Plot
Ash reunites with Sinnoh Champion Cynthia, who invites the group to travel with her to East Unova. At Undella Town, they discover Dawn staying at Cynthia's villa, leading to a reunion between Ash and his former traveling companion. The mythical Pokémon Meloetta begins following the group and officially joins them on their journey.
Cynthia announces the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup in Lacunosa Town, a tournament where the winner earns the right to challenge Unova Champion Alder. Ash, Iris, Cilan, Dawn, Trip, and other rivals participate in the competition. During this period, Iris catches a Dragonite, though it initially refuses to obey her. The tournament concludes with Trip defeating Ash in the finals, though Trip subsequently loses to Alder. After the tournament, Dawn departs for Johto to compete in the Wallace Cup.
Team Rocket launches Operation Tempest, their most ambitious plan yet orchestrated by Giovanni himself. They successfully capture Meloetta and use its song to unseal the Reveal Glass at the Abyssal Ruins, summoning and controlling the forces of nature in their Therian Formes. Ash and his friends, with unexpected help from the Team Rocket trio, manage to free Meloetta and calm the forces of nature. Following this failure, Giovanni withdraws all Team Rocket operations from Unova and returns to Kanto.
The group visits the Village of Dragons and Opelucid City, where Iris battles Drayden and learns he is considering her as his successor for the Opelucid Gym. They then travel to Vertress City for the Vertress Conference, where Ash competes using only his current team. Some of the highlights include Ash's Krokorok evolving into Krookodile, Cameron's Riolu evolving into Lucario during his battle with Ash, and Ash placing in the Top 8 after losing to Cameron in the quarterfinals. Virgil ultimately wins the tournament, defeating Cameron in the semifinals and Dino in the finals.
