Heatran (Japanese: ヒードラン Heatran) is a dual-type Fire/Steel legendary Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Heatran is a tortoise-like creature (which might also be based on a ram) with a reddish-brown body that has orange and gray spots. Heatran has metal bangles locked on its legs and the four claws on each of its feet are in a cross formation. Heatran has a gray underside, its face is covered by an iron mask and has red-orange eyes. Whenever it is seen with its mouth open, an orange glow emanates from inside it. Because of its intense body heat, certain parts of its body are melted slightly out of shape.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Heatran can use its cross-shaped claws to dig deep into walls. Their feet allow them to stick to a surface, allowing it to hang and climb from walls or ceilings. Boiling blood, like magma, circulates through its body.
Heatran mainly attacks by using Fire-type attacks such as Flamethrower and Fire Fang, but it also knows a couple of Steel-type moves like Iron Head and Flash Cannon. Heatran can use some Rock and Ground-type attacks, such as AncientPower, Stone Edge, Earth Power and Earthquake.
Heatran is the only known Pokémon that learns Magma Storm.
Behavior
Heatran are fierce guardians. It is noted that without the power of the Magma Stone, Heatran would rampage and cause Stark Mountain to erupt. Heatran also tend to walk on walls.
Habitat
Heatran live within volcano craters, most notably in Stark Mountain and Giant Volcano. Heatran also like to cool off in Reversal Mountain in Unova.

Trivia
- Heatran is the first, and so far only, legendary Pokémon that can either be male or female.
- Heatran and Manaphy have the lowest Egg cycles of all legendary Pokémon, with only 11 cycles.
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Heatran.
- Heatran has the most double resistances of all Pokémon with five: Steel-type, Bug-type, Grass-type, Ice-type, and Fairy-type.
- Heatran is the only Pokémon to take less than normal damage from both Dragon- and Fire-type moves, and that only occurs because of its Ability, which gives immunity to Fire-type moves.
- Because of this, the only Pokémon with STAB on both Dragon and Fire-type moves will bypass Heatran's Fire-type immunity with its special Ability.
- If Heatran faints in a battle when the player is trying to catch it in Platinum, it will appear again in Stark Mountain in one week.
- If Heatran is put to sleep in Pokémon Battle Revolution and Pokémon Black and White, its eyes will remain open. It shares this trait with Darkrai.
Origin
Heatran is most likely based on volcanic remains. Its Steel type references how the Earth's inner core is made of solid metal under immense pressure. It may also be based on a turtle, as the Pokémon Platinum Pokédex entry states that it is melted in parts because of its own heat and in the artwork, bits of metal, which may possibly be a melted shell, can be seen on its body.
Name origin
Heatran may be a combination of heat and transfer. Tran may also derive from transition metal, referring to its Steel-type (note that steel itself is not a transition metal, but an alloy of one).
