Dratini (Japanese: ミニリュウ Miniryu) is a Dragon-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Dragonair starting at level 30, which evolves into Dragonite starting at level 55.

Biology

Physiology

Dratini are serpentine Pokémon that inhabit lakes and rivers. They possess white fins on the sides of their heads as well as a large, round silver nose on their face. They also have purple-colored eyes and a small, white circular feature on their head. Dratini are constantly growing, and can become quite long. As they grow, they shed their delicate deep blue skin. Dratini also seem to have a much stockier body than their evolved form.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

As a Dragon-type Pokémon, Dratini can use Dragon-type moves such as Dragon Rage and Twister. They are also capable of using Water, Electric, Ice, and Fire-type moves. Some examples are Surf, Thunder, Ice Beam, and Flamethrower.

Behavior

Dratini are timid, elusive, and extremely shy Pokémon, and thus are rarely seen, resulting in the belief that they are mythological among certain communities in Kanto.

Habitat

Dratini are said to be nonexistent or one-of-a-kind Pokémon, as they are so rare. However, they are found in several places, including the Kanto Safari Zone, Dragon's Den, Mt. Coronet, and Dragonspiral Tower.

Major appearances

Clair's Dratini

Dratini's first dub appearance was in Beauty is Skin Deep. This Dratini belonged to Clair and Team Rocket wanted to steal it from her. Clair's Dratini evolved into a Dragonair at the end of the episode.

Other

Dratini first appeared in EP035. The Warden of the Safari Zone was protecting the Dragon Pokémon. The episode was banned from English-audiences due to excessive use of a firearm.

Minor appearances

A Dratini appeared in one of Team Rocket's fantasies in Ditto's Mysterious Mansion.

Another Dratini appeared in Snorlax Snowmen.

Trivia

  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Dratini was originally known as "Dragoon". Although this word can mean a European military unit that is transported on horseback but fights on foot, the name was probably selected as a combination of dragon and lagoon.
  • Dratini is the first Dragon-type Pokémon by National Pokédex order. Its evolutionary family comprise the only Dragon types in Generation I.
  • Dratini and its evolutions share the same species name with Horsea and its evolutions, and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.
  • Dratini's sprite in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green featured it with a striped stomach which was removed for Pokémon Yellow and all following games.
  • Dratini is the only Pokémon not related to a Water type by evolution that is capable of learning Aqua Jet.
    • As a result, Dratini, its evolutions and Masquerain are the only Pokémon that do not gain STAB from it.
  • Dratini is the lightest Dragon-type Pokémon.

Origin

It appears to be based upon sea serpents or ryu, traditional Japanese dragons or Chinese dragons who bring good luck. Its constant growth is similar to that of Jörmungandr, a serpent in Norse mythology. Its reclusive nature and the fact that for a long time it was considered a myth is reminiscent of the loch ness monster.

Name origin

Dratini is a combination of dragon and a corruption of tiny; tini-tiny is a phrase to indicate smallness. Ini is also an Italian suffix, applied to a word to imply endearment or smallness. Despite this, it is fairly large for a Pokémon, being nearly six feet (1.8 meters) in length.

Miniryu a combination of miniature and 竜 ryū (dragon).
