Professor Kukui and Rotom Dex are big fans of the TV show Alolan Detective Laki, and Rotom even has a blond wig so it can pretend to be the star. When Ash’s Electrium Z goes missing, Rotom excitedly takes the case!
Through video replay, Rotom tracks the Z-Crystal’s last known whereabouts to the schoolyard, where Ash and Kiawe were training. Rotom suspects Kiawe ended up with the crystal, but Lillie has another explanation: the video shows Ash putting it in his pocket. One night, Professor Kukui, Rotom and Ash along with Pikachu, Rockruff and Rowlet are watching a TV program called Alolan Detective Laki featuring Laki where Laki is about to reveal the culprit of the case where he reveals the culprit made Mr. Makani hide his treasure which is the Princess Tear which surprises Mrs. Makani. Laki informs her that her husband was coerced without realizing and afterwards just disappeared as instructed. One of the characters asks him who the culprit is. Rotom, wearing a wig similar to Laki's hear has his own thoughts on who the suspect is and guesses it was the person who asked who the culprit was. Professor Kukui disagrees believing that it was actually the wife who did it which Rotom says is a bold guess as Professor Kukui guesses that Rotom is also hooked on Laki. Ash asks what is with the wig and Rotom replies that it is a part of his Laki dress-up kit which Professor Kukui bought for him along with several different detective tools. On TV, Laki reveals the culprit is the only person who knows where the Princess Tear is hidden but doesn't know he knows as well and reveals that the culprit is in fact the Doctor. Everyone is surprised including Rotom and Professor Kukui. The Doctor finds this nonsense and demands to see proof which Laki obliges and picks up a Sableye doll and instructs his partner Smeargle to bring him the Doctor's case which Smeargle obliges and pulls out a similar Sableye doll. Laki reveals that the Doctor has prepares this Sableye doll to replace the other in secret and opens the doll to reveal the Princess Tear which was kept hidden as the Doctor gives up as Laki returns the Princess Tear to Mrs. Makani who is grateful but knows it will never bring her husband back. Laki informs the Doctor that he may have deceived everyone but he can't deceive Alola's greatest detective.
Professor Kukui and Rotom state that Laki is so cool as Rotom goes to tell Ash about it, Rotom notices that Ash has fallen asleep on the couch. Professor Kukui wakes him up saying if he sleeps sitting up, he'll be sore the next day. Ash gets up and goes to his bed whilst his Pokémon sleep, Rotom tries to tell him who the culprit was but a tired Ash tells him to tell him tomorrow before pointing out that Rotom is still wearing the wig. Rotom takes the wig off, putting it on the desk and goes to reveal who the culprit was only to find Ash is fast asleep and goes over to the window and imitates Laki's phrases by saying the culprit was his reflection. The next morning at school, Ash is panicking as he can't find his Electrium Z as he looks in his backpack, under his desk and chair. Mallow asks what is wrong and offers to help as Ash explains what the problem is as his Normalium Z is still here. Lillie checks that his Electrium Z is the Z-Crystal that he had gotten from Tapu Koko. Ash confirms it and says that is super special as he got it from Tapu Koko and worries that Tapu Koko is going to be so mad and Sophocles mentions that Kiawe will be as well as Ash imagines Kiawe finding out and is furious and imagines Kiawe ordering Turtonator to use Inferno Overdrive on him. Sophocles suggests he gives up while he can which Mallow, Lana and Lillie agree but Rotom tells them to leave it to him as wearing his Laki wig, introduces himself as Alolan Detective Rotom promising to get Ash's Electrium Z back. Pikachu tries to touch Rotom's wig but Rotom stops him as Ash says he is counting on Rotom as Kiawe arrives at school causing the others to panic as Kiawe wonders if he missed something. Lana whispers to Rotom to hurry as Ash has Pikachu go to help Rotom.
Moving around the school, Rotom calls Pikachu his assistant as gather information is basic detective work as they go into the staff room and inform Professor Kukui of what has happened. Rotom says it could have happened at home or at school so they need to review. Professor Kukui remembers that yesterday during his lunch break, he spotted Ash and Kiawe working on their Z-Moves though as Ash was practicing with Rowlet, so he must have been using his Normalium Z and thinks it possible that Ash dropped his Electrium Z in the schoolyard when he was practicing. Rotom becomes excited and goes to search for it. Standing above the school by the bell, Rotom looks through binoculars over the schoolyard but notices it is too big to find something small so asks Komala if it had seen Ash's Electrium Z but Komala remains asleep as Pikachu begins to tug at Rotom's wig which makes him look back at the schoolyard before returning to Komala remembering that Komala is always asleep as Pikachu makes Rotom turn around again before going back to Komala but another tug of the wig with nothing makes Rotom angry at Pikachu. Using a magnifying glass, Rotom examines the ground around the schoolyard as Pikachu detects something in the ground and starts to dig only for an Alolan Diglett to pop up out of the ground.
In the principal's office, Samson Oak is looking at a picture of him on the board when Rotom enters, asking what those pictures are off. Samson Oak explains that a cameraman from Alola TV came by yesterday and took them with plans to use them for next year's Pokémon Pancake Race poster. Rotom examines the pictures and finds them excellent featuring Samson Oak and Komala and makes a pun regarding Vulpix to which Vulpix responds with its name causing Samson Oak to thank it for the encouragement and explains to Rotom that he has been training Vulpix to respond when it hears its name as a Pokémon pun but Rotom doesn't find it funny. Samson Oak mentions that the cameraman thought it was so funny that he shot a video by himself. Rotom asks if Samson Oak was the only video subject to which Samson Oak replies that the cameraman recorded many events around the school and was impressed to see Ash and Kiawe practicing, polishing the Z-Moves which gives Rotom an idea and leaves with Pikachu to go to the TV station, having decided that if they watch the video the cameraman shot, they'll see where the Electrium Z is. Back in class, Professor Kukui informs the class that their next lesson will be dealing with Pokémon moves and to meet up in the schoolyard. They all head out but Lana is going to work with Popplio on its balloons. As Ash goes outside, Kiawe asks where Pikachu is which causes everyone to get worried as Ash makes up an excuse about Pikachu having other stuff to do. Kiawe is disappointed as he was hoping to practice being hit by Gigavolt Havoc. Ash apologizes saying he wanted to train with Rockruff today as the others back up Ash's story though Sophocles nearly gives the game away by mentioning not needing the Electrium Z. Kiawe becomes suspicious and wonders what is going on with them. Rotom and Pikachu arrive at the TV station where a security guard stands outside as an employee leaves, Rotom goes inside whilst the security guard was distracted but spots Pikachu from going in and finds Pikachu adorable as Pikachu goes in, the security guard wonders where Pikachu's trainer is and tells Pikachu he can't go in without its trainer.
Unaware that Pikachu isn't following, Rotom is explaining the situation before noticing that Pikachu isn't with him. Rotom panics briefly before deciding that finding the video the most important job at present. Rotom finds a cleaning lady mopping the floor and speaks to her. She notices his wig and guesses that he is also a Laki fan and Rotom mentions he is looking for a video shot at the Pokémon School. The cleaning lady realizes what he is on about and points towards a nearby cameraman explaining he shot the footage. Rotom goes over to the cameraman and asks to see the video he recorded as it can provide a clue to solve a mystery. The cameraman has no idea what Rotom is on about but explains the footage hasn't be edited but is in a hurry to get to his next assignment but Rotom promises to be quick as he only needs to interface with his camera for a small period of time. The cameraman allows him to as long as its quick as Rotom applies its hand to the camera and employs the Pokédex function for the first time and downloads a copy of the video.
Back at school, Professor Kukui, Lillie, Mallow, Sophocles and Lana watch as Popplio creates a big balloon. Lana asks Lillie if she can try putting Snowy in the balloon and Snowy is happy to so Popplio creates another balloon for Snowy who floats into the air inside the balloon before being bounced on Popplio's nose. Nearby Ash has Rockruff sniff his Z-Ring to try and get the scent of his Electrium Z, Kiawe notices what Ash is doing as Ash tries to get Rockruff to find his Electrium Z, Rockruff begins sniffing the ground, trying to find the scent when Kiawe decides to ask what Ash is doing as it doesn't look like he is training with Rockruff, Ash hurriedly comes up with the excuse that they are working on Odor Sleuth as Kiawe suspiciously asks when Rockruff learned Odor Sleuth, Lillie quickly says that Rockruff was helping her out with Snowy's training which Ash agrees as Lillie gets Snowy to try and act like Rockruff but Kiawe isn't convinced making Sophocles, Mallow and Lana worried when Rotom and Pikachu arrive back, Ash quickly asks them if they found out anything about his lost Electrium Z, Kiawe becomes furious to learn, Rotom tells Ash he has solved the mystery, Ash realizes that Kiawe is furious and Kiawe starts chasing Ash around the schoolyard, Kiawe orders Turtonator to use Inferno Overdrive but Rotom stops them and tells Kiawe not to be angry until he hears his theory to which Kiawe says fine as Rotom has Pikachu gather everyone in the classroom.
In the classroom, Rotom acts like Laki and announces he has solved the mystery as Ash asks Rotom to stop keeping them in the dark and show him with the Electrium Z is, Rotom replies saying he can't as the Electrium Z is still in the culprit's possession. Professor Kukui tells Rotom he is taking the whole Alolan Detective thing a bit too far but Rotom calls for quiet as he reveals the extent of his skills and reveals the culprit to be Kiawe which shocks everyone as Kiawe proclaims his innocence as Rotom plays his video, fast forwarding to where Kiawe and Ash shake hands with Ash thanking Kiawe for working with him as Rotom explains that this was the very moment that Ash gave Kiawe the Electrium Z. Kiawe is shocked by this as Rotom says this is the only theory he came up with as Kiawe says that this is without merit as if there was a crystal in his hand, it would have been noticed and Ash says he didn't feel it. Rotom is still convinced Kiawe is the culprit and says he hasn't met a case he couldn't solve. Kiawe angrily shouts that it makes no sense as Lillie asks Rotom to play back the footage to where before they began training with Rotom does. The footage shows Lana and Popplio with a balloon but Lillie asks Rotom to remind a bit more where in the corner of the footage, Ash and Kiawe are seen with Ash putting something into his pocket. Ash remembers that he puts his Electrium Z in his pocket after training and switched it with his Normalium Z. Rotom is left confused as Ash explains he had forgotten and took it out just as he was going to bed and placed it on the drawers but as he was going to bed, Rotom showed up as Rotom realizes the Electrium Z must be in his room, Ash apologizes as Pikachu pokes Rotom's wig, Rotom falls onto the desks, Pikachu pulls out the missing Electrium Z from the wig, everyone is shocked but Ash is pleased to have it back, Rotom realizes that when he put his wig on the desk, the Electrium Z got caught in his wig which now makes Kiawe furious at Rotom causing Kiawe to chase after Rotom as Sophocles notes that Rotom is on borrowed time.
Later at Professor Kukui's house, Rotom is showing Kiawe, Ash and Professor Kukui video footage of Kiawe using a Z-Move, having edited it just for him. Ash finds it cool as Rotom says that if they ever want to record training, Rotom is capable of doing it.
