Gary Oak (Japanese: オーキドシゲル Shigeru Ōkido, Brazilian: Gary Carvalho) is the prime rival of Ash, and grandson of Professor Oak. He started out as an arrogant, snot-nosed brat -- like his game counterpart, Blue -- but eventually matured and became a Pokémon researcher like his grandfather. His Japanese voice actor is 小林優子 Yūko Kobayashi, his English voice actors are Matt Mitler till Season 3 and Jimmy Zoppi Season 3-present, and his Brazilian-Portugese voice actors are Rodrigo Andreatto and Marcelo Campos (in Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl).
Gary has an attitude of catch first, ask questions later, as seen in Showdown at the Poké Corral.
In Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl, Gary works on Sayda Island.
His Japanese name is derived from Shigeru Miyamoto, who is sometimes seen as a rival of Satoshi Tajiri. His English name could have been derived from his Japanese name. It my also be a play off the Garry oak, a type of oak tree.

Trivia
- Gary is probably one of the few characters to have his English dub voice remained unchanged throughout the series. From EP001 to this day, he has been voiced by Jimmy Zoppi. However, he is now credited as Billy Beach under his TAJ Productions work.
- The only known losses Gary has had during the entire series were against Mewtwo (while under Giovanni's control), another trainer at Indigo Plateau, and against Ash during the Silver Conference.
