History

As a Treecko

Treecko was caught in the episode Tree's a Crowd! after Ash helped him in trying to save his old tree home; this event was followed by a battle with Ash's Pikachu, and Ash caught him as a result of that battle. Ash has used Treecko in a number of battles since its capture including the gym battles against Roxanne and Brawly.

Treecko evolved into Grovyle in the episode Exploud and Clear in the middle of a battle against Guy's Loudred. Ash has used Grovyle in almost every gym battle since its evolution. The most notable being the one against Norman in Balance of Power, where it battled Norman's Slaking. It was also used in the Ever Grande Conference as well as the battle against the Frontier Brain, Greta.

As a Grovyle

It evolved into Sceptile in Odd Pokémon Out when its love, Nurse Joy's Meganium, was attacked by Team Rocket. Until Cutting The Ties That Bind, Sceptile lost his ability to use attacks due to a broken heart. He regained his ability to use attacks in the above-mentioned episode to save Ash from Team Rocket, with the use of Leaf Blade. It then used Quick Attack to save him and Bullet Seed to soften the fall. It was used in Ash's battle against Spenser in the following episode, Ka Boom With A View, where it won Ash the Spirit Symbol after learning a new move, SolarBeam.

Sceptile has since become one of Ash's most powerful Pokémon, even strong enough to hold its own in battle against certain legendary Pokémon. It is exceptionally fast and a good jumper. Sceptile also has a habit of keeping a twig in his mouth. He is also a bit of a loner, and can often be seen sitting alone on the branch of a tree, resting or looking at the sky. Both of these habits were carried over from when Sceptile was a Treecko. Despite this, Sceptile is a competitive battler, almost never turning down a fight. Sceptile was one of the five Pokémon that Ash took with him on his journey to the Battle Frontier.

In Once More With Reeling it fought in the Terracotta Contest final against May's Blaziken. The battle resulted in a tie where both May and Ash won the medal. This is the most recent battle Sceptile has fought under Ash's command.

Ash left Sceptile at Professor Oak's lab before setting off to Sinnoh.

Trivia

  • Sceptile keeping a twig in his mouth is much like a 番長 banchō, a juvenile gang leader, a character type that was common in manga and anime in the sixties and early seventies.
  • Sceptile is the only one of Ash's fully evolved Grass-type starter Pokémon that can't learn Razor Leaf.
  • Sceptile has learned a new Grass-type move in each of its evolutions: Bullet Seed as Treecko, Leaf Blade as Grovyle, and SolarBeam as Sceptile. All of these moves have been used recently.
  • In Odd Pokémon Out Ash referred to Sceptile as being male. He said, "...he won, and he lost..." It should be noted, however, that this was said in the dub only.
    • Also in Tree's A Crowd Ash said "That's weird, looks like he's not very good buddies with the other Treecko."
  • It took 59 episodes for Treecko to evolve into a Grovyle. Incidentally, the amount of episodes to evolve again was the reversed digits; 95.

Firsts for Ash

  • Treecko was the first of Ash's Pokémon not to know any moves of its type upon capture, excepting Caterpie who could not learn any Bug typed moves in the first generation.
  • Sceptile is Ash's first fully evolved Grass-type starter.

Traits shared with other Pokémon

  • Sceptile along with Ash's Charizard are the only of Ash's starters that reached their final stage of evolution.
  • Sceptile is the third of Ash's Pokémon to show interest in a Pokémon of a different species (a Meganium) The first was Totodile who has shown interest in an Azumarill and a Quagsire, and the second was Corphish who has shown interest in a Mawile.
  • May's Venusaur can be seen as a parallel to Sceptile, as both are the final form Grass-type starter Pokémon from their owner's Generation III co-star's home region.
  • Like May's Blaziken, Sceptile was voiced by Darren Dunstan in its second stage followed by Bill Rogers after the voice switch, and Bill Rogers in its final form.
