Koffing (Japanese: ドガース Dogars) is a Poison-type Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Koffing is a round, purple Pokémon filled to the brim with toxic gases. Several crater-like protrusions on this Pokémon's body give it the resemblance of a naval mine. Koffing has a skull and cross-bones below its blissful face. Koffing has been considered to be related to Grimer, who is also a purple Poison-type Pokémon that associates with pollutants. Koffing may also be related to Drifloon, who is also a floating, round, purple, "X"-bearing Pokémon with a tendency to explode.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Koffing spews out poisonous gases whenever it gets agitated. Koffing has also been known to explode from over inflating its body. Koffing is also capable of launching Fire and Electrical attacks.

Behavior

Habitat

Koffing are a very common sight around burned down buildings, abandoned buildings and power plants.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Koffing mainly eat rotten kitchen garbage.

Special Facts

In an exam, it's mentioned in The Ultimate Test that Koffing was first discovered in a public bathouse, however it's unsure exactly when it was discovered. Judging that public bathouses were used in tudor times, we can infer that it was probably discovered in the late 1700's or early 1800's.

In the anime

Koffing first appeared in Pokémon Emergency as James's Pokémon. It evolved into Weezing during Dig Those Diglett.

A poacher had captured a bunch of Koffing in A Poached Ego.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga

Koffing is seen as one of Koga's Pokémon. When Koga and Green are ambushed by Agatha's Gengar in Template:PSV, Koga uses Koffing's smoke to relay his tactical plan to Green without Gengar noticing.

In the TCG

Main article: Koffing (TCG)

Other apperances

Super Smash Bros.

When released from a Poké Ball, Koffing will initiate a Poison Gas attack which will pummel an opponent. Koffing did not return in Super Smash Bros. Melee and was replaced by its evolution, Weezing.

Pokédex entries

This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation I.
Generation I
Red Because it stores several kinds of toxic gases in its body, it is prone to Template:M2 without warning.
Blue
Yellow In hot places, its internal gases could expand and Template:M2 without any warning. Be very careful!
Stadium A Pokémon that is like a thin-skinned balloon filled with a highly toxic gas. Known to occasionally explode.
Generation II
Gold Its thin, flimsy body is filled with gases that cause constant sniffles, coughs and teary eyes.
Silver The Template:M2 it contains are a little bit lighter than air, keeping it slightly airborne.
Crystal If one gets close enough to it when it expels Template:M2, the gas swirling inside it can be seen.
Stadium 2 Its thin, flimsy body is filled with gases that cause constant sniffles, coughs and teary eyes.
Generation III
Ruby If Koffing becomes agitated, it raises the toxicity of its internal gases and then jets them out from all over its body. This Pokémon may overinflate its round body, then Template:M2.
Sapphire Koffing embodies toxic substances. It mixes the toxins with raw garbage to set off a chemical reaction that results in a terribly powerful Poison Gas. The higher the temperature, the more gas is concocted by this Pokémon.
Emerald Getting up close to a Koffing will give you a chance to observe, through its thin skin, the toxic gases swirling inside. It blows up at the slightest stimulation.
FireRed Its thin, balloon-like body is inflated by horribly toxic gases. It reeks when it is nearby.
LeafGreen Because it stores several kinds of toxic gases in its body, it is prone to Template:M2 without warning.
Generation IV
Diamond Lighter-than-air gases in its body keep it aloft. The gases not only smell, they are also explosive.
Pearl Lighter-than-air gases in its body keep it aloft. The gases not only smell, they are also explosive.

Trivia

  • Koffing's original English name was going to be "Ny", the initials of New York.
  • Koffing was depicted as having its skull-and-crossbones pattern being above its face in Pokémon Red and Blue and the Japanese Pokémon Blue, rather than the pattern being under its face as portrayed in the original versions of Pokémon Red and Green and later games. It is unknown if this was purposely done or if it was a sprite error (similar to the error of Raikou's sprite in Pokémon Gold and Silver).
  • Koffing is the favorite Pokémon of Pokemopolis.
  • According to a question of a Pokémon Exam the characters of the anime participate in, Koffing was supposedly first discovered in a public bathhouse. However, the Team Rocket expansion's Koffing card states that Koffing was first discovered in a weapons factory. This may be either because Jessie answered the question incorrectly or just a general inconsistency between the TCG and anime.

Origin

Considering its looks, its ability to float, and its tendency to explode, it may have been based upon a floating naval mine.

Name origin

Koffing's name is a corruption of the word coughing. Its Japanese name is a combination of 獰 , meaning bad, or 毒 doku, meaning poisonous, and gas.
