three are secondary Dragon-types, have the same move patterns as well as the same level on which they learn their respective signature moves, and are version mascots much like the weather trio of Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza.
- It is interesting to note that in addition to appearing to be a member of the dragon trio, Giratina also shares qualities with the lake trio, as it is found in a cave near Sendoff Spring, also known as the "fourth lake of Sinnoh," with the lake trio also being located in caves near (or in their case, on) lakes.
- It is one of six Pokémon which can change into forms specific to itself, the other five being Castform, Deoxys, Cherrim, Burmy, and Arceus. Like Deoxys's other forms were not available in the original two versions of its generation, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but later became available in the rest of Generation III, Giratina's Origin Form will be available in Pokémon Platinum.
- The Another Form is shorter and heavier than the Origin Form.[1]
- In Diamond and Pearl, Giratina is met at level 70, while in Platinum, Giratina is met at level 47, the same as Dialga and Palkia.
- Giratina is the only version mascot to share one of its types with those of all other versions in its generation. It is also the first version mascot that does not appear in the regional Pokédex of the region in which its game takes place.
- When CoroCoro revealed Giratina's two forms, they were spelled "Origine Forme" and "Another Forme," the E's on the ends of the words being reminiscent of Middle English. On the official website for Pokémon Platinum, the Origin Form is spelled as "Origin Forme," with the E on Origin dropped but the one on Form kept. It is currently unknown how these spellings will be treated when translated into English.
Origin
Giratina is possibly based on a basilisk.
Name origin
Giratina's name may be derived from either guillotine, girasol, giraffe, platinum (written as platina in katakana) or any combination of the four.
