Trivia

Origin

It is, obviously, based on a seahorse. Though its ability to shoot ink mimics that of a squid. Horsea and its evolutions share the same species name with Dratini and its evolutions and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.

Name origin

Horsea's name is based on seahorse and the diminutive word horsie. Its Japanese name is a misspelling of 竜 tatsu, dragon, which is part of the common name of a seahorse in Japanese, 竜の落し子 tatsu-no-otoshigo, lit. illegitimate child of a dragon.

In other languages

  • German: Seeper
  • French: Hypotrempe - A play on the word hippocampe, which means seahorse. Trempé means soaked.
  • Korean: 쏘드라 Ssodeura
