Cleffa (Japanese: ピィ Py) is a Template:Type2 baby Pokémon.

It evolves into Clefairy via happiness, who evolves into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Cleffa are very small pink creatures that are vaguely star-shaped in appearance. They basically look like a chibi Clefairy with their pink bodies and brown ears. They also have a curl on their forehead and a small tail, however, they do not have the small wings that their evolutions have.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Cleffa, like its evolutions, are known to benefit in some way by dancing in the moonlight. Cleffa can also gain nutrients by drinking dew water. Cleffa and its evolutions are the only known Pokémon to possess the Magic Guard ability, which grants them immunity from in-direct damage.

Behavior

Cleffa have been known to be attracted by meteor showers. Sightings of this Pokémon always increases during meteor showers, and when they do show up, they dance the night away.

Habitat

As with their evolved forms, Cleffa live in mountainous regions; especially on Mt. Moon.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

In Volume 9, Cleffa is one of the baby Pokémon that escape from the Daycare Center near Goldenrod City.

Whitney has a Cleffa as seen in Volume 12. It provided an opening for her Miltank to use a Rollout on what she thought was Suicune, but the fake Pokémon withstood the attack and struck Miltank down.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Cleffa only appears as a random trophy.

Trophy information

With silhouettes that resemble stars, Cleffa are often sighted when the night sky is filled with shooting stars. Cleffa evolves into Clefairy, but only if it has a strong bond of friendship with its trainer. Since Cleffa are so cute and loveable, many trainers choose to keep it in this unevolved form.

Trivia

  • Cleffa shares the same species name with Staryu. They are both known as Star Shape Pokémon.

Origin

It is possible that it's based on fairies and pixies, just like its evolutions.

Name origin

Cleffa's name is a contraction of the name Clefairy, to indicate it is a pre-evolution. Clef is French for keys (ie. musical ones). Its Japanese name is also a contraction of the name Pippi.

In other languages

  • German: Pii - Shorter form of its evolution's name "Piepi".
  • French: Melo - A contraction of the word melody.
  • Korean: 삐 Ppi
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 皮寶寶 Pí Băo Băo - The first character is a transliteration of its Japanese name. "寶寶" means darling or baby.
