Brawly (Japanese: トウキ Touki) is the Gym Leader of Dewford Town's Gym, known officially as the Dewford Gym. Trainers who defeat him receive the Knuckle Badge. He is a young surfer who specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon.

In the games

Brawly's title is "A big wave in fighting." His strategy is direct physical attacks. He is also a deep thinker, often comparing the scene of battle to everyday life and vice-versa.

Brawly's Gym is kept in pitch-black darkness to test the bravery of the Trainers. Brawly also trains in the rough waves around Dewford and the pitch-black Granite Cave.

He believes the world awaits him as the next big wave. He often talks in surfing jargon, and constantly talks about "big waves"- both literal and metaphorical.

Brawly once trained with Bruno of the Kanto Elite Four in Sevault Canyon of Quest Island.

In addition to the Knuckle Badge, Brawly gives out TM08 (Bulk Up), in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Quotes

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald

Dewford Gym
  • Before battle
"I'm Brawly! Dewford's Gym Leader! I've been churned in the rough waves of these parts, and I've grown tough in the pitch-black cave! So you wanted to challenge me? Let me see what you're made of!"
  • When defeated
"Whoah, wow! You made a much bigger splash than I expected! You swamped me! Okay, you've got me. Take this Gym Badge!"
  • After being defeated
"The Knuckle Badge makes all Pokémon up to Level 30, even those you get in trades, obey without question. And, you'll be able to use the HM move Flash outside of battle. If you'd like, use this technical Machine, too."
"That TM08 contains Bulk Up. It's a move that raises both attack and defense stats."
"I can see your talent becoming a giant wave to cause a storm of astonishment among Trainers one day!"

Pokémon Emerald

Rematch
  • Before battle
"A wave may draw back, but it always returns to the shore. A giant wave of a talent like you... I knew you would return! Show me how much higher you've gone!"
  • When defeated
"Wow! Swamped again!"
  • After being defeated
"Battling is vast and it's deep. You can't see the bottom. It's just like the sea of Hoenn!"

In the anime

Brawly in the anime

He first appeared in Brave the Wave. Ash was very annoyed that Brawly would put off a Gym battle in favor of going surfing. At first, Ash was unable to realize Brawly was training his Pokémon by taking them surfing, and teaching them how to dodge and concentrate on keeping their balance. A combination of this special form of dodging and Ash's own arrogance allowed Brawly to best the younger Trainer despite a type disadvantage. After this and a conversation with Brawly where he explained his techniques, Ash trained for several weeks in anticipation of a rematch. Ash even went so far as to copy Brawly's wave-training to teach his Pokémon how to dodge and resist attacks.

Brawly again appeared in A Meditite Fight!, where Ash battled one of Brawly's students in a storm. Brawly showed up and told them to call off the match until the storm passed.

Brawly led everyone, even Team Rocket, to a cave on the shore to wait for the storm to pass. After seeing Ash's battle against his star pupil, Brawly agreed to a rematch in a private arena- a wave-swept islet off the coast of Dewford.

Using his Pokémon's new techniques and his newly-caught Corphish, Ash was finally able to claim the Knuckle Badge in Just One of the Geysers!.

Brawly once trained with Chuck, a Gym Leader from Johto. Brawly teaches many of the locals how to surf as well as how to train Pokémon. Many of his pupils at the Gym are surfers like himself.

Pokémon

This listing is of Brawly's Pokémon in the Pokémon anime.

Brawly's Machop
Machop
Machop was the first Pokémon Brawly used against Ash in both the first Gym battle and the rematch. During the first match it was sent up against Taillow and although Taillow kept using Wing Attack and hitting it, Machop kept getting up and eventually managed to knock Taillow out with a Cross Chop. Then, Ash used Treecko which was finally able to defeat it.

In Ash and Brawly's rematch, Machop was again used first. It began to overpower Treecko, but fell to Ash's newly-caught Corphish.

Machop's known moves are Cross Chop and Karate Chop.

Brawly's Hariyama

Main article: Brawly's Hariyama

Hariyama first appeared as a Makuhita and enjoys surfing the waves. After a Gym battle with Treecko, it evolved into Hariyama, and defeated Treecko. After helping the gang to escape from a violent storm, Ash had his rematch against Brawly. Hariyama was able to defeat Corphish and almost defeated Treecko, but thanks to Ash's strategy, Treecko was able to defeat Hariyama after a fierce battle.

Brawly and his Makuhita (top) with Roxanne and her Nosepass (left)

Brawly also trains his Pokémon by surfing with them in Pokémon Adventures. His strategy is to use "subtle forces" to counteract his opponents' strength and speed. He also likes to save his Pokémon's evolutions for battles.

During his match with Sapphire, his Makuhita evolved into Hariyama. Sapphire figured out that his use of Counter could be overcome by moves which attacked with multiple hits, such as Double Kick. Due to a misunderstanding, she was also expecting Brawly's Pokémon to evolve.

Brawly sided with Team Aqua in the Hoenn conflict because he wanted more places to surf. He changed his mind after Kyogre and Groudon started their rampage. His opponent during the Kyogre/Groudon fiasco was Mack. Using direct, brutal strength acquired from old friend Bruno instead of his usual strategy, he defeated him at the cost of his own Pokémon. He was last seen on the Pokémon Association's airship "Ba.Goon", resting from his injuries.

Brawly's Machop

Brawly's Machoke
Machop → Machoke
Machoke as a Machop, was the first Pokémon Brawly used in his battle against Sapphire where it fought against her Toro but was defeated by the newly evolved Combusken's moves before it could even use an attack. It later appeared again as a Machoke where it and its Trainer went to Fortree City for a Gym Leader's meeting. Brawly used it in his battle against Mack but it was defeated by his terrifying illusions.

Machoke's known moves are Focus Punch, Leer and Revenge.

Debut VS. Makuhita
Brawly's Hariyama
Makuhita → Hariyama
Main article: Brawly's Hariyama

Hariyama first appeared as a Makuhita in VS. Crawdaunt II where it was seen surfing with its Trainer. Brawly used it in his Gym battle against Sapphire and it fought her Rono and managed to defeat it in battle. It then fought her newly evolved Combusken, Toro and despite evolving into a Hariyama and utilizing the Jū fighting style, it was eventually defeated. Brawly later used it in his battle against Mack and managed to defeat him and his illusions with raw power acquired from Bruno.

Debut VS. Crawdaunt II

In the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga

Brawly appears in The Haunted Gym where he tests his challengers by going through the Dark Gym.

Pokémon

Sableye
Sableye is Brawly's only known Pokémon. It is considered an unusual choice for him as it was not a Fighting-type Pokémon and it is immune to Fighting moves. Brawly probably uses it for his haunted Gym theme.
