Ash's clothing

Ash Ketchum has worn a variety of outfits and clothing throughout his appearances in Pokémon the Series.

Main outfits

Pokémon the Series

All of Ash's main outfits are highlighted by a red hat. They often strongly feature the colors red and blue, along with black, white, green, and yellow. These are primary and bold colors, accenting Ash's primary status in the series. Additionally, this color scheme may be a reference to the first generation of games, Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. In most series, his outfit is based on the male protagonist of the region he's traveling in.

Original series

Ash's first outfit is, unlike those of many of his friends, a unique outfit design in its own right, though it is also directly inspired by Red's. This fact is also echoed by the outfits of Brock and Misty, which were designed purely for the animated series instead of using the outfits seen in the games themselves, and also the artwork for the games.

Ash's hat in this series is red with a white front panel that has a stylized green "L" on it. His other statement piece is a blue short-sleeved jacket with gold accents and white collar and sleeves worn open over a dark teal T-shirt, though the shirt is sometimes depicted as black. Ash kept his Kanto, Orange League, and Johto Badges pinned to the inside of the jacket, which from time to time, would be taken off by him, most notably when his Pokémon need warmth. The rest of his outfit consists of light blue cuffed jeans, a brown belt with a silver rectangular buckle that features a black triangle on the left side, green fingerless gloves with light green cuffs, black and white high-top sneakers with red dots on both sides, and a green backpack. The backpack has two pockets and two open compartments on each side. The main, bigger pocket is delimited by a black zip fastener, while the external pocket has an orange stripe on it.

The only part of the outfit with a known story behind it is the hat, which he won from a contest from the Pokémon League. Ash would turn his hat backwards when he was concentrating heavily, such as when he would face a Trainer or capture a Pokémon. This was very much the case early in his journey in Kanto, though by the time his journey in Johto ended, he hardly ever turned his cap.

Ash wore this outfit from Pokémon - I Choose You! to Gotta Catch Ya Later!. Ash has worn this outfit in the most episodes, wearing it during a total of 273.

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Ash's second outfit was the first alternate main outfit to be seen on any character, and by default, the least expected. Brock and Misty's second outfits would not debut until several episodes after Ash's did. This outfit was given to Ash as a gift by his mother in Gotta Catch Ya Later!.

Ash's new hat has a black stripe going up the back of it with a green half Poké Ball design. He also wore a bright blue sleeveless hoodie with a white hood, a white upside-down semicircle over the pocket, a small button closure similar to his old jacket, and a gold line circling the hem. In addition, he wears a black t-shirt with an scarlet stripe across the chest, black gloves instead of green (though the cuffs retain their light green coloration), light blue pants with a thin line circling each thigh paired with a black belt, and blue and black sneakers. His backpack in this series is green, with one pocket and a red Poké Ball design on it.

All of his new clothes, however, bear a notable resemblance to his old clothes, probably to maintain his style and avoid confusion which would be caused by a completely new appearance. This becomes a common theme among all new outfits: the new ones take on the style on the former outfits.

The symbol on his hat, backpack, and hoodie pocket reflect the Poké Ball symbols seen frequently in the Generation III games, particularly in the designs of the main characters' clothes. Ash's Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire outfit is similar to the one Red wears in Generation III, most notably, his sleeves.

Ash wore this outfit from Hoenn Alone! to When Pokémon Worlds Collide!. Ash has worn this outfit in more different series than any other, wearing it during three different series.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

For Ash's third outfit, the black portion of his hat is slightly wider and the logo is changed to light blue. He wears a black vest with a white collar and a curved yellow stripe along the chest, a white t-shirt, baggy light blue cargo pants, the same black and light green gloves from his precious outfit, and black and red sneakers. The backpack is similar to the one he wore in AG, being green with two pockets, and having a white Poké Ball design with a red "button".

As he is in Sinnoh, his outfit possessed some similarities to that of Lucas, the male player character from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The primary differences are the hat designs, sneakers, backpack color, and the fact that Ash wears fingerless gloves and no scarf. It also bears traits of Red's outfit from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, mainly the white collar and closed vest.

Pokémon the Series: Black & White

Ash's fourth outfit shows his hat with a white front panel, similar to his original hat, with a bright blue Poké Ball logo on it. He wears a bright blue and white short-sleeved hoodie with two black semicircles on the chest and a gold zipper, dark gray pants that are tucked into black and red high-top sneakers, and black fingerless gloves with red cuffs. This outfit bears similarities to the clothes worn by Hilbert from Pokémon Black and White. The backpack is blue-green, with one pocket, black straps, and a light green, curved stripe on it, resembling a Poké Ball design.

Ash wore this outfit from In The Shadow of Zekrom! to The Dream Continues!.

Pokémon the Series: XY

Ash's fifth outfit shows his hat with a white brim and a white semicircle separated from the base by a small rectangular portion, plus a blue short-sleeved jacket with white stripes along the sleeves, collar, sides, and opening over a black t-shirt with white sleeves and black cuffs, slate gray pants that are tucked into red and black high-top sneakers, and black fingerless gloves with red cuffs. This outfit possesses some similarities to the outfit worn by Calem from Pokémon X and Y. The backpack is one pocket, colored turquoise with black straps and a white, slanted Poké Ball design on it, similar to previous generations.

Ash's hat continues to sport the rounded Poké Ball design seen in previous generations, and most notably seems to be directly based on Red's Generation III hat; albeit modified to somewhat resemble characteristics of Calem's hat as well. In general, the outfit heavily borrows characteristics from Red and Calem.

Ash wore this outfit from The Dream Continues! to Till We Compete Again!. This is the second outfit that Ash has worn in more than one series, namely two.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Ash's sixth outfit is almost identical to the outfit worn by Elio in Pokémon Sun and Moon, with the coloring of the shirt being inverted and the hat being recolored from black to red with a white and blue brim, in keeping with the usual color scheme of Ash's headwear. This outfit deviates from Ash's previous styles in many ways; Ash no longer wears long pants, instead wearing ribbed dark gray capri shorts with a red border, he now wears only a T-shirt with no jacket or hoodie over the top, and he no longer wears gloves and socks. His shoes are blue and white with light blue soles. His backpack, shorts, and shoes are all identical to Elio's.

Ash wore this outfit from Alola to New Adventure! to Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!. In the same episode, Ash obtained a silver Z-Ring, which was eventually upgraded into a black Z-Power Ring in Revealing the Stuff of Legend!.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Ash's seventh outfit once again gives his hat a white brim, as well as a black stylized "C" with a green circle inside it. The rest of his outfit consists of consists of a bright blue vest with a yellow zipper, a white short sleeve t-shirt with a red stripe across the chest, indigo shorts with a black stripe down each side, and black sneakers with blue highlights. His backpack is green and black with one pocket and a C-shaped Poké Ball design similar to the one on his hat. This is the first outfit since the Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire outfit not to have any similarities with a male player character's outfit.

Ash started wearing this outfit in Enter Pikachu!.

In The Climb to Be the Very Best!, Ash received a Dynamax Band from Leon. Ash also left his Z-Power Ring at home, as revealed in Legend? Go! Friends? Go! until he retrieved it prior to Ultra Exciting from the Shocking Start!, but did wear his Z-Power Ring throughout his return to Alola in Helping the Hometown Hero!. In An Adventure of Mega Proportions!, Ash received a black Mega Glove with a red cuff from Korrina, which has a Key Stone in the middle. It resembles the gloves that he wore in Pokémon the Series: Black & White and Pokémon the Series: XY. Unlike his Z-Ring and Z-Power Ring in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Ash usually only wears these in battle. During his World Coronation Series Matches, Ash wears his Mega Glove on his left hand, his Z-Power Ring on his left wrist, and his Dynamax Band on his right wrist.

In The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!, Ash switches out his beat-up black and blue sneakers for red and black shoes with the green league logo on the outside given by his mom.

I Choose You! trilogy

This section deals with the main outfits worn by the alternate version of Ash who appeared in the twentieth, twenty-first, and twenty-third Pokémon movies.

I Choose You!

This outfit from I Choose You!, which retells parts of Ash's journey during the earliest episodes of the original series, is nearly identical to his original outfit, with certain parts of its design slightly altered. His hat now bears a logo similar to the one he has on his Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon hat, except it is colored green and a part of the upper section is missing, which gives it a similar appearance to the old logo.

His jacket was also given a few changes. It is a slightly darker blue, it now has pockets that are horizontal rather than diagonal, the white collar is slightly smaller, the gold trim on the bottom is now just a small stripe, and there is now just a single top button instead of the original two. His shirt is black instead of dark teal and it isn't tucked into his belt, making the belt not visible. His gloves are now teal green rather than just green. His black and white sneakers are less detailed and lack the red dots. The hat's original logo now appears on his backpack, which is two shades of green with one pocket.

Ash also wore this outfit during Distant Blue Sky!.

The Power of Us

In The Power of Us, Ash has another new outfit, this time unlike anything seen in the main series. Besides retaining the same hat that he wore in the previous movie, this outfit consists of a light blue and white jacket with a large red collar, which in turn has a single yellow line across the center and a similarly-colored trim at the bottom of said jacket. His jacket is kept open to reveal a black shirt, looser-fitting than his previous outfit. The bottom half has him sporting gray capri shorts with a thin white line coming down both sides, black fingerless gloves with a blue line across the cuff and a rectangular cutout on the back, and blue sneakers with yellow laces. His backpack is dark blue and black with a small Poké Ball design on it and one pocket.

Secrets of the Jungle

Ash gains another new outfit in Secrets of the Jungle, which closely resembles his outfit from Pokémon Journeys: The Series. His hat is the same as the rest of the trilogy, though with a slightly smaller logo, and the rest of his outfit consists of a blue down vest with a yellow zipper and sky blue lining, a white t-shirt with a Poké Ball graphic, dark gray shorts with yellow lines on the pockets and gray cuffs, the same gloves from The Power of Us, and white and blue sneakers with yellow and dark gray soles.

In Out of Their Elements!, Ash wore a dark-blue shirt and hat with a yellow bow in the middle and a blue jacket with yellow and red on it. He also wore light-blue pants, yellow boots with designs based on Pikachu and a piece of pink paint on one side of his face while performing at a circus.

Ash and Brock don party outfits in The March of the Exeggutor Squad. Ash wears a bright orange tuxedo with a frilled shirt and orange bowler hat.
Ash fantasizes about wearing a blue tuxedo for a movie premiere in Go West Young Meowth.
Ash wore a black suit and tie as part of Brock's fantasy in Hassle in the Castle.
In Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, the characters dress up in formal medieval-themed outfits. Ash wore an outfit based directly on that of Sir Aaron: a blue tunic over a gray long-sleeved shirt and gray pants, matched with blue gloves and boots and a black hat with a teal band and a hooded cape.
In the Wallace Cup, Ash wore a fedora hat and a tuxedo.
Ash wore a black suit with a yellow tie as part of Brock’s fantasy in Cream of the Croagunk Crop!.

Under all his outfits, Ash wears white boxer shorts, blue boxer shorts with dark-blue stripes, light-purple boxer shorts with thin vertical purple stripes, light-purple and purple-striped boxer shorts, or blue boxer shorts. He is seen wearing white boxer shorts in Abra and the Psychic Showdown; blue boxer shorts with dark-blue stripes in Holiday Hi-Jynx, light-purple boxer shorts with thin vertical purple stripes in Gone Corphishin' (although covered up by his top) and Minccino—Neat and Tidy!, light-purple and purple striped boxer shorts in A Fishing Connoisseur in a Fishy Competition!; and blue boxer shorts in Partner Promises! and Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!.
- A running gag in the dubs of the original series and Pokémon the Series: Black & White showed Ash's mother reminding him to change his underwear everyday, much to his embarrassment.
In The Tower of Terror, Ash wore a ghost mask.

In Pokémon Scent-sation!, Ash wore an orange and white dress with red Mary-Janes that he had to wear to get into Erika's Gym. The outfit was worn with a blonde wig with a large pink bow in it. When wearing this outfit, he went by the name "Ashley". The wig was destroyed when Pikachu electrocuted him, but it is unknown what happened to the dress and shoes afterwards. It is possible he still has them. This is the first of five times that he cross-dressed (albeit unwillingly).

In Pokémon 3: The Movie - Spell of the Unown: Entei and Strategy Begins At Home!, a picture and a flashback of Ash when he was younger shows him wearing a yellow shirt with a red stripe and blue shorts.
In Gonna Rule the School!, Ash wore an open green shirt with buttons around it, and a white shirt with buildings on it. He also wore a pair of glasses with palm tree leafs on both sides, golden building earnings, a white top piece hat, and a palm tree and building on his face while holding a flag on one hand.
In Love at First Flight, Ash wore Juliet's outfit and a wig that looks exactly like her hair to help Romeo talk to her.
In Lights, Camerupt, Action!, Ash when he was younger wore a green shirt with a yellow stripe in the middle and gray pants.
In The Electrike Company!, Ash wore a black jacket with a bullseye on the back of it.
Ash and Pikachu wore Hawaiian-styled clothing in Battling the Generation Gap!.

In Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, Ash wore a brown and white shirt with a light brown outline on both sides, turquoise tie in the middle and a Poké Ball pin on one side, and dark gray pants. He also wore a brown hat with a Poké Ball design on one side, and dark brown fingerless gloves and boots. Also, Ash wore a gray defense outfit that Clemont made for him.
In Alola to New Adventure!, a flashback of Mimey winning a trip to the Alola region via lottery shows Ash wearing a green T-shirt with a print design of this game sprite and blue shorts. He wore these clothes again in A Shocking Grocery Run!.
During the Poké Problem extra scene in Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!, Ash is seen wearing a green T-shirt with a print design of this game sprite on it and blue shorts.
In Drawn with the Wind! and Aiming for the Top Floor!, Ash wore a dark blue shirt and shoes with a pair of light-blue capris, and a cape that resembles a Rowlet.
In Enter Pikachu! and Heroes Unite!, Ash when he was at the age of six wore a light blue shirt with a dark blue underline and a picture of two phases of the moon. He also wore dark blue shorts.
In The Tale of You and Glimwood Tangle!, Ash wore a pink T-shirt and sweatshirt with his regular clothes.

Sleepwear

In Pokémon - I Choose You!, when he went to Professor Oak's Laboratory, Ash wore green and yellow pajamas. He also wore it at the beginning of Showdown at the Po-ké Corral, when Mr. Mime used a vacuum in front of his face. He also wears it in Legend? Go! Friends? Go! and The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!.
- He also wears extremely similar pajamas near the end of The Dream Continues!; however, these ones are a much lighter shade of green and have a green button instead of a yellow one.
- In Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl and Pokémon the Series: Black & White, Ash is seen wearing a white or light-blue undershirt and blue or dark-cyan shorts with white lines at the bottom as pajamas. In Pokémon the Series: XY, Ash dropped this in favor of a white and red sleeveless undershirt and blue shorts. He wears similar-looking pajamas in The Power of Us.
- In Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon and Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Ash wears T-shirts that comes in various colors and print designs on the front, along with beige shorts as pajamas:
  - In Young Kiawe Had a Farm!, Ash wears a muted green T-shirt.

He actually wore the Pikachu head print shirt in Currying Favor and Flavor!.
  - In A Glaring Rivalry!, Night of a Thousand Poses!, and Filling the Light with Darkness!, Ash wore a beige T-shirt with a print design of Rowlet's face on the front.
  - In Rising from the Ruins!, Ash wore a white T-shirt with a print design of an exclamation mark in the shape of a Pikachu's tail.
  - In A Dream Encounter!, and in the second ending of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Twerp, Twerpette, Ash wore an orange T-shirt with a print design of a green palm tree next to the top half of a sun.

  - In A Chilling Curse!, Ash wore a pale yellow T-shirt with a print design of Charmander's head and tail complete with its flame on it.
  - In Caring for a Mystery!, Ash wore a blue T-shirt with a print design of a Poké Ball with two yellow stars.

Whenever Ash and Goh (and sometimes Chloe) sleep in at a Pokémon Center in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, they wear a set of cream-colored pajamas with brown buttons and a brown stripe in a Poké Ball fashion on the front pocket, first seen in Restore and Renew!. He wore them again in Under Color of Darkness!, Nightfall? Nightmares!, Battle Three With Bea!, and Meeting Up with the Monarch!.

Sportswear

Ash sometimes wore a white and orange shirt with blue shorts. He wore it in The Pi-Kahuna and All Fired Up!.
Ash wore a tennis outfit in Pokémon Double Trouble consisting of a white collared shirt and blue shorts.
In Pulling Out the Pokémon Base Pepper! and Showering the World with Love!, Ash wore a baseball uniform when he played Pokémon Base with his classmates.
In Smashing with Sketch!, Ash wore a blue ping-pong uniform when he played Pokémon Ping-Pong with his classmates.

Ash wore a Team Rocket uniform in Ditto's Mysterious Mansion.
Ash wore a doctors lab coat while helping out at the clinic in A Chansey Operation.
In The Purr-fect Hero, Ash fantasizes about wearing a karate gi, and a gyōji uniform.
Ash wore army attire in Tanks a Lot! and Plant It Now... Diglett Later.
In Ariados, Amigos, Ash wore a red ninja uniform.
Ash wore a blue-and-black-colored ninja clothing in From Cradle to Save!. Interestingly, he did not wear a white headband like most of the other characters, presumably because of his hat.
Ash's Ultra Guardian uniform is blue with a light blue line around the chest area.
In Real Life...Inquire Within!, Ash wore a nurse outfit similar to the one that the Nurse Joy of Melemele Island wears. At first, he wore the female uniform, but later, he changed to a male uniform.
In Sleuths for Truth!, Ash, along with Goh, wore a male police officer uniform similar to the one that the Officer Jenny of Vermilion City wears.
In Nightfall? Nightmares!, Ash, along with Goh, had a dream where he wore the same Team Rocket uniform James wears, but the red "R" on the front in the English dub is an "S" in the Japanese version.

In Charmander – The Stray Pokémon and a flashback scene in The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!, Ash wore a green raincoat.
In Adventures in Running Errands!, Ash wore a green raincoat with a light green stripe in the middle.

Snow wear

Ash wore a red jacket and olive pants in Freeze Frame and Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snorunt!.
Ash wore a jacket similar to Lucas's Platinum jacket from Battling a Cute Drama! to Pillars of Friendship!. He was also seen wearing it during the credits of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
In the freezer room in Coming Back into the Cold!, Ash, along with Clemont, Serena, Alexa, and Bonnie, he wore an orange snowsuit.
In Over the Mountain of Snow!, Ash wore a blue snow jacket with mittens, an orange scarf, and red boots.
In A Full-Strength Battle Surprise! to A Real Icebreaker!, Ash was sometimes seen wearing a blue coat with a light-blue cross shape across the front and blue boots with a light blue line along the top of them.
In Getting a Jump on the Competition! and the third ending of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Notebook of the Heart, Ash wore red gloves, a blue jacket with a yellow stripe down the middle and a smaller and thinner stripe on the left side of his chest, with darker blue pants, and blue boots that are lighter than his boots and darker than his jacket with the yellow stripe around the top the boots.
In The Sinnoh Iceberg Race!, A Snow Day for Searching!, Memories of a Warming Kindness!, and Bearing Down Easy!, Ash wore a blue jacket based on his vest, with yellow outlines on the opening of his pockets and on the of the left and right sides. He also wore it in The Homecoming Crown! and the fourth version of the Japanese opening to Pokémon Journeys: The Series, One, Two, Three along with indigo snow pants with black stripes on the sides, blue and yellow snow boots, red snow gloves, and off-white winter earmuffs.
In Leaping Toward the Dream!, Ash wore orange exploration gear that are very similar to the ones in The Crown Tundra expansion in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Swimwear

In the original series, Ash's most common swimwear is a pair of teal trunks with yellow stripes running down the sides. He also wore those same swim trunks in the end credits of Jirachi: Wish Maker.
In Pallet Party Panic, Ash wore a blue with white stripes on the sides swim trunks in a fantasy.
Ash wore blue trunks with palm trees and coconuts in Pokémon Double Trouble.
Ash wore a blue wetsuit and scuba gear in Mantine Overboard! and The Mystery is History.
In Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias, Ash wears a pair of light blue swim trunks with white stripes.
Ash changed to a different swimsuit along with his main clothing in Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, in which he wore orange trunks with a green and yellow double stripe going down the left side. The same pattern was on the right as well, but appeared only on the waistband and was much smaller. This swimsuit actually appeared once before, in The Pi-Kahuna, but it didn't appear frequently until Ash's adventures in Hoenn.
In Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, Ash wears red trunks with light blue lines at the bottom and dark blue upside-down v-patterns on the sides. Like his Advanced Generation swimsuit, Ash had worn this one before in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, but it didn't make frequent appearances until his adventures in Sinnoh.
Ash wore trunks that were two shades of blue (dark on top and lighter on the bottom) with white stripes down the sides in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.
He also wore red trunks with large white Poké Ball prints on the sides in Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
In Pokémon the Series: Black & White, Ash wears purple trunks with red lines near the legs and yellow lines on the side.
Another pair of trunks appears in the fourth ending of Pokémon the Series: Black & White, Look Look☆Here. The swim trunks are red, with a dark blue stripe at both sides of the trunks. In the animated series itself, Ash wore it for the first time in Expedition to Onix Island!.
During Peace Smile!, the second ending of Pokémon the Series: XY, Ash wears blue swim trunks with an orange waistband.
In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Ash wears a pair of light blue swim trunks with white spots. In the animated series, he wore this swimsuit in A Diamond in the Rough!.
In Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon and Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Ash wears black swim trunks with a white stripe running down both sides.
In Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! and Distant Blue Sky!, Ash in an alternate community wore a blue, red and yellow pair of swim trunks.
In On Land, In the Sea, and to the Future!, when he, Goh and Chloe competed in the Marine Athletic Race, Ash wears a blue and teal wetsuit with a small grey Poké Ball print and zip-up pocket pouches on the side along with blue goggles.
In Absol Absolved!, Ash wears a pair of blue swim trunks with a white stripe running down both sides.
In Looking Out for Number Two!, Ash wore a dark and light blue scuba gear.
