Grass Whistle (Japanese: くさぶえ Grass Flute), formatted as GrassWhistle prior to Pokémon X and Y, is a non-damaging Grass-type move introduced in Generation III. Prior to Generation IV, it was the signature move of Roselia, but other Pokémon could still inherit it via breeding.

Effect

Grass Whistle puts the target to sleep.

Grass Whistle is a sound-based move.

Pokémon with Insomnia, Vital Spirit, Shields Down (with the shield active), or Comatose as their Ability are immune to sleep. Pokémon with Soundproof (due to being a sound-based move) or Sap Sipper (due to being a Grass-type move) are also immune to Grass Whistle.

If powered up by a Grassium Z into Z-Grass Whistle, the user's Speed stat rises one stage. Throat Chop cannot prevent a Pokémon from using Z-Grass Whistle.

Grass Whistle can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Dream Eater, Hex, Nightmare, and Wake-Up Slap) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

Generation III-V

Grass Whistle cannot affect a Pokémon behind a substitute.

Generation VI onwards

Grass Whistle can now hit Pokémon even if they are behind a substitute.

Generation VIII onwards

Grass Whistle cannot be selected in a battle.
