Grumpig (Japanese: ブーピッグ Boopig) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves from Spoink starting at level 32.
Biology
Physiology
Grumpig is a Pokémon based upon a pig that is bipedal. The lower half of its body is black, while the upper half is purple. There is also black on its ears and arms, while its hands and feet are purple. There appear to be three shining black pearls on its body, two on its head and another on its mid-section where the black half meets the purple. These pearls are related to Grumpig's strong psychic powers. Its large ears are useful for hearing and properly directing the sound to the inner ear. It also has a pink snout on its face, along with human-like oval-shaped eyes and a mouth. One of its most notable features is its long and curly pink tail, that may have been what was used to bounce in its previous form, Spoink. It is unknown whether Grumpig is able to use the spring-like tail to its advantage aside from using the move Bounce.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Like Spoink's, the pearls on Grumpig's body give it the ability to execute powerful Psychic attacks. An interesting ability of Grumpig's is being able to perform unusual dance steps to hypnotize its opponents; this is most likely since while performing Psychic-type moves while harnessing the energy of the pearls, it will automatically move in this odd way.
Behavior
As previously stated, Grumpig are known to perform odd dance steps. Interestingly, this dance has become popular among many humans. Much of Grumpig's behavior involves hypnotism and psychic power, which is most likely why it is known as the Manipulate Pokémon.

In the manga
In VS. Grumpig I of the Ruby & Sapphire arc, a herd of wild Grumpig attacked Ruby and Sapphire, only to be promptly defeated by the former's Mightyena, Nana. This would turn out to be a critical development in the manga's plot, as it is through this that Sapphire grows aware of Ruby's real strength.

Trivia
- Despite its Pokédex entries mentioning it performing odd dance steps, it cannot learn Teeter Dance.
- The Pokédex entry in the manga of Pokémon Adventures misidentified Grumpig as a Puppet Pokémon.
Origin
It is possible the inspiration for Grumpig came from the biblical phrase "do not cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under your feet." The pearls were supposed to represent wisdom given to an audience who wouldn't appreciate the teachings. Grumpig and Spoink appear to instead use those pearls of wisdom to enhance their mental powers. It is also quite obviously based on a pig.
Name origin
Grumpig's name is likely just a combination of grump and pig. The grump may also act as a corruption of the word grunt, a sound that pigs make.
Boopig is probably derived from ブーブー būbū, grumbling or oinking, or 豚 buta, pig, and the English word pig.
In other languages
- German: Groink - Probably a combination of grumbling and oink, the sound pigs make.
- French: Groret - From grognement (grunting), and goret (piglet).
- Korean: 피그킹 Pigking
- Chinese (Taiwan): 噗噗豬 Pū Pū Zhū - 噗 may come from the "Boo" in its Japanese name. Literally "Puffing pig".
