Carvanha (Japanese: キバニア Kibanha) is a dual-type Water/Dark Pokémon.

It evolves into Sharpedo starting at level 30.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Carvanha has a round body covered in tiny, sharp denticles which create hydrodynamic advantages by reducing turbulence when swimming, as well as providing protection against physical attacks. The top half of Carvanha's roughly spherical body is blue, while the bottom half is red, with a yellow star-shaped marking below its mouth. Carvanha has two yellow dorsal fins above its eyes that resemble shark fins, and a matching pelvic fin on its belly. Its pectoral fins are also yellow. The caudal fin is composed of two red spines with a thin yellow membrane stretched between them.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Carvanha have jaws that are powerful enough to tear through a boat hull. Its aforementioned Rough Skin causes contact that feels like getting scrapped by sandpaper. Carvanha is also an exceptionally fast swimmer. It is also capable of using Special-based moves like Surf, Dark Pulse, Ice Beam, and AncientPower; however, Carvanha doesn't excel at those abilities.

Behavior

This Pokémon is a pack hunter. Swarms of this Pokémon will attack virtually anything in the water with unmatched ferocity. Without the strength of numbers, however, this Pokémon becomes cowardly and shy.

Habitat

This Pokémon lives in warm rivers with other Carvanha and where food is plentiful.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Carvanha will eat practically any creature that they can sink their teeth into.

In the anime

Carvanha in the anime

Carvanha first appeared in A Corphish Out of Water. When Ash had to take his sick Corphish to a Pokémon Center, he had to cross a river that was infested with Carvanha.

Over the series, Carvanha was one of the Pokémon used by Team Aqua.

A Carvanha appeared in Up Close and Personable!.

Trivia

  • Carvanha, along with its evolution, Sharpedo, cannot learn any Water-type moves through level-up other than Aqua Jet.
    • In Generation III, they cannot learn any Water-type moves through level up at all.
  • In a demo of Ruby and Sapphire at Pokémon Festa 2002 in Japan, players started with a level 12 Sharpedo, suggesting Carvanha wasn't related to Sharpedo by evolution, it evolved at a lower level or by other means (such as an evolutionary stone or trading), or that Carvanha didn't initially exist.

Origin

Carvanha is mostly based on piranhas.

Name origin

Carvanha's name comes from the words carve, or possibly carnivorous, and piranha.

Kibanha may be derived from 牙 kiba, fang, and piranha.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Kanivanha From Karnivore and piranha.
French Carvanha
Korean 샤프니아 Sharpnia From the English sharp and piranha.
Chinese (Taiwan) 利牙魚 Lì Yá Yú Literally "Sharp-teethed fish".
