The Mew Move Tutor (Japanese: バトル山の人) is a special NPC that appears in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. His sole purpose is to teach moves to Mew by asking the player several questions in order to determine a set of available 4 moves.

Overview

The Move Tutor appears at Mt. Battle if the player has a Mew in their party. Since Mew does not natively appear in XD: Gale of Darkness, it must be transferred in via Game Link Cable from a different Generation III game.

Speaking to the NPC and answering his questions is free. Accepting the proposed moveset costs 5000 Poké Coupons.

The NPC asks a total of 5 questions, and each response the player chooses affects a set of hidden score values. At the end of the sequence, the NPC then proposes a set of 4 moves based on these score values. If this move set is accepted, then the player's Mew will be taught the entire set, overwriting their currently-owned moves.

A pool of 100 moves are available through this tutor - this includes all moves that Mew could learn in Generation III from level up, TMs, HMs, and other Move Tutors, with an additional 6 moves exclusively available through this tutor. However, due to how the move set algorithm works, it is only possible to have one move from the exclusive set at a time.

Move Type

Fake Out  Normal

Questions

When a question is asked, only 2 of the possible responses are offered to the player, even if the question has 3 or more possible responses.

Each response chosen adjusts three values: attack, strategy, and risk. All three values start at 0.

If a response has a range instead of a single number (example: "-1 to 3"), then that response chooses a random integer within that range (example: -1, 0, 1, 2, or 3), with all integers having an equal chance to be selected.

Question 1

Question: "What are Pokémon to you?"

Response Attack Strategy Risk
Collectibles - +1 to +3 -
Friends - +1 -
Treasures - -3 to -1 -

Question 2

Response Attack Strategy Risk

All-out attack +1 to +3 - -

Choosing "A loss is a win" has two possible outcomes, each with a 50% chance to occur:

Outcome Attack Strategy Risk
Outcome A -2 - -
Outcome B - -1 to +3 -

Move set determination

At the end of the questionnaire, the NPC will select one of 6 categories based on the how the attack, strategy, and risk values compare to each other.

Subcategory

After choosing a category, the NPC will choose a subcategory.

  • If the category chosen was "Combo", then the subcategory chosen will depend on the attack, strategy, and risk values.
  • If any other category was chosen, the subcategories are instead chosen by random chance.

Within each subcategory is a set of templates for the 4-move set that the NPC will propose. The NPC will choose one of these templates at random.

Within each template, each move slot of the set has certain rules applied to it:

  • A fixed slot can only contain certain moves.
  • A flagged slot can only contain moves that have (or don't have) a certain flag.

The following flags are possible:

  • SPECIAL - special attacks.
  • PHYSICAL - physical attacks.
  • CONSISTENT - moves with 100% accuracy and no drawback.
  • PUNCH - punching moves.
  • NONE - moves with no flags.

Additionally, the following groups describe available moves:

  • INCONSISTENT - any move without the CONSISTENT flag (including moves with NONE).
  • OFFENSIVE - any move with the PHYSICAL or SPECIAL flags.
  • ANY - any move in the pool, regardless of flags.

Note that moves which are exclusive to this tutor can only appear in fixed slots.
