Grass Whistle (Japanese: くさぶえ Grass Flute), formatted as GrassWhistle prior to Pokémon X and Y, is a non-damaging Grass-type move introduced in Generation III. Prior to Generation IV, it was the signature move of Roselia.

Effect

Generations III to VII

Grass Whistle puts the target to sleep. Pokémon with Insomnia, Vital Spirit, Sap Sipper, Soundproof or Comatose as their Ability are unaffected by Grass Whistle. Pokémon with Shields Down are unaffected only when the shield is active.

Grass Whistle will become a Water-type move when used by a Pokémon with the Ability Liquid Voice. If the user is affected by Throat Chop, it will be unable to use this move for two turns.

If powered up by a Grassium Z into Z-Grass Whistle, the user's Speed stat rises one stage, and the user can use this move regardless of whether it is affected by Throat Chop or not.

Grass Whistle can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Dream Eater, Hex, Nightmare, and Wake-Up Slap) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

Generation VIII onwards

Grass Whistle cannot be selected in a battle.

Trivia

  • In Generation VIII, it is the only one of Sing's variants that cannot be used in a battle.
  • Despite several of Nuzleaf's Pokédex entries stating that it uses the leaf on its head as a flute, Nuzleaf cannot learn this move.
  • Grass Whistle is the only Grass-type sound-based move.
