Starmie (Japanese: スターミー Starmie) is a dual-type Water/Psychic Pokémon.
It evolves from Staryu by Water Stone.
Biology
Physiology
Starmie, like its pre-evolved form, resembles a sea star. This time its main body is violet but it still retains the gold formation on its front. Starmie’s red jewel core is larger than Staryu’s and has developed to resemble a cut precious stone. The major change that took place upon evolution to Starmie was the growing of a second star on its back. It is semi-attached being able to spin 360°
Gender differences
This Pokémon is genderless.
Special abilities
Starmie’s central core shines with the seven colors of the rainbow when looked at from different angles, but usually shows up red more than any other color. It can also emit electrical waves from the core that are powerful enough to reach the furthest parts of the universe.
It uses it second star to propel itself through the water and even to launch out of the water and fly through the air for short periods of time. This also allows it use attacks like Rapid Spin.
Starmie still has all of the abilities of Staryu including re-growing limbs, changing its skins color and texture as well as using its core for energy attacks.
Behavior
As Starmie, the Pokémon’s behaviors hint more and more to it being an alien from another planet. At night it becomes active, just like Staryu, although now it will send off mysterious radio signals while its luminescent core flickers.
Habitat
Starmie are a rare sight in the wild, as they require a Water Stone to evolve from Staryu. Not only this, but they are nocturnal, usually only appearing at night. If they are ever found in the wild it is in the deepest parts of the ocean among many other Staryu.
Diet
Main article: Pokémon food
Like most Pokémon, Starmie’s eating habits are unknown but it’s very probable it filter feeds considering the Pokémon’s lack of a mouth.
In the anime
Misty's Starmie first appeared in The Water Flowers of Cerulean City.
A trainer named Marina used a Starmie to batte Misty in Bye Bye Psyduck.
Rudy, the Gym Leader of Trovita Island, used a Starmie in his battle against Ash's Squirtle in Misty Meets her Match.
In the manga
Pokémon Special
Starmie is one of Misty's Pokémon, it makes a cameo in the Red, Green & Blue chapter in Gyarados Splashes In! in one of her Poké Balls, however it debuts later in its round Suddenly Starmie defeating Red in the Cerulean Gym.
In the TCG

Sprites
Trivia
- Starmie is one of 7 Pokémon (the others being Staryu, the Legendary golems, and Zubat) that has no apparent eyes.
- Its Generation II sprites show its central core to be purple. It may be that the game designers intended the core to mimic the color of the 'seastar' body, as with the shiny sprite, the core is a sapphire with the body being blue as well.
- In addition, the core's color has been inconsistent throughout the generations. In Generation II it was purple, Generation III it appeared as bright red, and recently the core has changed to a mauve color. This may be to illustrate the core's affinity with glowing different colors.
- Despite the recent 3D games (as well as Pokémon Ranger), the anime has not shown the second star to rotate.
- Regardless of being powerful and having a versatile movepool, as well as the appropriate secondary type, it has yet to be used by a Template:Type2 Trainer, whereas many other secondary-typed psychics have found their way on psychic teams (for example, Sabrina's Exeggutor).
- Starmie is also tied with Floatzel for the fastest Water-type Pokémon with the base speed of 115.
- Despite being a genderless Pokémon, it was still able to learn egg moves in Gold and Silver. This was fixed in Crystal where it could no longer breed with any Pokémon except Ditto.
- Seaking, Staryu, and Starmie are three of six total Pokémon in the original Kanto Dex who are clustered together and have the first letter of their names match without being in the same evolutionary chain (although Staryu and Starmie are). The other set of three is Electrode, Exeggcute and Exeggutor (although again, Exeggcute and Exeggutor are in the same evolutionary chain).
Origin
It may just be a stylized seastar. But on account of the second star on its back, it bears resemblance to a crown of thorns starfish.
Name origin
Starmie's name is derived from star, referring to its shape, and mie, which may be a misspelling of me, in opposition to the yu in Staryu. Its name may also involve 珠, which can be read as mi, meaning gem or jewel, obviously referring to its core.
In other languages
- German: Starmie
- French: Staross - From the English words star and us, referring to the English name Staryu and Starmie (Star You and Star Me).
- Korean: 아쿠스타 Akuseuta
