Effect

When used from the Bag in a wild encounter, it attempts to catch the wild Pokémon. It has an increased catch rate modifier in certain encounters.

The Dive Ball cannot be used in situations in which Poké Balls cannot be used, such as in wild battles with two or more opponents currently present or against a trial Pokémon. If used in a Trainer battle (except if used as a Snag Ball on a Shadow Pokémon), the opposing Trainer will deflect the ball, wasting the item. If used on the ghost Marowak, it will dodge the ball, wasting it.

Generation III

In A Frenzied Factory Fiasco!, multiple Dive Balls were seen at the Poké Ball Factory.

In We Know Where You're Going, Eevee!, Lana caught her Eevee, Sandy, in a Dive Ball.

In Splash, Dash, and Smash for the Crown!, a Dive Ball appeared as a part of James's Poké Ball collection.

In Mad About Blue!, Gorman was shown to keep his Nidorina and Phanpy in Dive Balls.

A Dive Ball first appeared in A Sketchy Smattering of Smeargle while Emerald was thinking which of his Poké Balls he should use to catch Jirachi.

Dive Ball was introduced as an Item card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English XY Series (the Japanese XY Era). It debuted in English in the Primal Clash expansion, with artwork by Toyste Beach. In Japan, it debuted in the Tidal Storm expansion. It allows the player to search their deck for a Water-type Pokémon and put it into their hand.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, a Sailor in the Mossdeep City Poké Mart mentions that Dive Balls and Net Balls are only made in Mossdeep. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Sailor instead mentions that they used to be Mossdeep's specialties.
  • In Pokémon Colosseum and XD, Phenac Stadium is considered an underwater location, so the Dive Ball has an increased catch rate in that location. Because Dive Balls are not normally available in those games, and trading is only unlocked during the postgame, the player cannot have Dive Balls in their possession until the postgame. The only catchable Shadow Pokémon that can appear in Phenac Stadium during the postgame are the Shadow Pokémon in the Card e Room, which is exclusive to the Japanese version of Colosseum and only accessible after scanning an appropriate e-Reader card; thus, these are the only Pokémon in either game for which the Dive Ball's increased catch rate can apply.
