A sound-based move (Japanese: 音技 sound move or 音の技 sound move) is any move that uses sound. Sound-based moves have a variety of unique properties and effects. The mechanic was introduced in Generation III.

While not an inherent property of sound-based moves, from Generation VI onward, all sound-based moves (except Howl) can hit Pokémon behind a substitute.
