Clefairy (Japanese: ピッピ Pippi) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

The most well-known ability that a Clefairy has is the ability to use Metronome, a move that involves wiggling it's fingers back and forth in order to execute any attack at random (even to the user). Even without Metronome, Clefairy is capable of learning a vast amount of elemental attacks.

Behavior

Clefairy are very shy and timid creatures. As such, they rarely show themselves to humans. Clefairy also seem to have gained a reputation as kleptomaniacs, since there have been various reports of Clefairy being seen stealing random junk.

Habitat

Clefairy are elusive Pokémon in the wild. The best place to find them is a Mt. Moon, especially at a night during a full moon.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

In the anime

While Clefairy's first appearance was in EP006; in the original pilot episode, Clefairy was intended to be Ash's starting Pokémon. Due to a last minute change, the role went to Pikachu.

A group of Clefairies were going around stealing random junk in Virdian City to repair their spaceship during EP062. These Clefairies made another brief appearance in EP246.

In EP158, a Clefairy was used by Whitney to send Team Rocket flying and in the Gym Battle against Ash. The Fairy Pokémon was defeated by Ash's Cyndaquil.

Other appearances

Super Smash Brothers Melee

When released from a Pokéball, Clefairy will use Metronome triggering Blizzard, Explosion, or Fire Spin. All will hurt any opponents close to Clefairy.

Trivia

  • The prototype name for Clefairy was "Aria".
  • The glitch Pokémon LM4 will evolve into Clefairy at level 18.

Origin

It seems to be based on a fairy, being a magical, somewhat humanoid, winged creature, lending credit to its name.

Name origin

Clefairy's name is a combination of clef, French for (musical) key, and fairy. Its Japanese name may be a shortening and repetition of the word pixie. It's French name is a misspelling of melody.
