Misty's Starmie (Japanese: カスミのスターミー Kasumi's Starmie) was one of the three original Pokémon acquired by Misty in the Kanto region prior to the start of the anime, and the third to be seen in her possession.

Original series
Starmie in its debut

Misty rarely used Starmie in battle, generally favoring Staryu to battle on land and often Psyduck by mistake. Starmie was typically featured in a more instrumental capacity than its pre-evolved counterpart, being used to traverse water on many occasions.

In The Water Flowers of Cerulean City, Starmie was used in Misty's Cerulean Gym match against Ash. Misty had successfully beaten Butterfree with Staryu, and Starmie was called out against Pidgeotto, suggesting that, at this time, Starmie was more powerful than Staryu. It dived underwater to dodge Pidgeotto's Whirlwind and shot up into the air to land a Tackle. However, its second Tackle was deflected by Wing Attack. It was blown into a Gym wall by a Gust attack, on the brink of losing before Team Rocket intervened. The battle was called off and Ash was given the Cascade Badge regardless.

Starmie and Misty

In The School of Hard Knocks, Misty was incensed by Joe's insistence that he could easily defeat her Water Pokémon as he had done it countless times on the simulator. She promptly challenged him to a real battle and sent out Starmie to prove its strength against his Weepinbell. Starmie used a single Water Gun and knocked out Weepinbell, leading to Joe's ridicule by Giselle. However, Misty then challenged Giselle, calling her out for not being a true friend. Giselle's Graveler proved to be a very powerful opponent, deflecting Water Gun by spinning and then smashing into Starmie, shattering the center gem and knocking it through the window and into the pool. Starmie's regenerative abilities were also demonstrated, as by the next time it was seen, its central core was repaired.

Starmie was sent out to battle a wild Oddish in Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village. It successfully weakened Oddish with Water Gun and Tackle, but was knocked out in one Tackle from the Bulbasaur that came to its defense.

It later helped to rescue the trio from the sinking St. Anne in Pokémon Shipwreck, carrying Brock from the ship, and later towing the group's raft out of the range of James's raging Gyarados. In Tentacool & Tentacruel, it rescued the sailors that had been attacked.

Starmie bearing Misty across the water

It appeared to have an Ability similar to Water Absorb, even though Abilities did not exist when Misty was a main character. This was demonstrated when, in Bye Bye Butterfree, Starmie chased Team Rocket away with a Tackle, but was knocked out when Jessie smashed it with a hammer. However, it seemed to regain its health when Misty jetted water on it. In Pokémon Scent-sation!, it helped Staryu and Squirtle put out the fire at Celadon Gym with Water Gun.

Starmie paired with Misty in The Flame Pokémon-athon!. It made the final four as it was able to surf across the river course. However, like the other contestants, its efforts were sabotaged by Team Rocket, and it was blinded by a Sludge attack from Weezing, taking it out long enough to allow Dario, the man who had encouraged Team Rocket, to make a break for the finish line.

Misty attempted to round off her team of four in Princess vs. Princess with Starmie, but Psyduck popped out of its Poké Ball instead. This happened quite commonly with Starmie and Psyduck.

In The Misty Mermaid, Misty stopped off at the Cerulean Gym after Horsea was feeling sick due to a lack of open water exercise. Misty also reluctantly left Starmie there because her sisters wanted to borrow it for their water ballet performances.

Pokémon Chronicles

Misty reunited with Starmie in Cerulean Blues, when she assumed the role of the Cerulean Gym Leader. Starmie was later scared off during Gyarados's rampage.

Starmie briefly reappeared in A Date with Delcatty when Misty was feeding the Pokémon.

In Luvdisc is a Many Splendored Thing!, Starmie performed as a part of Daisy's water ballet.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In Bearing Down Easy!, Misty used Starmie to destroy some ice so Ash and his friends could chase after a Beartic. It was soon after recalled to avoid being frozen.

Personality and characteristics

As Starmie wasn't given many onscreen appearances, little is known about its personality. When in battle, it was shown to be quite obedient and loyal to Misty. Starmie has been known to sometimes droop and bend its points when in pain or disappointment.

Starmie was first used during a Gym battle against Red in Suddenly Starmie. It easily withstood Saur's Vine Whip and then swiftly defeated him.

In You Know...Articuno!, Misty flew away on Starmie after trading Red her Gyarados.

Yellow arc

In Striking Golduck, Starmie sent a message to Cerise Island by using its gem to write glowing letters in the sky.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

In Lovely Lanturn, Starmie used its Psychic powers to write out Suicune's thoughts for Misty to read.

In Notorious Noctowl, Misty used Starmie in an exhibition match against Whitney at Indigo Plateau, swiftly defeating her Miltank with a barrage of attacks and thus winning the match for Misty with little effort.

Brock VS Misty Full-size Rubber Playmat

Pokémon Centers began selling the Brock VS Misty Full-size Rubber Playmat (Japanese: ラバープレイマット フルサイズ タケシVSカスミ Rubber Playmat: Full-size: Takeshi VS Kasumi) alongside the Trainer Battle Decks on January 25, 2019. This 2-player playmat features artwork of Brock and his Onix in one play area and Misty and her Starmie in the opposite play area. Both Gym Leaders feature their updated appearances from Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

  • The Misty & Starmie Sleeves (Japanese: デッキシールド カスミ＆スターミー Deck Shield: Kasumi & Starmie) feature Gym Leader Misty and her Starmie taking a break after a training session. The sleeves were illustrated by You Iribi.

Trivia

  • Starmie is Misty's first fully evolved Pokémon.
  • Starmie is the first Psychic-type Pokémon owned by a main character in the anime.
  • Despite Starmie serving as Misty's signature Pokémon in the games, in the anime, it has had much less screentime than its pre-evolved form.
  • Starmie has had the longest absence of any Pokémon belonging to one of Ash's friends in the main series, with a gap of 1,164 episodes between its physical appearances in The Misty Mermaid and Bearing Down Easy!.
