Hello, I've been having a problem getting the Zelda wiki to load on my smart phone, all I do is type the Zelda wiki url in the url bar or click the link you have for it at the bottom of the page, sometimes it works fine other times it just sits there for a bit and then the screen turns white and this following text appears on the screen:

That is all That is shown when I try to access the Zelda wiki, I have no viruses on my smartphone (I know because I constantly scan for viruses and use AVG as my virus scanner), this has only been happening since I cleared the cache, but again sometimes it works just like it's supposed to so I don't think the cache is the problem, anyways I wanted to let you know about it so you can help me figure out the problem and let the Zelda wiki people know. I will also be posting this same thing to the Zelda wiki once I can get on it again. So please help me out, thank you for your time and I shall be awaiting responses.

Problems with main page

I've been having a few issues with the main page. I can't click on the 'discussion', 'view source', 'history' or 'watch' buttons. Those buttons work on most other pages, so as far as I know, it's just this page. Also, these errors only occurred after the update. Cacnea7642 16:00, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Everything seems to be working fine on my end. Does anyone else seem to be having this problem? --Pokemaster97 16:30, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Are you using Google Chrome? Because I am having the same issue with Chrome but it seems to be working fine in other browsers, which is very weird since I never had such problem with Chrome in the past. ♫♪ エイディニズ ♪♫ 17:39, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Firefox won't let me click on any of the main page tabs other than article. --Charlie (talk) 17:50, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
After a bit of investigation, I think I've found and fixed the problem. Because of where the fixes were (i.e. not on the page itself but other pages that this depends on) it may take some time for the fix to actually take effect on your end. If it's still not working after giving it a day clearing your cache, let me know. Werdnae (talk) 23:44, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

At the end of the page, where the boxes appear (Enciclopediae Pokémonis and Nintendo Independent wikis), the reference to Bulbapedia is a redirect. As far as I know, it's a little stupid to have a link leading us to the same page! TheOriginalOne 10:40, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't see what you mean TheOriginalOne. That link to Bulbapedia is linking to the home page of our site, if it didn't link to the mainpage (where we already are) then what would it link to? --Pokemaster97 16:10, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't make sense to have a page linking to itself, so I think we should put the word "Bulbapedia" in bold, without linking to anything; the bold sign would indicate the users that they're already on the page. TheOriginalOne 14:54, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Just curious;

On the main page, it states that Bulbapedia is supported by Bulbanews, Bulbagarden Archives, and Bulbagarden Forums. Shouldn't that mean it's supported by the National Bulbagraphic, too? I have a question...

Okay, so lately, with the release of Black and White 2, Bulbapedia has put news from it on the front page. Just out of curiosity, are they going to go back to putting articles daily on the front page? JacobtheDoduo (talk) 20:37, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

It's been pretty much decided that we're going to stick with just leaving the news feed up. It was very time consuming to replace the featured articles every day and we felt that this was easier. --Pokemaster97 20:45, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm thinking that National Bulbagraphic is probably not going to come back, but as for if it should be moved to the archives, that is a question that someone like MAGNEDETH or darklordtrom could easily answer. (Charizard101 (talk) 14:04, 14 October 2012 (UTC))

If possible, you should be able to see the images by switching to another computer. I am not sure if going to the Archives page for each image would help the issue, but it would if the cache is cleared before hand. Super goku (talk) 19:16, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for doubting you, but it seems that there is an issue somewhere. It seems that the .png files are not displaying correctly on some browsers. I would suggest using a browser that can display .png files that are animated for the time being. Super goku (talk) 19:55, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
It's not a browser thing. They're no longer working for me, now that I'm using a different internet connection but the same browser. We'll look into it, but it's possible that it's due to certain internet connections not directing traffic properly after the move. It may not be a quick fix. Werdnae (talk) 19:59, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
So much for my guess. At least the images are still viewable on the Archives. Super goku (talk) 20:09, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Related to that, and as an added note, given that some images seem to be working some of the time: If an image isn't loading and you want to see it, click on it, and then click on the "description page" link to it on the archives. Please, please, please, don't sit there refreshing the page or continually trying to reload the image. Doing that is not going to make it load. What it will do is increase the load on our servers, making it so that less loads. It makes any problem worse. Werdnae (talk) 21:48, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
That just gives 404 not found _Volcronaperson_ 23:27, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
In extreme cases, it gives out a 503 error. (Loss of server.) Back on topic, what was the problem with some of the images? --Super goku (talk) 07:53, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
What I meant, was not navigate to the image itself, but navigate to the image on the archives. And the problem was that the main server had crashed, blocking all traffic. Werdnae (talk) 08:04, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
How come the archives access their images from the archives, while Bulbapedia accesses images from cdn2.bulbagarden? Abcboy (talk) 10:57, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
Because wikis are set up to only access images that are loaded on them. The Content Delivery Network (CDN) takes the images on the archives and distributes them to Bulbapedia and Bulbanews. Werdnae (talk) 18:32, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Automagically redirected to pornographic site

So I was surfing on my iPhone 3G with iOS 4.2.1 yesterday in between 12:50 AM UTC and 1:20 AM UTC (don't remember exactly what was the time) when I fired up Mobile Safari and directed the browser to Bulbapedia's main page. Now, I don't remember tapping anything on the screen but there's a chance I did without noticing it. Either way, I'm not convinced it was accidental tapping. What happened is that I suddenly got redirected multiple times through the ad network until I reached this, which is a pornographic site. Now, I don't have anything against adult-themed content as I'm 19 but why in hell was I sent there in the first place? I demand an explanation. SatoMew 23:05, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Pedia down?

Was it? It seems it was earlier… --Abcboy (talk) 03:59, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

I think Bulbapedia was down earlier, along with Video Game Wiki. I tried several times, even exiting out of my browser and going back in, but that didn't work. I think something was up with the servers the wikis run on. (Charizard101 (talk) 02:55, 26 October 2012 (UTC))
Video Game Wiki...? If that's a Wikia site, their downtime is unrelated to Bulbapedia's downtime. R.A. Hunter Blade 03:44, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Then can anyone tell me what Bulbapedia's being down was all about? I was slightly confused about that. (Charizard101 (talk) 01:02, 27 October 2012 (UTC))
On the 22nd and the 23rd UTC, Bulbapedia was down for quite a few errors. Due to B2W2 server load, the servers have been unstable. --Abcboy (talk) 01:06, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the info. After the big server move they did, I can see why they might have some problems. (Charizard101 (talk) 01:52, 27 October 2012 (UTC))
Is the broken layout and random downloading of pages related to this?Goomba98 (talk) 00:31, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Userspace edit limit - pages to be put into mainspace

I am going to be writing a major section for an article here, but it will be spread across several days, and want to merge it all in to the article at one time. So I am asking if the userspace edit limit applies to sandbox-like pages which will have information that will be put into the main namespace. So...does it? --TruePikachu (talk) 00:23, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Just keep it under 3, preview, don't do them within minutes of each other, and don't forget about the mainspace. The staff are more lenient on those kind of pages. --Abcboy (talk) 00:27, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
We're more lenient with stuff for the mainspace, but they're not unrestricted. I have to ask why the section can't be written into the actual article. Werdnae (talk) 01:06, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
I can keep it under 3 edits a day - it probably would be only 1 or 2. The section is large and technical, and I do not want to post an incomplete work into the mainspace - it could cause users to flood the talk page, edit it themselves (which would be horrible for the WIP), some might revert (with the way I work, initial versions might not end up looking like professional content, especially with notes all over the place in comments), and, worst comes to worst, I might keep an edit lock open for a period of 3 hours at a time - hardly an appropriate amount of time for mainspace. I would be making judicious use of the Preview functionality, as I am not entirely familiar with WikiCode. I will be merging the work into the appropriate mainspace page when it is completed.
I also wonder how capable Bulbapedia is of linking external images. The WIP section will probably have WIP images (hosted on my domain), and I would prefer to link those externally rather than uploading to the Archives for now, mainly to reduce server load.
And the main reason I ask is because the top bar is currently limiting userspace edits to 1/day, not the usual 3/day we had for quite a while. --TruePikachu (talk) 01:40, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
20100401001626%21BulbaBot.png
As you can see, I have externally linked an out-of-date image from the Archives. It's useful. And that's how you do that. --Abcboy (talk) 02:02, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Redirect to adult sites?

I'm writing this to report a serious problem I've had since a few months: while I'm on bulbagarden sites, I get redirected to an adult site and I can't return on the previous page. At first I thought it was a bad ad I opened inadvertently, but now I know for sure it is not that case. It first happened around december, and it got worse within the time... By now it almost happens once each fifty pages I open more or less. I usually get this problem on Bulbapedia, but it also happened once on the archives. It still haven't got this problem on the other bulbagarden sites but I think it's because I usually don't go on them. It is not a browser problem, since it happened with opera, chrome mobile and another mobile browser. I don't know if the fact I'm in Italy matters. I wrote down the site I get redirected to when I'm on the tablet. I don't have the desktop site because now I usually use my tablet, and I didn't think of writing down the URL. I first thought to add the link hidden in this discussion, but anybody could have still opened it. If you need it I can send it by email. Thanks for your attention--CiaobyDany (talk) 08:21, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

There are two possibilities here: 1) there's some rouge ad that's automatically redirecting you (without you even clicking it), which we would want to remove ASAP if we can or 2) you have a virus. If it is the former, then we want to know about it so it can be dealt with, so please post as many details as possible about it in the Bad Ad Reporting Thread. --SnorlaxMonster 08:59, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

"Synopsis"

Bulbapedia is sprawling with examples of lengthy, detailed, written accounts of short works of fiction which are (downright absurdly) labeled "Synopsis". Anyone who believes that this labeling is appropriate should consult a dictionary. They need to be either rewritten as actual synopses, or simply relabeled. I am in favor of the former, since the aforementioned (comparative) length and detail of the summaries, coupled with narratives that are often completely off the mark as summaries, but rather retells the work of fiction anew (as a story itself), render many of the site's "Synopsis"-sections highly unencyclopedic. I post this to engage in dialogue, so tell me what you think should(n't) be done, please. Yvnr (talk) 14:41, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, they should probably be called "Plot". I don't think we should remove massive amounts of information to just make them actually comply with the definition of a word that was incorrectly used to label them—simply, the label should be changed. I agree, a lot of them are basically stories themselves, and they shouldn't be. These sections should be written detailing what happened in present tense, not using any kind of emotive language. --SnorlaxMonster 15:26, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
Then we agree on that much. How will we go about renaming the sections? I suggested those massive amounts of information for removal under the assumption that an actual synopsis, and little more, was the degree of plot summary initially/ideally desired by an encyclopedia such as Bulbapedia. In other words, I believe that the scene-by-scene relaying, attempting to substitute the subject media content, as opposed to summarize its key points and provide the reader with an overview and some understanding of the work, is uncharacteristic of an encyclopedia, more fitting as content for other kinds of websites, or Bulbapedia's appendix namespace. That's my opinion, included since it ties in with the topic I brought up for discussion, but I realize that it isn't going places. As for ridding the sections of emotive language, I presume that this is already a long-established work in progress, carried out by editors who happen to read these sections, so nothing new there. Thank you for replying. Yvnr (talk) 15:36, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
They're still labeled as synopses. I can't imagine anyone disagreeing here, the suggestion is not pedantic, the change would be kind of easy to implement—what's the hold-up? Yvnr (talk) 13:48, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
So it's been decided that all "Synopsis" sections will be renamed "Plot", and an official blurb should be added where possible. Maverick Nate has already begun work on this. --SnorlaxMonster 04:00, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Sounds

We should use sounds. I'm pretty sure Wikipedia uses them, and besides, if our wikicode can handle videos, then it can handle sounds. If we can install sounds, we would be able to have Pokémon cries and possibly music themes*. Spyspotter 18:08, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Categorize the main page

It seems weird that there is even 1 uncategorized page. The main page would fit well in the Bulbapedia category*. Spyspotter 02:24, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Ads

Adds have been appearing on every page I visit, coming from the lower border of the screen, even when I'm already logged in, it's very bothering specially for editing. Since I haven't installed anything lately and it only happens on this site, I just wanted to make sure if this comes actually from Bulbapedia and will still happening, or not. It is? --Gabo 2oo (talk) 01:28, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

We did some stuff to our ad listings today, and clearly something is not quite right. We are aware of it and working on it. -- MAGNEDETH 01:43, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
On my browser, there are ads that pop up and say, "Find out more about what is changing and why. Find out more about this new ad unit." It requires me to turn it off, which can warp me to a different page, which is annoying while editing. And needless to say, this is happening while I'm logged on. It's a technical issue. It will be fixed as soon as possible. --SnorlaxMonster 04:19, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

2 Problems

1. The search bar blocks part of the page, which is annoying especially when editing.

2. I don't know where else to post this, so I'll post it here. Whenever I try to post on the forums, there is no typing field and instead there is an indigo-colored blank space between the post title and the other stuff.

Can someone fix those errors? Spyspotter says… Edit the mainspace, kids! 03:17, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

It may be an issue with your browser, what browser do you use and how long has the problem been occurring? --Pokemaster97 03:54, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
IE and Safari. The problem's been going on for as long as I was here. Spyspotter says… Edit the mainspace, kids! 03:56, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Long-Running Script

Whenever I visit a page that isn't in the main or talk namespace, an error message will pop up 90% of the time and say that bulbapedia has stopped functioning due to a "long-running script." I then have 2 options:

1. Click "stop script," and then be redirected to a page that says Bulbagarden has been shut down permanently, and be unable to go back.

2. Click "cancel," and then watch my computer crash. The only way to fix that would be to unplug it.

First of all, what is this "long-running script?" And, how in tarnation does the "Bulbagarden shut down" message appear? And, can those errors be fixed somehow? Spyspotter says… Edit the mainspace, kids! 02:49, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

What browser and addons are you using? That might help us try to nail down what's causing the issue. Werdnae (talk) 02:58, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
I should add, this only happens on IE. Also, bigger pages are more likely to crash my computer, not to say that small ones don't. Spyspotter says… Edit the mainspace, kids! 03:05, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

x and y countdown

Now that we know the release date of x and y there should be a countdownn like the one bulbapedia had for black and white 0danmaster0 (talk) 06:22, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

The system we were using for the countdown was broken by a MediaWiki update a while back and no longer works. We haven't yet got another system to function adequately in order to replace it. Werdnae (talk) 22:47, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Problems?

Every time I want to access a page, it asks if I want to download it. It is only after a click the link around 20 times that I can go the page without having to download it. For example, this is what I get if I want I click "Random":

I tested this out with Firefox and Google Chrome, still the same error. Along with this, certain pages are styled strangely - for the editing box for editing the talkpage of the main page, the editing box is rather tiny, and the character palette has all clickable symbols underlined, any of these symbols when clicked doing nothing (with the exception of taking you to the top of the page).

On the front page, there is no light grey "Search" word in the search box, and the UTC clock has disappeared. Sometimes there is a rather medium sized space between the "Due to a security issue..." message and the "Welcome to Bulbapedia!" message. Also, sometimes the green background turns into a white background.

Also, some pages are displayed without the stylesheet.--NOBODY (talk) 14:17, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Prerelease policy suggestion

(Not sure whether there's a good/easily-seen place to put this, so I'm gonna put it here Just Because.) As I'm sure most people are aware, the disconnect between the Archives and Bulbapedia means that some images are stuck in their old forms for days, weeks, or months after they've been updated on the Archives. Judging by prerelease Pokémon reveals so far this generation, we're getting Sugimori art within hours or a couple of days after we put low-quality CoroCoro scans on our pages, and then the Sugimori art takes a long time to get repaired on our pages. This makes our pages look unpolished for everyone and confuses new users, leading them to unnecessarily suggest that the art be updated even though it technically already has been. To neutralize this problem, I suggest that low-quality prerelease scans use a different image file name than the final artwork. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 22:49, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

As problematic as it is, one of the first reasons against it I have is that if they are uploaded as separate files, we lose the history of the file, and what we had at a specific point in time. I actually find having image histories more important in the long run than removing them in order to fix problems in the short run. MaverickNate 23:13, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Point taken; I hadn't thought about that. As an alternative approach to a solution, is there any possibility of finding a way to lessen the syncing problem itself? Perhaps some kind of way of marking certain images (like these prerelease scans) as "high importance" or something to get the software to attempt to sync them more often? Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 23:46, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
On the other hand, keeping the magazine scans as separate images would allow us to keep the history of the Bulbanews articles, in that we would have magazine croppings on the BN article when that was all we had, but the clean artworks when we got those. Ideally though, there would be some way to fix the Archives caches issue. --SnorlaxMonster 07:14, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Pokemon - Ken Sugimori Artworks

Hi! I would like to ask if ever we could change all Pokemon official high quality Artworks with smaller but unified sizes from Pokemon Zukan Website? I just ripped all the Pokemon images from Zukan website, Thank you... --GASPERshut... 06:35, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

I don't think shadows are wanted. Also, I think that high resolution images are better as well. For artworks, consistent dimensions is not as important. --SnorlaxMonster 07:15, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Well, there is some information about certain Pokémon that we don't have, such as a tidbit I saw about Honedge. It says: "If you were to carelessly take this blade in hand, you may find that blue cloth wrapping around you... draining the energy from your body!" Also, it says Inkay has transmitters above its eyes that can drain the will to fight from other Pokémon, and it says Malamar has some of the strongest hypnotic powers of any Pokémon, it can make other Pokémon bend to its will, and many people try to use it for nefarious purposes. I bet there's more, but this should be going on the species articles, not the Main Page. KyuremsIceBlade 19:30, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Ampersands in titles

For articles that contain ampersands (& ←like this), clicking the edit top of page link or new section link leads to a window where you end up editing a page with a title that goes up to before the first ampersand. For example: editing this page in this manner leads to editing this page instead. In other words, the ampersand performs a cutoff. How can this be resolved? Berrenta (talk) 23:00, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

That doesn't seem to be happening for me. The ampersands that are part of the page titles end up being replaced by the character code "%26", thus avoiding the cutoff, when I go to edit the page you used as an example. Out of curiosity, what web browser is this happening on? Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 23:18, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
This is on a Safari browser. Haven't checked IE yet. Berrenta (talk) 23:59, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
If the problem is happening on Safari, I would not recommend using IE as an alternative, it will probably still happen. I'm on Chrome, and that replaces & with %26. Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 00:21, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Likewise, Firefox also replaces ampersands with %26. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 00:36, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Actually, I'm reproducing Berrenta's glitch in Firefox. The problem arises not from clicking the "edit this page" link but rather from the "[edit top of page]" link to edit the top-most section. Miles (talk) 00:39, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Yup, reproducing it in Chrome using the Edit top of page link. --It's Funktastic~!話してください 00:41, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Well then, seeing as I never use that "Edit top of page", it's understandable why I never noticed it. The issue does not seem to happen when editing sections, either. Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 01:01, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, it also used to occur when trying to follow a redlinked page with an ampersand in the tile (although it seems to work fine now). To prevent the issue, I guess adding __NOEDITSECTION__ to the top of any page with an ampersand in the title would work; for Pokémon Box Ruby & Sapphire, I just protected Pokémon Box Ruby to prevent accidental creation. --SnorlaxMonster 06:23, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Looks like that because the first section is set up in a special way, __NOEDITSECTION__ has no effect. If there is no page at the part of the title before the ampersand, it should be create-protected. Otherwise, just avoid using "edit top of page" of pages with ampersands in them. --SnorlaxMonster 06:26, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Would it be possible and feasible to force redirect a section back into editing the lead. Example: Edit "Arceus LV.X Deck: Grass" to feature a redirect to Arceus LV.X Deck: Grass & Fire (TCG) in editing mode? --Super goku (talk) 06:53, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
:/ Since I just realized that wouldn't work, would a better idea be to move the articles with "&" to "and" while including {{wrongtitle}} in the lede? Especially since the search function doesn't play well with the ampersand. --Super goku (talk) 07:42, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
What issue is there with the search function? I've never heard of that one before, and I can't find it. & only causes minor issues, so since it is technically possible to use in titles, I think we should. --SnorlaxMonster 07:51, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
I was referring to searching for anything containing an "&" prevents any results from showing up. Example --Super goku (talk) 07:55, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Results show up if the searched text contains an &, it's just not if you only search an &. All special characters are ignored on the search page, so you get the same result if you search ! or @. --SnorlaxMonster 08:11, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Okay, tested in Internet Explorer, and it seems to work normally there, as & was properly converted to %26. Seems the issue only applies to certain browsers, like Safari. Berrenta (talk) 18:15, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Kogoro updated the code, but because of where it is, it's very slow to update. Browser choice has nothing to do with the issue at all, simply the javascript that encoded those links had failed to 'escape' the page title, and with the limited knowledge of javascript among active staff it took us a while to figure out how to fix it. Also, something to note is that it does not escape the characters @*/ and + The only of which should matter is the rarely used +. Werdnae (talk) 20:16, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, I tested again on Safari today, and it seems to work properly now. Thanks for the update! ^_^ Berrenta (talk) 22:03, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Names of Pokemon games in general

Hey! Just wanted to bring this giant post I just typed elsewhere to your attention, instead of retyping the same info over again: http://vgmdb.net/forums/showpost.php?p=56272&postcount=3 In short, Japan stopped using "Pocket Monsters" outside of the katakana when R/S dropped, and at the same time Nintendo as a whole started up a consistent branding scheme (actually I'm not entirely sure how it scales to everything else but) that most people don't seem to notice (only with X/Y has this been changed (for the better)). Because of this, I believe we (and Wikipedia, and everywhere else) needs to rethink how we handle the game titles. There's a reason things like the albums refer to themselves as "Pokémon", and it's not to be "import friendly". If I've come across as a bit brusque, I apologize, but I find it a bit silly that this has gone unnoticed for a decade! Despatche (talk) 08:26, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I get your point that in Japan the English name of the games is "Pokémon Ruby" etc. after RS, but I'm not entirely sure what you're suggesting. The italic English text next to Japanese names is supposed to be a translation of the text, and there is a katakana difference between "Pokémon" and "Pocket Monsters", so they are translated as such where appropriate. It is important to note that the Japanese text does say "Pocket Monsters", as in Japan the main series is officially the "Pocket Monsters series" [1]. Also, it's worth noting that Pokémon Stadium does the exact opposite of what you mentioned: the katakana says "Pokémon", but the Latin text says "Pocket Monsters" (for all three games). --SnorlaxMonster 11:15, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
Ah, sorry. I'm suggesting that we should use "Pokémon" as that transliteration for these later games instead of "Pocket Monsters", because that's what Nintendo does... we do the same for Pokemon themselves, for example. The trick is that you really want to avoid transliterating if you can help it; you can produce multiple official titles out of what looks like one. Basically, what's happening is that you have a katakana (here, anyway) title that is always used within itself, and a Roman-based title that is always used within itself--"進撃の巨人" and "Attack on Titan" is similar--two completely different titles used within the same context to refer to the same work (at the same time). That page may say "ポケットモンスターシリーズ", but you can bet it would have used "Pokémon" if they could help it.
And yeah, with the Stadium case, those games were part of the old branding, which used "Pokemon" whenever it pleased. Technically, "Pokémon" is actually part of a "phrase shortening" trend that's pretty common in Japanese ("Famicom"'s a great example, and this is also why the term is even "Pokémon" to begin with), so it was occasionally used by Nintendo wherever they felt; Pokemon Puzzle Challenge became "Pokemon no Panepon" (heh, "Panepon" is another example of that shortening, being short for Panel de Pon) for its Japanese release, for example.
(Fun fact: technically the katakana isn't actually "Pocket Monsters" transliterated; there's a common tendency (it's totally random!) to remove the final S/Z sound at the end of plurals in these transliterations, so it's really "Pocket Monster". "ポケットモンスターシリーズ" is a great example of with and without, in fact. Platinum is similar; the katakana actually reads "platina" (a word usually used to refer to alloys of platinum) and at least one Nintendo website uses this.) Despatche (talk) 06:03, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
I think I get your point, but the problem is that the "English name in Japan" is not an accurate translation of the actual text. Pokémon names are only alternate romanizations, not alternate phrases entirely. Pokémon and Pocket Monsters are used distinctly, so the translation should accurately reflect this. In your Attack on Titan example, were we to have an article on it (it's not relevant to Pokémon, so we shouldn't), it would be formatted as
Attack on Titan (Japanese: 進撃の巨人 Advancing Titans)
However, I do take your point that it would be useful to note the official Asian-English names of the games, but the problem is that in the case of Pearl (for example), we have ポケットモンスター officially as Pokémon, but nothing for パール. (Asian-English is a term used in Yu-Gi-Oh, so I'm borrowing it here for clarity; there may be a better term, but it will do for the circumstances.) For the record, platinum in Japanese comes from the Spanish word "platina" rather than the English one, thus why it is formatted as such (or at least, that's what I remember being told by my high-school Japanese teacher). --SnorlaxMonster 11:50, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
1. "Pokémon" is most definitely a distinct title from "ポケモン", even. Titles are not about meaning, not ever; they are always about physical structure. It's pretty obvious that there are three different titles used (for whatever reasons there may be) to refer to the same work: "Pokémon", "ポケモン", and "ポケットモンスター". What else is there to it? (As a sidenote, I disprove of the preference for translations, specifically over romaji... where can I open a discussion about that?)
2. That sounds like a pretty good case for not having romaji at all, doesn't it? Fortunately, Nintendo at least provides "Platinum" here (nearly every single Japanese page on the game uses it), and likely provides the same for the other games (at the least, they outright use "Pokémon <version>" on every soundtrack album since Ruby and Sapphire's). Suggestion

I know we changed the Pokemon artwork images to a square ratio for practical reasons, not aesthetic ones, but now that they're the standard, other articles with Sugimori images — Valerie is the one I noticed, but most humans' articles, in fact — look abnormal because they break this new standard. Can we just apply the square requirement to all official art used in infoboxes so things match aesthetically? (I know this is totally not a priority and thus will absolutely not happen at least until the XY info is all put up, but I thought I'd suggest it to be implemented at some point in the future.) Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 23:50, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

This was actually something we bought up whilst making the decision to square the images of Pokemon. With the character art a lot of the pictures are a fair bit taller then what they are wide, whereas with Pokemon, the difference is to a much less significant degree. As a result, when the character images are forced to comply with the infobox a significant amount of quality is loss. --Spriteit (talk) 06:11, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Pokémon X and Y sprites and icons

I just wanna ask when you guys will have the X and Y icons and sprites. Raichu8575 (talk) 15:50, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

"Sprites" in the traditional sense don't really exist anymore; Pokémon in Gen VI are represented by fully in-motion 3D models with no single "still image" to really take as a sprite. That's probably why in the Evolution section of any Pokémon page, you'll see official artwork instead of the current sprite like there used to be. The Sprites section may end up being something that only goes up to Gen V now. As for the icons? I saw some Gen VI icons around a few days ago but they're since been removed, apparently. No clue why. --KiANGLO (TALK) 22:57, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Likely if we can get the files, we might create a model section for each Pokémon, though it isn't possible at the moment. --Super goku (talk) 00:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
There's still party sprites, even for completely new Pokémon. They're also used when choosing a Friend Safari to enter. Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 00:05, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
I know, and like I said I saw them before; on a type page I think, when it listed all the Pokémon of that type. Gen VI Pokémon were there, icon and all. Maybe someone uploaded icons but they got taken down? --KiANGLO (TALK) 03:26, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, they were taken down because the user who uploaded them admitted to stealing them from Serebii. The images will be uploaded once someone can get them themselves and not steal them from other sites.--ForceFire 03:50, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
I would just like to add to this that Nintendo has solved our problem for us, the update for 3DS that is coming this month adds Miiverse support and the ability to take screenshots whenever you want and have them posted to Miiverse. Obviously we can have people go and take pictures of every Pokemon and we can remove the background and use those as the "sprites". If any staff is reading this I would gladly help with this once the update is out, as I know it will be a huge undertaking.ArchedThunder (talk) 08:53, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
Well... The update came out and for some reason you can't take pictures of Pokemon X and Y... I hope they update it so you can.ArchedThunder (talk) 08:55, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Watchlist

Hi there. So I've been having trouble adding a page to my watchlist these past few days. It's the Clemont anime page and it keeps saying an error occurred. I w as just wondering if this was just me or if other people are having trouble to??RBK (talk) 17:48, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

The "watch"/"unwatch" button at the top of the page seems to be broken. You can find my report here. Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 18:26, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for letting me know, I'm glad to know it wasn't just me :).RBK (talk) 19:12, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, a couple of people have been reporting this problem. Just dropping a note to say that the staff is aware of the problem, and we're working to get it fixed. --Pokemaster97 22:09, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Vunderbar. Glad to know something like this, even if seemingly minor, has been noticed by staff. Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 22:40, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Volcanion, Hoopa, and Diancie

So I'm sure most of you have heard about the three legendary event Pokemon recently found in the coding for X and Y. So I want to ask: Why do we not have pages for them?

Obviously we don't have any info yet, and I understand that, but we had a page for Trevenant long before we even knew his English name. Couldn't we make a page for them and not have any info for them (even PokeDex number)? I know they're real, I went into the X and Y GTS and saw for my self. So I think we need pages for them.

Opinions? (And before you give them, please read my ENTIRE post. I've gotten way too many posts that have logic that I already broke in my explanation. And if you don't think my explanation is accurate, tell me why. Cuz it gets annoying when its just "NO WE DONT HAVE ANY INFO IDIOT. YOUR STUPID."

Nutter Butter (talk) 17:49, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

That's because at the time, Trevenant's existence was confirmed by official footage. --The Truth aka Relicant 17:51, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Before this conversation goes too far, let me redirect you to the already-ongoing discussion about these three at Bulbapedia talk:Editor's Hub → Regarding Volcanion, Hoopa and Diancie. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 18:01, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Diancie now has a page, but here's what I'm wondering: why would we have pages talking about Mega Lati@s if they haven't been confirmed? Just saying. --Derpyderpy (talk) 14:19, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

MediaWiki update/upgrade

It's what's causing some template issues right now, isn't it? And while we're at it, could the "Erika's Garden" skin be updated and fixed? SatoMew 23:13, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Where are the menu sprites for new Pokémon, bag sprites for Mega Stones and other newly introduced items (Assault Vest, etc.)?

We had them all up before but they keep getting taken down! What's the problem? Does anyone here have any idea of when they will be back up for good? It's getting really annoying to see the red error text and ? mark sprites throughout the site! Dialgafan1 (talk) 20:56, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

They were stolen from other fan sites, so they were deleted off of the archives. --It's Funktastic~!話してください 20:58, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
That's Pokémon sprites. The bag sprites - the user claimed to have 3DS Capture Card, but hasn't given any proof within requested period of time. Uploader (talk) 21:01, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

What really annoys me the most is that if they were taken from Serebii, who honestly cares! It's gonna likely be in the exact same quality if someone were to rip the sprites with a capture card. But the law is the law. I wish we could just ask them for permission to take their stuff so we can clear this whole mess up. I honestly think no one is gonna upload the sprites anytime soon. Dialgafan1 (talk) 21:06, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

It's too early to determine that. Besides, Generation VI just started. PattyMan 21:08, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
Joe (aka Serebii, aka webmaster of the Serebii) will care, since he stated that he doesn't want us to use stuff acquired from his website. Uploader (talk) 21:13, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
To build on this, we can ask for permission to use the resources that others have put up. No one has explicitly given permission for us to do so, thus there is no sprites at the moment. --Super goku (talk) 21:19, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

About the "characteristics" of types...

I noticed that within each page on the individual Pokémon types, there is a 'Characteristics' section, which describes both defensive and offensive characteristics. However, is this all really necessary? Firstly, this seems like Smogon standards, and shouldn't belong on a site that discusses only facts. Second, each 'Characteristics' section says pretty much the same thing. "It's good overall." This is just my opinion, but I don't think it's really that needed. Zorocario (talk) 02:13, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

I agree. It's opinionated and, in my experience, tends to attract editors who (A) add more egregiously opinionated material that just has to be removed and (B) are especially unfamiliar with our standards of notability. I'd love to see the sections axed. All of the important unopinionated information in them is already given in the type effectiveness and average stat sections on the same pages. Problem

Mobile View button and m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net do not load any version of the site. Snowe (talk) 06:16, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Same problem. Whenever I try to do either it just tells me the site doesn't exist. Tried it on both the desktop and a mobile phone. --Weavile Warrior (talk) 01:50, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
I've had this problem with every browser i've tried. Tried on desktop and my phone, but neither work. Can it be fixed?--SamurottMaster4747 (talk) 02:18, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
I think the problem is because there isn't an m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net. If you want to browse from your phone, you can go right on to the normal site. A mobile site has to actually be coded for it to exist. If no one made it, it won't just automatically be there just because you're using a phone. Schiffy (瀬藤健二) (Talk Contribs) 16:43,1/28/2014 (UTC)
But there is a mobile site option at the bottom of the homepage, which means it must be coded and existing.. --Weavile Warrior (talk) 22:23, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
The mobile option was added by a MediaWiki upgrade, but does not actually exist. Please do not use it. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 22:24, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Tecnical problem

When I'm on the home page, I get this message: Error creating thumbnail: convert: no decode delegate for this image format `/tmp/magick-cSDv1Klr' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/532. convert: missing an image filename `/tmp/transform_2ea9dab991f0-1.png' @ error/convert.c/ConvertImageCommand/3011. --Chero (talk) 16:03, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Click the running UTC clock at the top of the page, beside your username. The images should repair themselves. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 16:27, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Strange occurrence

I'm not really sure if there's an actual place to report general site bugs, but for some odd reason, Special:Log has the edit top of page option, which does nothing except take you to Special:Log. Schiffy (瀬藤健二) (Talk Contribs) 19:59,2/7/2014 (UTC)

This is still a thing. I'm not sure anyone is reading this after so long, but I just wanted to point it out once more, if it hasn't been noticed. PkmnASKE (talk) 15:17, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Mega Heracross and Mega Pinsir America Event

Starting today on August 13 in America, people can start getting a Mega Heracross in Pokémon X and a Mega Pinsir in Pokémon Y. This event will last until September 17 via Internet. Note; the Heracross and the Pinsir do NOT have their Mega Stones. You obtain their Mega Stones starting Monday, August 18. The end date for the Mega Stones is currently unknown. For me, it's there. Although once, the navigation bar did derp for me, so maybe...Eridanus (talk) 21:43, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
It is there now, but when I checked about an hour ago, it only had what I would assume would be default options: Main Page, Help, Recent Changes, and Random Page. --Super goku (talk) 21:55, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
By "Navigation" I'm assuming you mean just the bar that says navigation, which does not have the link to the forums. There is a "Bulbagarden" sidebar right below the search bar that has the link to the forums.--ForceFire 03:52, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
That assumption is correct. The navigation sidebar was the one that goofed up and only showed four of the seven links. --Super goku (talk) 04:24, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
Occasionally the sidebar hiccups and does that. It comes back eventually though. --SnorlaxMonster 06:47, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Uhhhh

When I go to "bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net", instead of taking me to the ain page by default, it takees me to some weird "nginx" thing :/ Nutter Butter (talk) 19:24, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

It brings me to the normal Main Page, it sounds like something might be redirecting you, maybe try running a virus scan or clearing your cookies, if it still happens, report it on the forums in the Bulbawiki General Forum. --Spriteit (talk) 00:33, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
If I understand things correctly, Nginx is a web server or at least software that runs as a server. Likely, Bulbagarden uses Nginx for at least part of the network, though I think that would be a question more for the Webmasters. Did it say something like "502 Bad Gateway - nginx\1.6.0" or so? --Super goku (talk) 06:18, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Possible evolution in anime

According to the poster of M18, Serena's Fennekin, Clemont's Luxio and Jessie's Pumpkaboo may evolve in the future. Could someone protect those articles? Raymond 06:26, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

StreetPass article

It just occurred to me that the wiki could probably afford to have an article about StreetPass. Considering that it's a 3DS feature that is used by several Pokémon games for 3DS (both main series and side games), I would think an article compiling its functionality and how to access it in each game would be worthwhile. I don't have time to make that right now, as I'm focused on other things, but maybe someone else could? —AndyPKMN (talk) 22:11, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

pointless

every attack article saYS "this article needs a better picture. reason: in has to be a generation 6 picture." why not leave it the way it is??? --Valehd (tAlk) 22:32, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

The reason why the notices are there is to have up-to-date information on all things Pokémon. It wouldn't be good if the third Gen images were the most current for all moves created prior to the fourth Gen. Adamws (talk) 00:53, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
<:( i just like generation 5 --Valehd (tAlk) 02:50, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

also...

please just remove bad words they scare me so muuuuuuuuuch waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh --Valehd (tAlk) 22:35, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

While it is in the Code of conduct that profanity is not looked on as a good thing, there is not too much that can be done. I'm not a fan of it either but as long as it is not where it shouldn't be, there shouldn't be a problem. Also, just saying there are bad words doesn't help. You actually need to point out where it is; then the proper actions can be taken. Adamws (talk) 00:53, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
There's nothing wrong with the occasional swear word. Plus, some people seem to think certain words are "bad" whilst others would think they're perfectly normal. It's completely impossible to censor what some people think as bad words. For example, to some people "hell" could be seen as a bad word. To me, there's nothing wrong with it at all. As long as they aren't directed towards another user as an insult, swear words are fine. Most people know them after all. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 15:52, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
really? bad words are NOT ok and the REALLY make me angry! I JUST HATE HOW THE WORLD ACTUALLY LIKES WHAT'S WRONG! --Valehd (tAlk) 02:52, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Links of Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance

Some of the links of Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance do not work correctly (Ex. Starfy Wiki). I noticed that if I take out the /Main_Page from the URL it will work. This may be different for other web browsers.

Ethan (Discussion) 04:16, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Yes. The Starfy Wiki and Golden Sun Universe links need to be altered to be /wiki/Main_Page instead of just /Main_Page due to a change (from a relatively long time ago) causing simply /Main_Page not to work. If I remember rightly there was a NIWA staff discussion of some sort arguing that everything in the NIWA wikis should be under /wiki/. I am not sure why and I no longer have the discussion archived, but the MediaWiki website thinks this is bad too. Super Mario Wiki didn't make the change. Chickasaurus (talk) 06:03, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

waaaaaaaaaaah

can you add pokemon cries from each game/generation? --Valehd (tAlk) 18:32, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

This has been discussed a while back (and I mean a while), and the answer was that we want it but the servers can't handle it. Not sure if that is still the case today, since it hasn't been brought up since.--ForceFire 03:59, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
ok then --Valehd (tAlk) 23:00, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Just for the record, "a while back" in this case means 2008-2009 since I was at least one of the people suggesting it. SatoMew 19:54, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
